It streams games over broadband Wi-Fi: either from a connected PS5 using Remote Play, or from Sony’s cloud service for eligible games with PlayStation Plus Premium. Portal does not run downloaded games locally, so an internet connection is necessary in either mode.
How PlayStation Portal plays games
Portal is a screen and controller for streamed gameplay, not a standalone console. Its two supported play modes have different requirements and game libraries.

| Remote Play | Your PS5 | Broadband Wi-Fi for Portal; a PS5 connected to broadband, powered on or in Rest Mode; Remote Play enabled; the same PlayStation account on both devices. A PlayStation Plus membership is not required for Remote Play itself. | Compatible PS5 and PS4 games installed on that PS5. |
| Cloud Streaming | Sony’s cloud service | Broadband Wi-Fi, a PlayStation account, an active PS Plus Premium membership, an adult account, and a supported country or region. | Select PS5 games from the PS Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus select digital PS5 games in Your Library. |
| Offline local play | Not available on Portal | Not supported as a Portal play mode. | Portal does not have a documented mode for downloading and running games locally. |
Cloud Streaming availability depends on the game, account and region; consult Sony’s cloud streaming and Remote Play overview and its current Portal cloud-streaming support page for eligibility.
Can you play PlayStation Portal without internet?
No. Both Portal modes stream gameplay over broadband Wi-Fi. Remote Play also needs the PS5 to stay connected to broadband. Even if a game can run offline on the PS5 itself, Portal still needs a network connection to receive the picture and send controller input. Sony does not document downloading games onto Portal for local play.

Do you need a PS5?
You need a PS5 for Remote Play, because that is where the game runs. You do not need a PS5 for Portal’s Cloud Streaming mode, but that mode requires PS Plus Premium and is limited to supported regions, adult accounts and eligible PS5 games. Neither mode offers offline local play.
Do you need PS Plus?
Remote Play does not require PS Plus just to use Portal. A particular game may still require an active membership for its online multiplayer features. Cloud Streaming on Portal is different: it requires an active PS Plus Premium membership. Sony’s Portal FAQ states that Remote Play itself does not require PS Plus.
What internet speed does PlayStation Portal need?
Sony’s published connection guidance distinguishes general Portal use from Cloud Streaming. These are requirements and recommendations, not guarantees of smooth play: Sony says the experience can vary with the network environment and game.

| Use | Sony’s published speed guidance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Portal use, including Remote Play | At least 5 Mbps; 15 Mbps recommended for a better Remote Play experience. | Sony’s current product FAQ guidance, accessed October 7, 2026; not a performance guarantee. |
| Cloud Streaming: start a session | At least 5 Mbps. | Sony’s Portal cloud-streaming support guidance. |
| Cloud Streaming: 720p | At least 7 Mbps. | Resolution adjusts according to connection quality. |
| Cloud Streaming: 1080p | At least 13 Mbps. | Resolution adjusts according to connection quality; after changing the maximum resolution, restart the streaming game. |
The cloud figures are separate from the general Portal guidance. Sony’s cloud-streaming support page lists the session and resolution thresholds; its product FAQ gives the general minimum and Remote Play recommendation.

Improve a Remote Play connection
- Connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet where possible.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal when available.
- If the PS5 is on Wi-Fi, Sony recommends putting Portal and PS5 on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Test Portal near the PS5 before relying on a connection away from home.
These are Sony’s recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection will perform identically in every home. See the Remote Play setup guidance.
Which games can Portal play?
Remote Play: compatible games installed on PS5
Remote Play streams compatible PS5 and PS4 games installed on the paired PS5. Portal connects to PS5 consoles, not PS4 consoles; this does not prevent you from streaming a compatible PS4 game that is running on a PS5. Sony’s compatibility page lists these limits.
- Games requiring PlayStation VR or PlayStation VR2 are not supported.
- Games that require additional peripherals outside the supported DualShock 4, DualSense or DualSense Edge controller categories are not supported.
- Games that must be streamed on PS5 using PS Plus Premium are not compatible with Remote Play.
- PS5 Media-tab apps are not supported through Remote Play.
Cloud Streaming: select PS5 games
Portal Cloud Streaming supports select PS5 titles from the PS Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, as well as select digital PS5 games in Your Library. Sony’s support page says PS3 and PS4 games are not available in Portal Cloud Streaming. The eligible selection changes and varies by country or region, so check Sony’s live cloud-streaming game and eligibility information rather than assuming a catalog title will stream on Portal.

Can you use Portal away from home or on public Wi-Fi?
Yes, provided the connection and the play mode’s other requirements are met. For Remote Play away from home, the PS5 must remain connected to broadband and be powered on or configured for Rest Mode access. Cloud Streaming does not need your own PS5, but it still needs a supported account, region, membership and game.

Sony says Portal can connect to a range of public Wi-Fi networks. On system software version 3.0.1 or later, some networks with additional validation steps are supported; completing validation requires a smartphone or tablet. Initial Portal setup must first be completed on home Wi-Fi. Public network quality may be outside your control. See Sony’s Portal FAQ for details.
Set up Remote Play on your PS5
- Connect the PS5 to the internet and sign in with the PlayStation account you will use on Portal.
- Update PS5 system software. On PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- If you want Portal to connect while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Leave the PS5 powered on or in Rest Mode. For the most reliable setup Sony recommends Ethernet for the console and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal where possible.
- Connect Portal while near the PS5 and confirm it works before attempting to play from another location.
Sony’s Remote Play instructions cover setup and network recommendations.
Do you need a headset or other accessories?
No audio accessory is required. Portal has built-in speakers and supports wired headsets or earbuds with a 3.5 mm audio jack, as well as PlayStation Link wireless devices such as PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset. Sony lists these options on its compatibility page.
