If the TV menu appears, the set is on and can display its interface; check the selected input, connected device and cables. If the menu does not appear, troubleshoot the TV’s power or contact Samsung Support rather than assuming the problem is an HDMI connection.
Start by checking whether the TV menu appears
Press the Home or Menu button on the remote. Samsung treats this as the first split in its black-screen troubleshooting guide:

- The menu appears: The TV is powered on and displaying its interface. Focus first on the selected source, external device and connections.
- The menu does not appear: The issue may involve the TV’s power, not just the incoming picture signal. Follow Samsung’s no-power checks or contact Samsung Support; continuing to swap HDMI equipment may not address the problem.
If the menu appears, check the input and source
Match the TV input to the connected device
Confirm which HDMI port the source device uses, then select that same input on the TV. For example, a device plugged into HDMI 1 needs the TV set to HDMI 1. Also make sure the device itself is turned on.

Reconnect and inspect cables
Turn off the connected device, then disconnect and reconnect its cables at both ends, one cable at a time. Look for visible damage and replace a damaged cable. Once everything is reconnected, turn the external device back on.

Use the HDMI cable test only if your model supports it
Some Samsung TVs offer an on-screen HDMI cable test, but it is not available on every model and may require a software update before it appears. Samsung says the test is intended for short cables; results may be inaccurate with longer ones. If the test identifies a bad cable, replace it—Samsung says that result alone does not require TV service. Check the Samsung instructions for your model for availability and steps.
Swap one part of the setup at a time
Try another cable, another TV input or a different external device. If a different combination displays a picture, the TV is not the cause in that working setup. Continue changing one component at a time to narrow down whether the original device, cable or port is responsible. If you need a replacement cable, choose one suited to the connected devices’ resolution and refresh-rate requirements; a new cable is not a general fix when the TV cannot show its own menu.

Follow the separate path for a One Connect Box
If your TV uses a One Connect Box, use Samsung’s specific troubleshooting steps for that setup. The box changes the connection path, so instructions for a TV without one may not apply. Samsung’s black-screen guide includes guidance for models with and without the box.
When to try a cold boot or software update
Cold boot a TV that remains accessible
A cold boot may help with some software or menu glitches, but it is a secondary step—not the first move when the screen is inaccessible or the TV’s power is uncertain. Samsung’s instructions are to hold the remote’s Power button until the TV turns off and back on. Without the remote, unplug the TV for 30 seconds, then reconnect it. Update software only when you can safely navigate the TV
Samsung includes software updates among its picture troubleshooting options. The menu path depends on the TV’s model year:
- 2022 and later: All Settings > Support > Software Update > Update Now.
- Older models: Settings > Support > Software Update > Update Now.
Do not turn off the TV during an update. Samsung warns that video and audio settings may return to their defaults afterward. If you cannot see or navigate the interface, or power is uncertain, do not make an update your first troubleshooting step. Samsung’s picture troubleshooting page provides the update guidance.

When to request service
If the menu appears but checking the input, device and connections does not restore the picture—or the menu never appears and power checks do not help—contact Samsung Support. Samsung’s guidance is: “If there’s still no picture on your TV, visit our Support Center to request service.”
