If a QR code scans but opens the wrong page, first check the URL shown in your phone camera’s preview and don’t enter information on a destination you can’t verify. The fix depends on what the code points to: replace a static code with the wrong embedded URL, update a dynamic code’s redirect if you control it, or repair the page or redirect at a URL on your own site.
Check the destination before opening it
A successful scan only means the phone read the QR pattern; it does not confirm that the destination is correct or safe. Read the URL in the camera preview and compare its spelling and domain with the organization or location you expected. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center advises checking that the URL is the intended site and looks authentic. The Federal Trade Commission also recommends checking for misspellings or switched letters.

- For a printed code, look for a sticker placed over the original or other signs that the code was altered.
- If the page requests credentials, payment details, or an unexpected app download, stop and verify through a website or phone number you already trust—not contact details on the questionable page.
- Use your phone’s built-in camera scanner rather than installing an unfamiliar QR-scanner app.
A wrong page could result from a typo, an outdated destination, a misconfigured redirect, or a substituted code. The scan itself does not tell you which cause applies.

Use the camera preview to note the first URL the code offers. If it is the actual web address you expected, the code may contain that address directly. If it is a short or managed URL, the code may instead lead through a redirect service. The key question is who controls the destination URL or redirect account.

With a static QR code, the destination is encoded in the pattern. Hovercode’s explanation of static and dynamic QR codes says a static destination cannot be changed after the code is created. A dashboard cannot rewrite the data already printed or displayed in that pattern.
A dynamic QR code encodes a redirect URL, and the person or organization controlling that redirect can change where it leads. A short URL is not proof that you own or can edit the redirect; confirm who manages its domain or account before attempting a change.

Choose the repair that matches the code
Static code contains the wrong address
Create a new QR code using the correct URL, then replace the old code wherever it appears—on a label, poster, document, or website. The existing static image cannot be edited into a different destination.

Sign in to the service or update the redirect on your server, then set the correct final destination. The QR pattern can remain in place because it still points to the redirect entry point; changing the destination depends on retaining access to the account or server that controls it.

The code points to a URL on your own website
If the page has moved, restore the expected content at the encoded address or configure a redirect from that address to the correct page. In either case, the old QR image can continue to work if its URL remains under your control.
Someone else controls the code or redirect
Ask the code’s owner or redirect administrator to correct the destination. Scanning the code does not let you change its encoded data or take control of a third party’s redirect.

The physical code appears covered or replaced
Do not use it. Tell the venue or organization responsible for the code so it can inspect the altered label and provide a verified alternative. The FBI/IC3 warns that scammers may place stickers over legitimate QR codes.
Test the corrected code
- Scan the code with your phone’s camera and inspect the URL preview before opening it.
- Confirm that the preview shows the expected domain or the redirect URL you intended.
- Open it only after the destination looks right, then check that the final page is the one you meant to reach.
If the preview remains wrong, check that you changed the redirect actually used by the printed code, or that you replaced every copy of a static code. If the preview is correct but the wrong page loads, inspect the destination page or the redirect configured at that URL.

Special case: GS1 Digital Link QR codes
A GS1 Digital Link URI identifies a product while the location of related information can be managed separately. GS1 describes redirects as a way to connect that identifier to content; its advice applies to the GS1 Digital Link system, not automatically to every QR code. In GS1’s 2024 guidance on redirection from scan to content, it recommends a temporary HTTP 303 redirect when a destination is expected to change. GS1 also notes that redirect platforms can impose limits, including on cross-domain redirects.
Set up a replacement code you can maintain
If you are creating a new code and may need to change its destination later, choose between a direct static code and a redirect-based setup. A static code has fewer moving parts but a fixed destination; a dynamic code lets its redirect owner change the final page, but adds a dependency on that owner’s account, domain, or service.
- Confirm who controls the redirect domain and account.
- Check whether the redirect can point to the destination domain you need.
- Consider what happens if the provider or account becomes unavailable.
- Keep a way to test and recover the destination, and retain access to the redirect settings.
If you already entered information on a suspicious page
If you entered a password on a suspected fake page, change it promptly anywhere you reused it. Review financial transactions if you entered payment information, and contact the relevant organization using independently verified details.
