First identify which Steam Controller you have: the 2026 model charges over USB-C and with a charging puck, while the 2015 model uses micro-USB. The troubleshooting steps differ, so do not try to apply the newer model’s USB-C instructions to a 2015 controller.
Identify the controller before troubleshooting
Check the controller’s connector and the documentation for your model. Valve’s Steam Controller (2026) feature and troubleshooting guide covers USB-C charging and the charging puck. Valve’s Steam Controller (2015) troubleshooting page specifies micro-USB. Use the procedure for your model.

Check the 2026 controller and puck safely
Inspect components first
Before connecting anything, look for damage to the controller, puck, cable, or connector. Valve’s Steam Controller (2026) safety and warranty manual says, “Do not use any cable or component if damaged.” Do not bend contacts, modify the puck, or pull the puck apart as a repair attempt. Compare puck charging with USB-C
- Connect the 2026 controller using a suitable USB-C charging cable, rather than the puck, and check the controller’s status light.
- Then place it on the puck and check the light again.
- Note whether the light’s behavior changes between the two routes. If USB-C indicates charging but the puck does not, the issue appears limited to the puck-side charging path. That comparison does not establish whether the puck, its connection, or another part is at fault.
Valve documents USB-C as an alternate charging route in its 2026 controller guide. A USB-C test is useful for diagnosis; it is not a guarantee that replacing a cable will repair the puck or controller.

Interpret the status light
Use Valve’s Steam Controller LED reference alongside the 2026 troubleshooting guide. The guide describes a breathing light as charging and orange as no connection while charging; the LED reference also documents orange breathing as disconnected but charging. Follow the reference’s exact pattern descriptions rather than treating color alone as a definitive diagnosis.
A light pattern reports the controller’s indicated state; it does not measure battery capacity or prove that the percentage is increasing. If you need to confirm the charge level, check the controller’s reported battery level after allowing it to charge, rather than relying on the light alone.

Troubleshoot a 2015 controller with micro-USB
Do not use the 2026 model’s USB-C and puck procedure for a 2015 controller. Valve’s 2015 controller troubleshooting page recommends this test:
- Remove the batteries from the controller.
- Connect the controller to a computer using a micro-USB cable and a USB 2.0 port.
- If it does not respond as expected, try another USB port.
This is the model-specific wired test provided by Valve; it is not a USB-C charging procedure.

When to contact Steam Support
If the appropriate wired test does not resolve the issue, or a 2026 controller charges over USB-C but not on its puck, give Valve Support the model and the results of each charging-path test. Valve’s 2026 guide directs users with unresolved device problems to Steam Support. Do not open the 2026 controller to investigate the battery or attempt battery replacement unless Valve provides instructions for your case. The manual says damaged batteries require qualified service and advises contacting Valve for other device problems.
