Rather than invent a first-person list, this guide explains what Skills do, who can use them according to Google’s current help page, and how to make one useful for a repetitive prompt.
What Gemini Skills do
Google describes Skills as saved custom instructions you can use across Gemini chats and tasks. Gemini may recognize when a Skill is relevant and apply it in the background, or you can ask for a particular Skill. Google also says multiple Skills can be combined for a more complex workflow. These are intended behaviors, not a guarantee that Gemini will select or follow a Skill perfectly in every response. Google’s Skills help page has the current product details.

Who can use Skills, and where
Google says Skills are rolling out gradually. Its current help page lists these requirements and platforms; availability may change as the rollout continues:

Ways to create a Skill
Google documents four creation paths. They are options rather than a performance ranking:
| Method | When it fits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Create with Gemini | You can describe the recurring task in ordinary language and want help turning it into instructions. | Gemini assists with creating the Skill; review the resulting wording before using it. |
| Edit a recommended template | A suggested starting point is close to your task. | Adapt the template so its scope and output match your own use. |
| Create manually | You want direct control over the instructions. | Write the reusable directions yourself. |
| Upload a file or folder | Your instructions are already organized as files, or the Skill needs reference material. | The Skill file must be named SKILL.md; supported reference files are optional. |
Google says scripts that require internet access are not supported in Skills. Reference files must be uploaded with the Skill; they cannot simply be fetched from an external location while the Skill runs. See Google’s instructions for creating and managing Skills for the current interface and supported file details.

How to write instructions for a repetitive prompt
A reusable Skill works best when it tells Gemini what outcome to produce and what constraints matter, rather than merely naming a task. Google’s guidance on custom Gems recommends specifying the goal, desired behavior, background context, and preferred response format. That advice is documented for Gems, not stated as a formal Skills requirement, but it is a useful way to shape clear reusable instructions. Google’s custom Gems guidance also describes reviewing and editing instructions before saving.
- Define the recurring task. State what you want Gemini to do and when the instruction should apply.
- Provide necessary context. Include relevant audience, terminology, constraints, or reference material. Do not assume Gemini will know details that are not in the instruction or uploaded files.
- Describe the behavior. Specify the steps, priorities, or checks that should shape the response.
- Set the output format. Say whether you need, for example, a short summary, a checklist, or a structured draft, and identify any required fields.
- Review with a representative prompt. Check whether the result follows the instructions; refine ambiguous or conflicting directions.
For a genuinely reusable Skill, keep stable preferences in the instructions and provide task-specific facts in the chat where they are needed. This helps avoid turning a general Skill into a brittle prompt tied to one example.

What happens to Gems
Gems are customized versions of Gemini for repeat goals and guidelines. Google’s Gems help page states: “Starting in November 2026, Gems will go away on personal Google accounts and automatically transition to skills.” That is a future change announced by Google, not a statement that the transition has already happened. Check the current Gems help page for updates to the timing or wording.
