First identify where the failure occurs: a demo may be missing from your library, stuck downloading, failing to install, or installed but unable to launch. The right fix depends on the exact Steam error, your operating system, and whether other Steam downloads work. Restart Steam and your computer, then follow the branch below that matches what you see.
Identify the failure before changing settings
Note the exact error text, your operating system, and whether the demo has ever launched successfully. Also check whether other Steam downloads work. A stalled download, an installation error, an unsupported-platform message, and a failed launch point to different causes; Steam has separate guidance for each.

- Demo absent from the Library: check whether Steam has completed adding or installing it, then restart Steam and the computer.
- Queued, stuck, or failed download: start with the download cache and content-server region.
- Installation or update error: inspect the Steam library folder and any partial installation.
- Installed but will not open: verify files, confirm platform support, then use any specific error message to choose the next step.

If the demo will not download or install
Clear Steam’s download cache
In Steam, open Steam → Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache. Steam says clearing the cache can resolve games that will not download or start. It does not remove installed games, but you will need to sign in to Steam again afterward. Retry the demo once you are signed in. See Steam Support’s Clear download cache steps.

Test a nearby download region
Open Steam → Settings → Downloads and check Download Region. Steam uses content servers in geographic regions. If downloads are unusually slow or a region may be unavailable, try your local region or a nearby alternative, then restore your preferred region after testing. Repair the library folder if Steam reports an installation error
In Steam, open Settings → Storage, select the relevant library, and use the library repair option. Steam notes that library-folder permissions can become unusable for updates. If some files were installed before the error, verify the demo’s files using the steps in the next section. The available storage and repair controls can vary with the Steam client; follow the current labels shown in your client. See Steam’s update and installation guidance.

Use another existing library as a diagnostic
If the install still fails, try installing the demo to another drive or Steam library you already have access to. If that works, the original storage location may be involved; this is a way to narrow down the cause, not a requirement to buy a drive. If you have broader signs of storage trouble, Steam also suggests checking the drive for errors.
Investigate network or security software only when the symptoms fit
Firewalls, packet-filtering tools, security software, router settings, or internet configuration can interfere with Steam connections. Consider them when multiple downloads fail or the error points to connectivity. Do not broadly disable security protection; use the relevant Steam connection guidance to investigate the specific issue.

If the demo installs but will not launch
Verify the demo’s installed files
In the Library, right-click the demo and choose Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. The check may take several minutes. Steam notes that one or more files can fail verification without indicating a broken installation when they are local configuration files that Steam does not replace. Check this demo’s operating-system and hardware support
Open the demo’s own Steam Store page and compare its listed operating systems and system requirements with your computer. Do not assume that a demo supports every platform supported by the full game, or that another demo from the same developer has the same requirements. If Steam says “Game is not available on your current platform,” Steam Support says the title does not support the operating system you are using. Check the demo’s listing and Steam’s platform-availability explanation.

Update the operating system and relevant drivers
Check for operating-system updates and update relevant graphics or other device drivers, then compare your computer with the demo’s listed requirements. Steam includes operating-system and driver checks in its general launch guidance for Windows, Linux, and macOS. See Games do not run after “Preparing to Launch”.
Test for a software conflict carefully
If another application may be interfering, close non-essential software temporarily and try launching the demo again. Treat this as a diagnostic test rather than a reason to remove security software: Steam lists interfering applications as one possible cause, but the symptom alone does not identify a culprit.

Fixes for specific Steam launch errors
“App already running”
The game may have crashed silently or left a process running. On Windows, open Task Manager and end the demo’s process if it is still present, or restart the computer. If you use the Steam client beta, try leaving the beta and launching again. On macOS or Linux, Steam recommends restarting. If the message persists, contact the game’s support team. See Steam’s “app already running” guidance.
“Missing Executable”
Check your antivirus or other security software’s history for a game file it blocked or quarantined. If you find one, follow that software’s recovery process, then restart Steam and verify the demo’s files. If the error remains, submit a Steam Support ticket with an uncropped screenshot of the error and a system report, as Steam requests. See Steam’s Missing Executable instructions.
“This game is currently unavailable”
Start with a restart, then check drivers, verify the demo’s files, and consider permissions or network problems. Steam’s error-specific guidance also describes launching a third-party game executable from its installation folder to reveal a more specific error. This is an advanced diagnostic: the executable’s location varies by game, so do not guess at a path. Some games use secondary installers for dependencies; a canceled or blocked installer may prevent launch. See Steam’s “This game is currently unavailable” troubleshooting.
When to contact Steam Support or the developer
If the relevant steps do not resolve the problem, use Steam Support or the game’s Support area to contact the developer. Include details that help distinguish a Steam-client problem from a demo-specific issue:
- The exact error message and a screenshot.
- Your operating system and version.
- Whether the demo worked before and whether other Steam downloads work.
- The steps you have already tried and what happened after each one.
For a Missing Executable error, include the uncropped screenshot and system report specifically requested by Steam Support. Persistent problems can be specific to one demo, so the developer may be the appropriate contact after the general Steam checks.
