Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor smoother horror games on PC, first identify whether the problem is low frame rate, uneven frame delivery, shader-compilation stutter, screen tearing, or slow loading. Then adjust one setting at a time and replay the same scene. Start with resolution and demanding visual effects if the GPU appears to be the limit; use Windows and display options only when your game and hardware support them.
Diagnose the kind of slowdown before changing settings
“Smoother” can describe several different problems, and they do not all respond to the same fix. A consistently low frame rate, brief hitches, visible tearing, and long loading times have different causes.

- Low or fluctuating frame rate: The game is not rendering frames quickly or consistently enough. A built-in performance display or trusted monitoring tool can help you observe frame rate and, where available, frame-time consistency.
- Brief hitches: Note whether they happen during particular effects, when entering an area, or the first time an effect appears. Shader compilation is one possible cause; a graphics setting change may not resolve it.
- Screen tearing: The image appears split during motion. This is a display-presentation issue, not proof that the PC needs more rendering power.
- Slow loading: Waiting for a level or area to load is distinct from poor motion during gameplay. Lowering visual effects may not help.
Before tuning, record the current resolution and graphics settings. If you can, note performance in a repeatable scene or along the same route. Change one setting at a time and compare under similar conditions; otherwise, it is difficult to tell which change helped.

Which settings should you change first?
Use the game’s graphics menu as your main tuning surface. The cost and exact names of settings vary by game, graphics card, and driver, so treat the following as a sequence of experiments rather than guaranteed fixes. Microsoft’s developer guidance explains that high resolution and pixel-shader demand can contribute to GPU limits, and that hardware differences affect game defaults: Microsoft’s graphics performance-tuning guidance.

- Test a lower render resolution. Reduce it one step, then replay the same scene. If performance improves, that is evidence the graphics workload may be GPU-limited. The trade-off is a softer image, especially if the game does not scale cleanly to your display.
- Reduce demanding visual effects incrementally. Try lowering the most intensive effects available in the game, one at a time. Compare performance and image quality after each change; a setting’s cost is game- and hardware-dependent.
- Keep the changes that address your symptom. If lowering resolution or effects does not change the problem, restore settings you do not want to sacrifice and investigate another cause rather than lowering everything at once.
These checks can point toward a GPU limit, but they do not by themselves identify a particular graphics card upgrade. Make that decision only after measurements indicate the graphics workload is the constraint.
Use Windows 11 windowed-game optimizations only when they fit
Windows 11 has a per-game option called Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft says it can move compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless into a newer presentation model, reducing presentation latency or enabling related modern display features. It is not a universal performance switch: the game’s graphics API and display mode matter.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics in Windows 11.
- Select the game in the app list. If it is not listed, add its executable using the available browse option.
- Open the game’s options and look for Optimizations for windowed games, then apply the setting if it is available.
- Launch the game in windowed or borderless mode and compare the same scene. If the option is absent or the game does not meet the compatibility conditions, this setting is not applicable.
See Microsoft’s Windows 11 windowed-game optimization instructions and its DirectX graphics and gaming updates for details.

Understand what variable refresh rate can—and cannot—do
Variable refresh rate (VRR) helps compatible displays adjust their refresh behavior to the graphics card’s frame output, which can make motion appear smoother and reduce tearing in supported setups. Microsoft identifies FreeSync, G-SYNC, and VESA Adaptive-Sync displays among VRR options. The game, graphics card, driver, monitor, and connection all need to support the relevant feature.
VRR is a presentation feature: it does not make the PC render more frames. It therefore addresses a different problem from lowering resolution or effects to reduce graphics workload. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 refresh-rate guidance and your monitor and GPU documentation to confirm compatibility.
Do not clear shader caches as a routine performance fix
Games and graphics drivers can store compiled shaders so they can be reused on later runs. NVIDIA documents its shader cache, and AMD describes storing frequently used shaders. Clearing a cache removes stored work; it is not a general remedy for stutter and can mean shaders need to be compiled again. Consider it only when troubleshooting a specific suspected cache problem, not as a first step. See the vendor documentation for NVIDIA shader cache and AMD shader caching.

Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery is a Windows 11 Direct3D 12 technology intended to help supported games load faster. It is not a switch guaranteed to be available for every title or game store. Its availability depends on support; it should not be treated as a setting you can enable universally. Microsoft describes it in its Advanced Shader Delivery overview.

Windows Game Mode
Game Mode is intended to prioritize gaming tasks. You can check it under Settings > Gaming > Game Mode in Windows. Its presence does not establish that it will produce a particular frame-rate improvement on your PC, so compare performance rather than assuming a gain. Microsoft explains the feature in its Game Mode support guidance.
Graphics-driver settings
Some driver software offers options such as frame-rate caps or shader caching. Use them only when they address the symptom you have identified—for example, a cap is relevant when you want to limit output, not when you need the PC to render more frames. AMD documents its driver options in its shader caching FAQ and graphics software documentation. Labels and availability vary by driver and hardware.

A practical comparison of the main options
| Option | What it may affect | Image or compatibility trade-off | When to try it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower render resolution | Can reduce GPU workload; may help reveal a GPU limit. | Image may look softer; effect depends on the game and display scaling. | When frame rate is low or unstable and graphics workload is a likely constraint. |
| Lower demanding effects | Can reduce graphics workload, depending on the effect and game. | Visual detail or atmosphere may be reduced; exact costs vary. | When you want to preserve resolution while testing GPU-heavy settings. |
| Optimizations for windowed games | May improve presentation latency or enable related display features. | Windows 11 option for compatible DirectX 10/11 games in windowed or borderless mode. | When the game and display mode meet those conditions. |
| VRR | Can improve perceived presentation smoothness and reduce tearing. | Requires support across the game, GPU, driver, monitor, and connection; does not increase rendered FPS. | When tearing or uneven presentation is the concern and the setup is compatible. |
| Shader cache | Can avoid recompiling cached shaders on later runs. | Behavior depends on the game and driver; clearing it can require recompilation. | Usually leave it alone unless diagnosing a specific cache issue. |
| Game Mode or driver-level controls | May affect task priority or frame output behavior. | Available behavior varies by Windows build, driver, and hardware; no universal gain is established. | As a secondary, measured test after checking the game’s own settings. |
Why there is no universal best setting for every horror game
Performance depends on the specific game, PC configuration, Windows version, driver, and display setup. A setting that is expensive in one game may be modest in another, and a stutter tied to shader compilation or loading may not respond to the same changes as a GPU-limited frame rate. No universal frame-rate gain or percentage improvement can be promised across unspecified games and hardware.
For a game-specific recommendation, the title and PC configuration matter: the relevant minimum and recommended specifications, graphics options, known issues, and patch history are different for each game. Treat current menu names and compatibility as subject to change with game, driver, and Windows updates.
