What Verified does—and does not—mean
Valve uses four Steam Deck compatibility categories. Verified means a game works great on Deck by default without additional modification. Playable means it works but may require manual configuration. Unsupported means Valve does not currently consider it playable, while Unknown means Valve has not tested it. For the requirements a particular Verified game is expected to meet, check the Steam Deck Compatibility section on that game’s Steam Store page. The rating does not identify what is wrong in your current session. A control issue may be limited to the game’s active layout, while poor performance may reflect settings or intermittent frame-time spikes. The steps below help separate those possibilities without assuming a cause for a game that has not been identified.

- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available SteamOS update.
- Restart from the power menu or the update screen.
- If you installed third-party apps through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily, then launch the game and check whether the problem remains.

For control problems, check the layout and input registration separately
First determine whether the Deck detects the controls and whether the problem belongs to one game’s mapping. The built-in input test checks registration; the game’s control settings show which layout is active.
- Open the game’s library details and go to its gamepad or control settings.
- Inspect the active layout. If it appears mismatched, edit it or browse and apply a community layout, then test the controls in the game.
- To check whether the Deck registers button and stick inputs, open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs.
If the input test registers the controls but the game responds incorrectly, focus on that game’s active layout. If the test does not register an input, the problem is not explained by that game’s layout alone. For performance trouble, watch the overlay while reproducing it
Open Steam’s in-game performance monitor and observe the game during the moment the slowdown or stutter happens. The monitor can show FPS and available CPU, GPU, and system RAM readings. A steady-looking average FPS does not rule out stutter: a single unusually long frame can be visible, and minimum FPS can help expose drops that an average hides. If performance is poor under load, try lowering the graphics preset or reducing demanding settings individually. If the average appears acceptable but the game still hitches, keep the monitor open while reproducing the hitch and check minimum FPS and the other available readings rather than treating average FPS as a complete diagnosis.

Try one game-specific compatibility change at a time
For a Steam game, open Library > select the game > Properties > Compatibility. If appropriate, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and try the latest Proton version suggested by Steam’s guide. Record the original setting, change only one item, and retest before trying another option.
Changing the compatibility tool can also change which game build Steam downloads: Steam may automatically download the Windows build if only the Linux version was installed. Keep refresh-rate expectations within your model’s limit
Steam Deck LCD displays are capped at 60 Hz; OLED displays are capped at 90 Hz. You can lower the refresh rate, but setting an individual game above the device’s cap does not improve performance and may drain the battery faster. Match the game’s refresh-rate setting to the LCD or OLED model you own. Valve’s Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide
If the issue persists
- After updating and restarting, consider opting into the Steam Deck Beta to see whether it addresses a persistent stability or performance problem. Beta software is an optional troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
- Check SteamOS and Steam Deck discussions for reports relevant to the game and symptom.
- If the problem remains, contact Steam Support. Include the game name, the exact control or performance symptom, when it began, and the settings or troubleshooting steps you have already changed.
