Then check the exact game’s updates and PC requirements, verify its files if it is on Steam, and test further changes one at a time. A crash or stutter is a symptom, not a diagnosis; the right fix depends on the game, Windows version, hardware, and when the problem occurs.
Start by identifying what is failing
Before troubleshooting, note the game and edition, where you launch it (such as Steam), your Windows version, CPU, graphics card, and RAM. Record the exact error message and whether the game closes during startup or after play begins. For stuttering, note whether it happens throughout the game or at a repeatable scene, and whether the rest of the display is affected.

These details help you compare your PC with the requirements for that specific remaster and give support staff a reproducible report. Steam notes that launch failures can have different causes across system configurations (Steam: Games fail to launch).
Check the game’s updates and requirements
Check the game publisher’s announcements or support page for patches and known compatibility issues. Then compare your PC with the game’s own minimum and recommended requirements. Requirements are not interchangeable between remasters: for example, Steam lists separate specifications for Dark Souls: Remastered, but those figures say nothing about another game (Steam: DARK SOULS: REMASTERED).

Steam’s general Windows launch checklist also recommends updating Windows and computer drivers and checking system requirements (Steam: Games fail to launch). Apply updates relevant to your game and hardware, rather than assuming that every crash calls for a driver change.
If you use Steam, verify the game files
- Restart the PC and Steam.
- In your Steam Library, right-click the game and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
Steam says verification can help when game content is missing or the game crashes (Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files). A verification notice that one or more files failed does not, by itself, prove the installation is damaged: Steam says local configuration files may be expected to differ and not be replaced.
Check DirectX and graphics compatibility without guessing
DirectX is part of Windows, and the version and update route depend on the Windows release. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, use Windows Update for the DirectX version included with that system; do not assume a separate generic DirectX package will provide a newer version. Microsoft’s DirectX guidance explains how to check the version and update Windows (Microsoft: How to install the latest version of DirectX).

To view DirectX and driver details, open the Windows search box, type dxdiag, and run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Microsoft describes DxDiag as a way to gather information about DirectX components and drivers (Microsoft: Open and run DxDiag.exe). Whether a particular DirectX feature or graphics setup is suitable still depends on the game’s requirements and support guidance.

For stuttering, test one setting at a time
Change one setting, test the same scene or situation, and note the result before trying another. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped or simply coincided with a temporary improvement.
Confirm the game uses the intended graphics processor
If your PC has more than one GPU, check that the game is assigned to the GPU you intend to use. The available controls vary by PC and Windows configuration, so use your device or graphics vendor’s instructions rather than assuming a single menu path.
Compare display modes if the game supports them
Try windowed or borderless mode against full-screen mode, changing only that option. On Windows 11, Optimizations for windowed games is available for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless mode. Windows lets you turn the optimization off for an individual app; treat it as a narrow compatibility test, not a general stutter fix (Microsoft: Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11).

Stuttering can have causes beyond the game itself. Microsoft lists background startup apps, storage limits, outdated software, and older hardware among possible contributors to slow PC performance (Microsoft: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows). Use that guidance to investigate relevant constraints; it does not establish a universal frame-rate target or a guaranteed performance gain.

If simpler checks fail, isolate software conflicts
Steam recommends disabling non-essential software when troubleshooting launch problems (Steam: Games fail to launch). If you suspect a background app or service is interfering, a Windows clean boot can help test that possibility. It starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs, but it temporarily changes startup behavior.
- Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot steps for your Windows version: Microsoft: How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
- Test whether the game still crashes or stutters.
- After testing, restore normal startup using Microsoft’s instructions and re-enable items you disabled.
Keep track of the changes you make. A clean boot is a diagnostic step, not a permanent configuration to leave in place without reason.
If the whole display flickers or scrambles, check the display driver
Driver troubleshooting is more relevant when display problems extend beyond the game—for example, if the whole screen flickers or scrambles. Microsoft suggests checking whether Task Manager flickers too: that can help distinguish a display-driver issue from an incompatible app. Depending on what changed and when, Microsoft lists updating, rolling back, or reinstalling the display driver as options to investigate (Microsoft: Troubleshoot screen flickering in Windows). Follow that guidance for the symptoms you actually see rather than removing drivers as a routine response to in-game stutter.
Contact the game’s support team with a useful report
If the game still fails, send its publisher or support team the details you recorded: the game and edition, storefront, Windows version, CPU, GPU and RAM, exact error, when the issue occurs, and steps that reliably reproduce it. Include the checks you have already tried and what changed. Steam’s general guidance cannot identify the cause for an unnamed game on an unknown PC, so unresolved problems need game-specific support (Steam: Games fail to launch).
