Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Start by noting the exact error code in GOG GALAXY, then follow the fix for that code: E8 points to insufficient free space, E4 to disk access, E5 to a game still running during an update, and E2 to a dependency-installation failure at the end of installation. If there is no code, work through the download checks below and distinguish a Galaxy download problem from an installer or update problem.
First, identify where the failure happens
A download that will not start or finish is a different problem from an installation or update that fails after the files have downloaded. The distinction matters: changing a download method may help with a corrupted download, but it will not resolve an account-ownership error or a disk-access problem. Before changing settings, write down the complete error label or code shown by Galaxy. GOG’s GOG GALAXY error-code list gives each code a separate meaning.

If you do not see a code, note which stage fails: does Galaxy fail to connect or begin downloading, does the download stop before it completes, or does installation or updating fail after the download? Also note whether the problem affects one game or more than one. These details help you choose the right branch without treating every failure as a network, antivirus, or storage problem.

Keep the message wording as well as the code. GOG labels include “Installation failed (E8)” and “Update failed (E2),” and the same game can have a different issue depending on whether Galaxy is downloading files, installing them, or applying an update. If a message gives no code, do not guess one based only on when the problem appeared. Instead, identify the failing stage and use the supported alternative download route or the relevant GOG Support guidance.

Match the Galaxy error code to its stated cause
| Code | GOG’s stated cause | First useful check |
|---|---|---|
| E1 | The local game copy is corrupted. | Try a supported alternative download route; if you use offline installers, download every required part. |
| E2 | Galaxy failed to finalize the update because of a dependency-installation failure at the end of installation. | Use the E2-specific dependency-folder procedure below, or install the affected game with its offline installer. |
| E3 | Connection to GOG.com servers failed. | Retry later or follow GOG’s current support guidance; the code alone does not establish that a particular network change will fix it. |
| E4 | A disk access error occurred during installation or update. | Check the configured game and temporary update folders, and whether your account can access them. |
| E5 | The game was running during an update. | Close the game before trying the update again. |
| E6 | No valid copy of the game is owned. | Check that you are signed in to the account that owns the game. |
| E7 | The game is no longer available. | Check the game’s availability and GOG’s guidance; downloading again does not address this stated cause. |
| E8 | Insufficient free disk space. | Check available space on the selected install and temporary update locations. |
| E9 | GOG.com servers returned an unknown error. | Retry later or consult GOG’s support guidance; the code does not identify a single local fix. |
GOG’s error-code page also lists E10–E15, but those codes concern library operations such as importing, adding or removing, linking, or uninstalling games rather than the basic download or installation failure addressed here. Do not apply one code’s explanation to another: E8 is a capacity issue, while E4 is an access issue; E2 is specifically a dependency-finalization problem.
This distinction prevents wasted troubleshooting. For example, freeing space is the direct check for E8, but it does not answer E4 if Galaxy cannot access its chosen folder. Re-downloading is not the stated solution for E6 or E7, because those errors concern ownership or availability. Likewise, the E2 folder recovery is not a general repair for E1, E3, or other errors. Start with the code, then use only the branch that matches it.
Check both storage locations for E4 or E8
E8 means the available capacity is insufficient. E4 means Galaxy encountered a disk access error. They can both involve storage, but they are not interchangeable: a drive can have free space and still be inaccessible to the current account, and a folder can be accessible while the drive lacks the space needed for the game or its update.
Review the install and temporary update folders
- In Galaxy, open Settings.
- Open Installing, updating.
- Review the Games installation folder and Temporary game update folder.
- Check available free space on the drives used by both locations, and confirm that your current account can access the selected folders.
- If appropriate, choose accessible folders on a drive with sufficient capacity. GOG explains how to change these locations in its instructions for changing game installation and download locations.
Do not rely on a universal free-space buffer: the space needed depends on the game and, for updates, the files involved. Check the game’s requirements and the capacity of the actual destination and temporary-update locations rather than assuming that the installation folder is the only relevant one.
Checking both paths is important because Galaxy has a separate temporary game update location as well as the main Games installation folder. A game may already be installed in one location while update files are handled in another. If either selected location is on a drive with inadequate capacity, an update can fail even when the other drive has room. The useful check is the location Galaxy is configured to use, not just the drive where you expect the game to be.
If the error is E4 rather than E8
Focus on access as well as capacity. Confirm that the configured folders still exist and that the account running Galaxy can use them. If a location is on a drive or folder you cannot access, changing Galaxy to an appropriate accessible location may address that condition. A disk-access code does not by itself prove that a drive is damaged, nor does adding storage necessarily fix an access problem.

When you change a location, make sure the new selection is appropriate for both the game installation or temporary update files, as applicable. Then retry the operation that failed and check whether the same code returns. If it does, retain the code and the folder information for a GOG Support request; do not treat E4 as proof of a specific hardware fault.

For E5, close the game before updating
GOG defines E5 as a case where the game was running during an update. Exit the game, then retry the update in Galaxy. This is a targeted check for E5; it is not a general remedy for download errors or other codes.
Make sure the game is no longer running before starting the update attempt again. If a different code appears after closing it, use that new code’s meaning rather than continuing to troubleshoot as though the failure were still E5. The error definition is specific to an update overlapping with a running game.
For E2, repair the dependency finalization
E2 is GOG’s “Installation failed (E2)” or “Update failed (E2)” failure to finalize the update. GOG’s specific explanation is that Galaxy failed to install game dependencies at the end of installation. Follow the folder procedure only when the error is E2; it is not a general-purpose fix for other codes.
- Exit Galaxy using the cogwheel menu.
- Open the Galaxy installation directory. GOG lists
C:Program Files (x86)GOG GALAXYas the default location. - Find the folder named
Dependencies-Tempand rename it toDependencies. - If Windows asks whether to merge with an existing folder, choose the merge option.
- Reopen Galaxy and check whether the installation or update problem remains.
These steps are GOG’s recovery procedure for E2, not permission to rename other folders or delete installation data. For the complete code-specific guidance, see GOG’s E2 dependency-finalization instructions.
Use an offline installer as the E2 alternative
GOG also suggests installing the affected game with its offline installer and waiting for it to appear in Galaxy’s Installed view. This provides another installation route if the Galaxy installation itself is the obstacle. Follow GOG’s instructions for downloading purchased items, and make sure you download all installer parts required for that game before running the setup application.

The offline-installer route does not change the diagnosis: E2 is still the dependency-finalization error Galaxy reported. It is an alternative way to install the affected game, not a reason to apply the dependency-folder procedure to unrelated failures. After setup, allow the game to appear in the Installed view as GOG’s guidance describes.
For a corrupted copy or incomplete download, try another official route
GOG recommends trying another download method when one fails. The two relevant official routes are Galaxy and the game’s offline backup installers. Which one to try depends on the failure: Galaxy is convenient when its download path works; offline installers are useful when Galaxy is the obstacle or you want the standalone setup files. GOG describes Galaxy as protecting files from download corruption. Do not assume a manual browser download has the same protection.
| Route | Useful when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| GOG GALAXY | You want Galaxy to download and install the game, or a browser download encounters GOG’s documented 403 scenario. | GOG describes Galaxy as offering pause and resume, automatic updates, and protection against download corruption. The sources do not establish that it is always faster or more reliable on every connection. |
| Browser offline backup installers | Galaxy is the obstacle, or you want standalone setup files that can be kept for later use. | Download all necessary installer parts, then run the setup application. Missing required files can prevent installation. GOG does not advise manual browser downloading for its checksum-corruption scenario because that route does not provide error protection. |
These options serve different needs rather than guaranteeing different outcomes. Galaxy offers an integrated download and install path, along with pause/resume, automatic updates, and GOG-described protection against download corruption. Offline backup installers are separate setup files that you can retain and use without Galaxy for installation. The official information does not establish that either method is universally faster or more reliable on every connection, so choose based on which path is failing and whether you need standalone files.

- Open your GOG account library and select the game you purchased.
- Choose the offline backup game installers and download every part the game requires. A partial set of installer files will not be enough to complete setup.
- After the required files finish downloading, run the setup application to install the game.
- If you used the offline installer as the E2 alternative, allow time for the installed game to appear in Galaxy’s Installed view.
GOG’s step-by-step page is How do I download my purchased items? For a download that fails, its download-issues guidance explains why missing installer files matter and why manual browser downloading is not recommended for the checksum-corruption case.
Do not stop after downloading only the first file if the game’s offline installer is split into multiple required parts. GOG’s download-issues guidance says missing installer files can prevent installation. Once all necessary files are present, run the setup application. If that route fails too, record whether the failure happened while downloading a part or while running setup, then include that distinction when contacting support.
If a browser download returns 403
GOG documents one specific cause for a browser-download 403: the user’s connection may use a different IP address when connecting to GOG’s site than when connecting to the file-hosting provider. For that documented case, GOG recommends trying Galaxy because it uses a different authentication method. This explanation is limited to the scenario GOG describes; a 403 response does not prove that every failure has the same cause.

If the browser route is the one failing, try Galaxy rather than repeatedly restarting the same browser download. If Galaxy also fails, use the error code it displays to select the relevant branch above, or consult GOG Support for the current guidance.
This is a narrow recommendation for GOG’s documented 403 scenario, not a diagnosis of every forbidden response. The practical choice is to use Galaxy as the alternate route for the browser 403 case, then read any code Galaxy reports if its download also fails. Avoid assuming that a browser error means the game is unavailable or that changing a local storage setting will resolve it.
When to retry, and when to contact GOG Support
For E3, which indicates a failed connection to GOG.com servers, and E9, which indicates an unknown error returned by GOG.com servers, retry later or follow GOG’s current support guidance. Neither code establishes that changing a local setting will solve the problem. For E6, verify account ownership; for E7, check availability. Those stated causes are not repaired by downloading the same files again.
If the error persists after the code-specific step, use the relevant GOG Support Center article or submit a support request with the exact code and a concise description of what failed: download start, download completion, installation, or update. It is also useful to say which route you tried—Galaxy or offline installers—and whether the same code came back. Avoid posting system reports publicly. GOG cautions that these reports can contain personal information.
There is no named failure-frequency or success-rate figure in GOG’s support guidance, so do not infer that one error code is necessarily more common than another. The best escalation information is the actual message, the affected stage, and the official steps already attempted. Keep any system report within the support process rather than sharing it publicly, since it may contain personal information.
A quick decision path
- E8: Check free space at both the game installation and temporary update locations.
- E4: Check folder access and configured locations as well as available space.
- E5: Close the game, then retry the update.
- E2: Use the dependency-folder procedure or the offline installer alternative.
- E1: Try another supported download method; with offline installers, ensure every required part is present.
- E3 or E9: Retry later or check GOG’s current support guidance rather than assuming a particular local fix.
- E6 or E7: Check ownership or availability, respectively.
- Browser 403: Try Galaxy for the specific IP-mismatch scenario documented by GOG.
- No code: Identify whether the failure is downloading, installing, or updating, then try the relevant official alternative and contact GOG if it continues.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I check first when a GOG GALAXY download or install fails?
Write down the full error code or label before changing settings. Then identify whether Galaxy failed to connect or start a download, stopped before the download completed, or failed during installation or an update. GOG assigns different causes to E1–E9, so the exact code is more useful than guessing at a general network, antivirus, or storage problem.

What is the difference between GOG GALAXY error E4 and E8?
E4 is a disk access error during installation or an update; E8 means insufficient free disk space. Check both the Games installation folder and Temporary game update folder in Settings > Installing, updating. For E4, check whether your account can access the selected folders as well as whether they have enough space.
How do I fix GOG GALAXY E2?
E2 means Galaxy failed to finalize an update because dependency installation failed at the end of installation. GOG’s procedure is to exit Galaxy from the cogwheel menu, open its installation directory, rename Dependencies-Temp to Dependencies, merge with the existing folder if prompted, and reopen Galaxy. Use this folder procedure only for E2. GOG also suggests installing the game with its offline installer and waiting for it to appear in Galaxy’s Installed view.
Can I install a GOG game without Galaxy?
Yes. In your GOG account library, select the purchased game, download its offline backup game installers, and run the setup application after every required installer part has downloaded. Missing required files can prevent installation. This route is also an alternative when Galaxy itself is the obstacle.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why does my browser download from GOG return a 403 error?
GOG documents a specific scenario where the connection may use a different IP address for GOG’s site and its file-hosting provider. For that case, GOG recommends Galaxy, which uses a different authentication method. That explanation does not establish the cause of every 403 response.
Should I use Galaxy or offline installers?
Use Galaxy when its download path works or when troubleshooting GOG’s documented browser 403 scenario; GOG describes it as supporting pause/resume, automatic updates, and protection against download corruption. Use offline installers when Galaxy is the obstacle or you want standalone setup files to keep. GOG’s guidance does not establish that either approach is always faster or more reliable.
What should I do if I get E3, E6, E7, or E9?
E3 means Galaxy could not connect to GOG.com servers, and E9 means GOG.com servers returned an unknown error; retry later or follow GOG’s current support guidance. E6 means no valid copy is owned, so check that you are signed in to the account that owns the game. E7 means the game is no longer available, so check availability. Reinstalling does not address the stated causes of E6 or E7.
Is it safe to post a GOG system report publicly when asking for help?
GOG cautions that system reports can contain personal information. If the official troubleshooting steps fail, contact GOG Support with the exact code and a brief description of whether the failure occurred during download, installation, or update. Avoid sharing system reports publicly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
Use the exact GOG GALAXY code to choose the fix: E8 is a free-space issue, E4 is a folder-access issue, E5 means close the running game, and E2 has a specific dependency-finalization procedure. For corrupted or incomplete downloads, switch between Galaxy and the offline backup installers as appropriate, and make sure every required installer part is present. If the code points to ownership, availability, or a server-side problem, follow that branch instead of repeating unrelated storage or download fixes.
