An Unsupported badge is not a diagnosis and usually is not a permanent block. It means Valve does not currently consider the game playable on Steam Deck. Open the game’s Steam Deck Compatibility details to see why, then work through updates, file verification, a deliberate Proton test, and the game’s own operating-system and hardware requirements. Reserve SteamOS reset or re-imaging for system-wide failures, not one game.
What “Unsupported” means on Steam Deck
Valve’s Deck Verified system assigns every tested title one of four categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown. Valve describes the Unsupported image as: “The game is currently not considered playable on Steam Deck.” The label reflects the current state of the game, SteamOS, Proton and Valve’s testing; it can change after a game, compatibility layer or SteamOS update.

Unsupported is therefore a warning to investigate, not a single error code. The Store page’s Steam Deck Compatibility section identifies the unmet requirement. It may concern a launcher, controls, text legibility, performance, anti-cheat, or the game’s operating-system support. Record that detail before changing settings so you know what each troubleshooting step is testing.
Why an Unsupported game may still start
Deck ratings describe Valve’s current compatibility assessment, not whether the executable is technically prevented from running. A title can be labelled Unsupported yet launch after a Proton change, a game update, or a workaround for a particular launcher. The reverse is also possible: a game that once worked can stop launching when its files, anti-cheat component, Proton behavior or SteamOS version changes.

When the label really is a hard limitation
Some games depend on a Windows feature, anti-cheat service, launcher flow, controller behavior or hardware capability that Proton cannot reproduce. Steam also displays “Game is not available on your current platform” when a title does not support the operating system in use. Proton improves compatibility with many Windows games, but it cannot guarantee that every Windows-only title will run.
Do these low-risk checks first
1. Read the compatibility detail
- Open the game’s page in the Steam Store.
- Expand Steam Deck Compatibility.
- Write down each unmet item and any explanatory text.
This tells you whether you are investigating controls, readability, performance, a launcher, anti-cheat or platform support. Do not assume that forcing Proton will solve a control or performance warning.
2. Update SteamOS and the Steam client
- In Gaming Mode, open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Install every available update and allow it to finish.
- Choose Steam > Power > Restart.
A restart applies pending client and system changes and clears a temporary process that may be holding the game or its compatibility prefix open.
3. Temporarily disable Desktop Mode additions
Exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, then retry the game. Overlay tools, replacement launchers and system tweaks can interfere with startup. If the game launches after they are disabled, re-enable them one at a time to identify the conflict.
Repair the installation
Verify the game files
- Open Library and highlight the game.
- Open Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the scan, then launch the game again.
An incomplete download or damaged file can cause an immediate crash or leave the game at “Preparing to Launch.” Verification downloads replacements when Steam finds a mismatch.
Steam may report that one or more files failed verification because local configuration files are intentionally not replaced. That message by itself does not prove the installation is broken. Relaunch after the check; repeat the scan only if the game continues to fail and you have a specific reason to suspect corruption.
What verification can and cannot fix
- It can address: missing, incomplete or changed files in the Steam installation.
- It cannot address: an unsupported operating system, a blocked anti-cheat service, an incompatible launcher, insufficient hardware performance or a Proton regression.
Test Proton deliberately for a Windows game
For a Windows build, Proton is Steam’s compatibility layer. Testing a current Proton release is useful when the Store page shows an operating-system or launch-compatibility problem, but change one variable at a time so the result is meaningful.

- In Library, highlight the game.
- Open Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose the latest Proton release offered by Steam.
- Close Properties and launch the game.
If Steam had installed only a Linux build, forcing Proton may make it download the Windows build instead. That can require additional disk space and a fresh first launch while Steam creates the Proton environment.
Retest after each Proton change
Keep a short record of the Proton version, whether the game reached its launcher or menu, and the exact error. If the latest release fails, another installed Proton version may behave differently, but avoid changing several versions, launch options and files at once. A clean comparison is the only way to identify which setting helped.

Recognize Proton’s limits
Proton is not a universal emulator. A title can remain incompatible because of kernel-level anti-cheat, a proprietary launcher, unsupported media or copy-protection technology, required Windows services, or graphics and CPU demands beyond the Deck. If the compatibility detail identifies one of these conditions, treat a failed Proton test as evidence of a product limitation rather than a damaged Deck.
Check the game’s platform and hardware requirements
Confirm the operating system
Read the game’s Store page requirements and platform information. Steam’s message “Game is not available on your current platform” means the title does not support the operating system currently being used. A Windows-only listing does not promise Proton compatibility; it only identifies the platform for which the publisher released the game.

Check the minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, memory, storage and graphics API requirements against the Deck model you own. A game can launch and still fail during shader compilation, loading or a crowded scene when its minimum requirements are not met. If the compatibility detail cites performance, a Proton change may not resolve the underlying hardware demand.
Separate launch failure from performance failure
- Fails before a window or menu appears: prioritize updates, verification, Proton and launcher or anti-cheat compatibility.
- Reaches the menu but stutters or crashes in play: compare hardware and graphics requirements and treat the Deck Compatibility performance note as the primary clue.
- Controls or text are unusable: a Proton change is unlikely to fix the specific Verified requirement; look for the game’s controller or display settings and community reports for that title.
Use launch options only for a specific symptom
Launch options are entered at Library > Properties > General > Launch Options. Valve documents them as a way to recover from incompatible video settings and gives examples including -autoconfig, -windowed and -novid.
Apply one option, then remove it if it does not help
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Stay on General and locate Launch Options.
- Enter one option that matches the symptom.
- Launch and observe whether the behavior changes.
- Delete the option if it has no effect or worsens startup.
Many options in Valve’s documentation are specific to particular Valve engines. Do not copy a long list of commands to an unrelated game. An option that changes nothing can obscure the original failure and make later support harder.
Match the fix to the symptom
The same Unsupported badge can represent very different problems. A launcher warning points toward the publisher’s launcher flow, while a control warning concerns input mapping. A performance warning is a hardware or graphics-settings question, not automatically a Proton question. An anti-cheat warning may indicate that the service does not support SteamOS or Proton at all. Use the text under Steam Deck Compatibility as the primary clue instead of applying every workaround in sequence.
Launcher and account failures
If the game reaches a separate launcher and stops there, note whether the launcher opens, asks for an account, or closes immediately. This distinction helps the developer or Steam Play community reproduce the problem. Verification can repair launcher files stored with the game, but it cannot make an account service or proprietary launcher compatible with SteamOS. Avoid deleting configuration data unless support specifically instructs you, because local settings may be useful evidence.
Anti-cheat and service restrictions
Online games can require an anti-cheat component or Windows service before they allow a session. A Proton version change is worth testing when the compatibility details suggest general Windows compatibility, but it cannot override a service that deliberately blocks the operating system. If an anti-cheat requirement is listed, check the developer’s support channel for its current Steam Deck policy and include the exact error in any report.
Controls, text and accessibility
When the game launches but fails a controller or readability requirement, forcing Proton is unlikely to change the underlying design. Check the game’s own controller, display and text settings and record whether the issue is present in menus, gameplay or only a launcher. This is also a case where a title-specific community discussion can be more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

Keep troubleshooting tests reproducible
Change one setting, launch once, and write down the result. A useful note includes the date, SteamOS version, Steam client status, Proton version, whether a Windows build was downloaded, and where the game stopped. “Returned to Library immediately” is different evidence from “launcher opened but login failed” or “menu opened but gameplay crashed.” Reverting a failed test before trying the next one prevents several changes from becoming impossible to untangle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAllow Steam to finish downloads and first-run setup before judging a Proton change. Switching builds can create a new compatibility prefix and consume additional storage. If the new build does not help, return to the previous setting in Properties > Compatibility rather than continuing to stack launch commands or third-party tweaks.
Choose the next step by evidence, reversibility and risk
| Step | Primary scope | What it tests | Reversibility and data risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update, restart and disable Desktop Mode additions | Deck and client state | Temporary software or process instability | Fully reversible; no data loss |
| Verify integrity of game files | One installation | Missing or corrupted game files | Reversible; saves and settings are normally retained, while mismatched installation files may be redownloaded |
| Force a Proton version | One Windows game | Compatibility-layer behavior or a Proton regression | Reversible in Properties; may download another game build or prefix |
| Check requirements and platform support | One game | Operating-system, anti-cheat or hardware limitation | No system change; no data risk |
| Use a targeted launch option | One game’s startup command | Video-mode or engine-specific startup problems | Reversible by deleting the option; no data loss |
| Contact the developer, Steam Play community or Steam Support | Title-specific or Deck-wide diagnosis | Known bugs, regressions and unsupported components | No data risk; requires diagnostic details |
| Rollback, factory reset or re-image SteamOS | Whole device | Broad OS corruption or boot failure | High impact; reset and re-image actions can remove local data |
When “Preparing to Launch” never finishes
Interpret the symptom
A long “Preparing to Launch” phase can result from a pending download, a damaged installation, Proton prefix creation, or a launcher that never completes. It is not proof that the Unsupported badge itself is blocking execution.
Use this order
- Check Downloads for a queued update and let it finish.
- Restart Steam Deck from Steam > Power > Restart.
- Verify files through Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- For a Windows game, test the latest Proton through Properties > Compatibility.
- Remove any launch option that did not clearly address the symptom.
- Retry with Desktop Mode additions disabled.
If the game still returns to the Library without opening, capture the exact timing and any error text. “Preparing to Launch” followed by an immediate stop is different evidence from a game that opens and then crashes at a launcher or menu.
Escalate with useful diagnostic information
What to record
- The game title and edition.
- The complete Steam Deck Compatibility detail and unmet requirement.
- SteamOS version and Steam client update status.
- Proton version tested and whether Steam downloaded a Windows build.
- Whether file verification completed and what message it displayed.
- The exact error text, where the failure occurs and whether the game ever reaches a menu.
- Any launch option used and whether Desktop Mode applications were disabled.
Where to ask
Use the game developer’s support channel for title-specific launchers, account services, anti-cheat and game bugs. Consult Steam Play community discussions and the Proton GitHub bug database for compatibility-layer failures and known regressions. Open a Steam Support ticket when game-level checks are complete and the problem appears to involve Steam or the Deck itself. A concise timeline and the details above are more useful than reporting only that the game is marked Unsupported.
Do not reset SteamOS for one game
SteamOS documents rollback, factory reset, erase-user-data and re-image or repair paths. These options are intended for broad operating-system corruption, repeated system-wide failures or boot problems. They are not the first response to one Unsupported title.
When recovery is justified
- Several unrelated games and Steam functions fail in the same way.
- SteamOS cannot boot normally or system files are visibly corrupted.
- Support has established an OS-level fault and recommended a recovery path.
Protect data before a reset or re-image
Read the recovery screen’s wording carefully: reset and re-image actions can remove local data. Back up saves, screenshots, non-Steam files and any configuration you need before proceeding. If only one game fails while the rest of the Deck works, keep recovery as a last resort and continue with title-specific support instead.

- Inspect the Store page: identify the exact unmet Steam Deck requirement.
- Update and restart: install SteamOS and client updates, restart, and disable Desktop Mode additions.
- Repair files: run Steam’s integrity check and relaunch.
- Test Proton: for a Windows build, force the latest Proton and retest without changing other variables.
- Validate support: compare the operating-system, anti-cheat and hardware requirements with the Deck.
- Try one targeted launch option: use it only for a matching video or startup symptom, then remove it if ineffective.
- Escalate: provide versions, errors, compatibility text and test results to the developer, Proton community or Steam Support.
- Recover SteamOS only for system-wide faults: back up data before any reset or re-image.
This sequence moves from low-risk, high-information checks to increasingly disruptive actions. It also distinguishes a fixable installation or Proton problem from a game that currently lacks the platform, anti-cheat or hardware support required to run on Steam Deck.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Unsupported badge a hard block on Steam Deck?
No. It means Valve does not currently consider the game playable on Steam Deck. Some Unsupported titles launch after updates or a Proton change, while others remain incompatible because of launchers, anti-cheat, operating-system or hardware requirements.

Can I force Proton for an Unsupported game?
For a Windows game, open Library, select Properties, choose Compatibility, enable “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool,” and test the latest Proton release. Change only Proton first so you can tell whether it helped.
Why is my game stuck on Preparing to Launch?
A queued download, damaged files, Proton prefix creation or a launcher that never completes can all cause this symptom. Finish downloads, restart, verify files, test Proton for a Windows build, remove ineffective launch options and retry with Desktop Mode additions disabled.
Will verifying files delete my saves?
The integrity check repairs Steam installation files and normally retains saves and settings. Steam can report that local configuration files failed verification because they are intentionally not replaced; that message alone does not show that the game is broken.
Why did forcing Proton download the game again?
If Steam had installed a Linux build, forcing Proton may select the Windows build. Steam can therefore download additional files and create a fresh Proton environment, requiring extra storage and a longer first launch.

Steam uses that message when the title does not support the operating system currently in use. Proton may improve compatibility for some Windows games, but a Windows-only listing is not a guarantee that the title will run on SteamOS.
Should I use launch options copied from another game?
Only use one option that matches the symptom. Valve’s examples include -autoconfig, -windowed and -novid, but many commands are engine-specific. Remove an option if it changes nothing or makes startup worse.
When should I contact Steam Support instead of the developer?
Contact the developer for title-specific launchers, account services, anti-cheat and game bugs. Use Steam Play discussions or the Proton issue tracker for compatibility-layer failures. Contact Steam Support when those checks are complete and the problem appears to involve Steam or the Deck itself.
Should I factory-reset my Steam Deck because one game will not launch?
No. Rollback, factory reset, erase-user-data and re-image options are for broad OS corruption, boot failures or repeated system-wide problems. They can remove local data, so use them only after support establishes an OS-level fault and you have backed up needed files.
The Bottom Line
An Unsupported rating is a compatibility warning, not a diagnosis. Read the specific Steam Deck requirement, update and restart, verify the installation, test a current Proton version for Windows games, and compare the title’s platform and hardware needs with your Deck. Record what happens at each step and escalate with those details. Reset SteamOS only when multiple system functions fail or support identifies a device-wide problem.
