Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA tiny DOOM port can fail at four different boundaries: the source may not compile, the board may reject the firmware, the firmware may be missing its separate game-data file, or the display driver may be incompatible with the screen. The title alone does not identify the hardware, but the documented failures most closely match RP2040 projects for a Thumby-style display and Raspberry Pi Pico/RP2040 Zero boards.
First record the device label or revision, the port and release name, and whether the failure occurs during compilation, UF2 flashing, boot, or display output. Then use the matching branch below. Do not copy a data address or UF2 from a different board or release.

When the source build will not compile
Verify the target toolchain
The RP2040 target in Smallest-Doom uses CMake, the Pico SDK, current pico-extras, and the normal Pico SDK prerequisites, including arm-none-eabi-gcc. The project’s example configuration supplies PICO_BOARD, PICO_SDK_PATH, and PICO_EXTRAS_PATH. A wrong board value or a path pointing at a different SDK checkout can select the wrong target or fail before game code is compiled.
- Install CMake and an ARM cross-compiler, then confirm each is available from the shell used to configure the build.
- Check that
PICO_SDK_PATHpoints to the intended Pico SDK checkout and thatPICO_EXTRAS_PATHpoints to the matching pico-extras checkout. - Use the board identifier required by the release rather than guessing a generic Pico board name.
- Record the operating system, compiler version, SDK branch or revision, board, and the first meaningful error. Later diagnostics are often secondary failures.
The maintainer says the project was built against the Pico SDK develop branch and warns that compiler versions other than arm-none-eabi-gcc 9.2.1 can create binary-size problems. Treat that as project-specific, dated guidance rather than a rule for every current Pico project: if a newer compiler fails, reproduce the documented environment before changing source code.
Initialize USB support only when you need it
The USB-keyboard target uses the repository’s TinyUSB submodule. From the repository checkout, initialize submodules with:
git submodule update --init
If you are building a target without USB keyboard support, do not assume a missing TinyUSB checkout explains its error. Conversely, if the compiler reports missing TinyUSB headers while building the USB target, initialize the submodule and configure again.
Reconfigure from a clean directory
- Save the complete first CMake or compiler error and the exact configuration command you used.
- Confirm the SDK and extras paths and the intended
PICO_BOARDvalue. - Remove or rename the old build directory so stale cache entries cannot preserve a wrong board or path.
- Run the repository’s documented CMake example with your verified paths and board value.
- Inspect the first real configuration or compiler error before addressing follow-on messages.
Do not substitute a generic CMake recipe for a different DOOM port. Build systems that produce a native desktop executable are not interchangeable with the RP2040 cross-build.
Do not install SDL2 for the wrong target
The repository also documents native Chocolate Doom builds that use SDL2. That dependency belongs to the desktop build path. Installing SDL2 will not repair an RP2040 cross-build unless you deliberately selected the native target. If your goal is a UF2 for a Pico-class board, return to the Pico SDK, pico-extras, ARM compiler, and board configuration checks.
Read errors in dependency order
Configuration errors often cascade. A missing SDK path can produce missing headers, undefined board symbols, and linker failures in one run. Fix the earliest path or package error, delete the cache, and configure again before interpreting later messages. If the first error names a file that exists, check whether the shell is using a different SDK checkout than the one you inspected. Printing the resolved environment variables and compiler version in your build notes makes this mismatch visible.

When flashing fails after a successful build
Enter BOOTSEL deliberately
An RP2040 board normally appears as a USB mass-storage device only while its bootloader is active. Hold the board’s BOOTSEL control while connecting or resetting it, wait for the drive to appear, and copy the UF2 intended for that board and release. If no drive appears, the problem is at the USB, cable, power, bootloader, or hardware-identification layer rather than in the DOOM data file.
Confirm the artifact before copying it
- Read the release notes and filename, including suffixes for USB, SPI, display, or WAD variants.
- Do not rename a UF2 from another target to make it appear suitable.
- After the copy and automatic reboot, note whether the board disappears normally, reappears in BOOTSEL, or starts running firmware. Each behavior points to a different failure.
A successful file copy proves only that the bootloader accepted a UF2. It does not prove that the executable matches the board, that the game data is present, or that the display timing suits the screen.
If the drive vanishes during copying, wait for the board’s automatic reboot before reconnecting. Re-enter BOOTSEL only when the release instructions call for a second-stage file. Copying every UF2 in a release, or repeatedly interrupting the reset cycle, can leave you unsure which image is actually installed.
When the firmware flashes but DOOM does not start
Understand the executable/data split
For the documented RP2040 builds, the UF2 contains executable code and firmware data but not necessarily the converted DOOM WAD payload. The game data must be generated or obtained in the format expected by the selected binary and written at that binary’s target address. A board can therefore flash successfully and still show nothing because the data is missing, in the wrong format, or at the wrong location.

These addresses are tied to the named variants. Follow the exact installation instructions shipped with your release; never apply the address from one row to another firmware.
Choose WHX or WHD according to the hardware and data
Smallest-Doom describes WHX as a highly compressed “super-tiny” format for shareware DOOM1 data on a 2 MB Pico configuration. Larger Ultimate Doom or Doom II WADs need the less-compressed WHD format and more flash; the project documentation describes 8 MB as the larger-WAD configuration and says those WADs are too complex for WHX and will not fit in 2 MB. The project’s whd_gen documentation also says support for non-id WADs is not guaranteed.
Those limits are technical, not a statement that the port supplies commercial game data. Use data you are entitled to use, convert it using the release’s own tools and instructions, and keep the data format matched to the firmware variant.

Check the data conversion step, not just the output name
A file that ends in the expected extension is not necessarily valid. Verify that the converter completed without an error, that it read the intended IWAD or shareware data, and that the resulting file size is plausible for the selected format. Do not feed a WHD file to a WHX target or use a converted file generated for a different port. If the release gives a command or memory-writing procedure, copy it exactly and record the address alongside the UF2 filename so the two cannot be mixed later.

AncientJames, the named maintainer in the TinyCircuits discussion, wrote: “Doing nothing at all on boot would be a symptom of not finding the data file. (And of many other possible problems)” (forum thread). A silent boot therefore justifies checking the data file first, but it does not prove that data is the only fault.
Installing the documented Thumby-style release
An older Smallest-Doom release describes a specific sequence for an RP2040 Zero and Thumby-oriented display files. The release page is the authority for that package; its instructions should not be generalized to every Thumby revision.
- Put the RP2040 Zero into BOOTSEL mode and copy
thumby-doom.uf2. - Allow the board to reboot, then enter BOOTSEL mode again.
- Try the appropriate
doom_tiny_spi.....uf2file for the display’s internal specifications. - The release author reports
doom_tiny_spi62000000_fp6100_pl2.uf2working on the author’s setup, but that is not a universal guarantee. - If the display remains blank, the release instruction is to start the whole process again, including the BOOTSEL steps.
Use the release’s exact four-way display choice rather than selecting a file by a similar-looking filename. The release page is available at Smallest-Doom releases.
Diagnosing a blank, distorted, or desynchronized display
Separate display compatibility from data loading
A blank screen can mean missing data, an incompatible display driver, incorrect SPI wiring, a wrong screen revision, or a firmware crash before video initialization. Check in this order:
- Verify the firmware/data pairing and the target-specific data address.
- Use the display-specific UF2 supplied for the release.
- Confirm the exact screen or console revision and its internal display specifications.
- If the release provides a diagnostic, restore the device’s normal firmware and run that diagnostic before changing timing values.
- Only after those checks, experiment with timing or rebuild the display path.
Use the greyscale diagnostic when available
In the TinyCircuits report, the maintainer suggested restoring Thumby firmware and running the uGrey greyscale driver test with greytest.py to check display compatibility. That test can tell you whether the screen and driver communicate independently of DOOM. It is a compatibility check, not a replacement for installing the correct game data.
Treat timing reports as device-specific
One forum user reported visible desynchronization at one timing and a better result around 6100. That is a single-device observation, not a guaranteed setting for every screen revision. If a timing value improves one unit, record the exact hardware and release; do not present it as a universal fix or transplant it into an unrelated UF2.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Distortion that changes when you select another SPI or timing build points toward the display path, while a perfectly stable blank screen still leaves missing data as a possibility. Conversely, a brief logo followed by silence can indicate that early firmware is running before it fails to locate game data. These observations narrow the search, but none is a substitute for matching the documented binary and payload.
Compare the available firmware choices before choosing one
| Decision axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Board and display | Is the binary built for your RP2040 board, wiring, and screen revision? |
| USB keyboard | Do you need the USB variant, and did you initialize TinyUSB when compiling it? |
| Data format | Does the binary require WHX or WHD, and does your WAD fit that format and flash capacity? |
| Data address | What address does this exact firmware document: 0x10040000, 0x10042000, or 0x10048000? |
| Display timing | Which SPI, frame-rate, or timing variant is intended for the internal display? |
The project reports approximately 30–35+ FPS as a general frame-rate claim, plus about 2K of binary growth for USB support. These are project documentation figures, not independent benchmark results, and they do not override compatibility requirements.

For a 2 MB board, the WHX shareware path is the practical capacity choice. An 8 MB configuration opens the WHD path for larger WADs, but it still requires the matching firmware and conversion process. USB support is a feature choice, not a universal upgrade: it changes the target and can change the required data address.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to change while troubleshooting
- Do not alter several timing constants, board definitions, and memory addresses in one rebuild; you will not know which change helped.
- Do not erase a known-good firmware until you have saved its UF2 and the corresponding data instructions.
- Do not infer that a commercial WAD is included with a port simply because a binary boots.
- Do not treat one user’s timing value as a specification for every Thumby screen.
- Do not switch to a native SDL2 build when your actual goal is an RP2040 UF2.
A recovery checklist that avoids making the fault worse
- Write down the console model, revision, port release, and symptom stage.
- For a compile error, verify CMake,
arm-none-eabi-gcc, Pico SDK, pico-extras, board value, and any required submodule. - For a flash error, return to BOOTSEL and select the exact UF2 for the board and release.
- For a successful flash with no game, identify the required WHX or WHD file and exact load address from that binary’s instructions.
- For a blank or unstable image, try the intended display-specific UF2 and use the available greyscale or screen diagnostic.
- Change one variable at a time and keep the previous known-good firmware available for recovery.
If you need a tailored diagnosis, provide the complete first build error or the exact UF2 filename, console and screen revision, whether the board reaches BOOTSEL, and whether the failure is compilation, flashing, boot, or video. Without those details, a universal “black screen” fix would be guesswork.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the UF2 copy successfully if DOOM still shows a black screen?
UF2 acceptance only confirms that the RP2040 bootloader received the file. The executable may still need a separate WHX or WHD payload, and that payload must match the firmware format and memory address. A display-specific UF2 may also be required.
Which data address should I use?
Use the address documented for the exact binary. The documented Smallest-Doom examples are 0x10040000 for doom_tiny, 0x10042000 for doom_tiny_usb, and 0x10048000 for the doom_tiny_nost variants. Never borrow an address from another row.
Can I run Doom II or Ultimate Doom on the 2 MB build?
The project documentation says larger Ultimate Doom and Doom II WADs require WHD and more flash, with 8 MB described for the larger-WAD configuration. They are too complex for WHX and will not fit in the 2 MB setup.

Do I need SDL2 to compile the Pico version?
No. SDL2 belongs to the repository’s native Chocolate Doom build. The RP2040 path uses CMake, the Pico SDK, pico-extras, and the ARM cross-compiler. Install SDL2 only when you intentionally build the desktop target.
What does the USB variant change?
The USB target includes keyboard support through TinyUSB and has its own build target and data address. The project reports about 2K of additional binary growth. Initialize the TinyUSB submodule when compiling that target.
Why are there several doom_tiny_spi UF2 files?
They target different display timing or internal specifications. The release’s four-way choice is hardware-specific; selecting a similarly named file without checking the screen revision can produce a blank, distorted, or desynchronized image.
Is timing around 6100 a universal fix for Thumby displays?
No. A forum user reported better synchronization around 6100 on one device. That is an anecdotal, hardware-specific observation, not a guaranteed setting for every Thumby revision.
What information should I include when asking for help?
Include the console and screen revision, port and release name, exact UF2 filename, whether the board enters BOOTSEL, the complete first compiler error if building from source, the compiler and SDK versions, and whether the failure is compile, flash, boot, data loading, or video.
The Bottom Line
Fix the boundary that is actually failing. Use the release’s board and display variant, build the RP2040 target with its documented Pico SDK environment, pair each UF2 with the correct WHX or WHD payload and address, and treat timing reports as device-specific. A successful flash is only one checkpoint—not proof that the data, firmware, and screen are compatible.
