The current matchup is the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max. Neither is a universal camera winner: Tom’s Guide found stronger results for the iPhone in some low-light and video examples, while the Galaxy produced the sharper image in its 40x zoom comparison. Choose based on what you shoot most—and treat those results as specific review samples, not a promise about every scene or software version.
How the cameras compare
Published comparisons point to different strengths rather than a single all-purpose winner. Tom’s Guide tested both current-generation phones in individual scenes and a 4K/30 HDR video comparison. PhoneArena’s September 24, 2026 sample gallery provides side-by-side examples organized by main camera, portraits, zoom, ultra-wide, and selfie. Results depend on the scene, framing, and each publication’s test conditions.

| Use | What the comparisons show |
|---|---|
| Main camera in daylight | PhoneArena provides main-camera samples, but the cited material does not establish a consistent winner across daylight scenes. Compare the sample set for the light and subject you care about. PhoneArena |
| Low light | In Tom’s Guide’s near-dark flag example, the reviewer saw more detail in the iPhone image and described the Galaxy image as blurry. In an indoor Halloween-decorations example, the iPhone had a slight sharpness edge, while the Galaxy rendered more saturated colors. These are two specific scenes, not a blanket low-light ranking. Tom’s Guide |
| Portraits | PhoneArena’s gallery includes portrait samples, but the cited observations do not identify an overall portrait winner. Compare subject separation and skin rendering in its examples. PhoneArena |
| Ultra-wide | PhoneArena includes ultra-wide samples; the cited comparison does not establish a universal advantage for either phone. PhoneArena |
| Moderate zoom | In Tom’s Guide’s pumpkin comparison at 10x, the reviewer described the phones as neck and neck. Tom’s Guide |
| Very long zoom | At 40x in the same comparison, the iPhone struggled and the Galaxy image was sharper. This test supports the Galaxy when reaching a distant subject matters; it does not establish equal quality at every zoom level. Tom’s Guide |
| Video | In one 4K/30 HDR comparison, Tom’s Guide preferred the iPhone’s detail and smoother zooming, while noting the Galaxy could zoom in more when framing very close. Tom’s Guide |
What the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s zoom labels mean
Samsung’s 2026 specifications list four rear cameras: a 50 MP ultra-wide at F1.9, a 200 MP wide camera at F1.4, a 50 MP telephoto at F2.9, and a 10 MP telephoto at F2.4. The telephoto cameras provide 5x and 3x optical zoom, respectively. Samsung also labels 2x and 10x as “optical-quality zoom,” enabled by the Adaptive Pixel sensor—not as additional dedicated optical lenses. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra specifications and Samsung Newsroom.
That distinction matters if you are comparing reach: a 10x optical-quality setting is not the same thing as a 10x optical telephoto camera. Nor does a zoom number alone tell you how much usable detail a particular phone will retain in a specific scene.

What to know about the iPhone specifications
Apple’s accessible technical specification page describes the iPhone 17 Pro Max, not the current iPhone 18 Pro Max. It lists three 48 MP rear cameras—a 24 mm main camera at ƒ/1.78, a 13 mm ultra-wide at ƒ/2.2, and a 100 mm 4x telephoto at ƒ/2.8—plus 8x optical-quality zoom and up to 40x digital zoom. These figures are useful only as prior-generation context, not as specifications for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max technical specifications.
For the current iPhone, Tom’s Guide reports that its main camera’s variable aperture can open to f/1.48 or stop down to f/4.0, and that the reviewer found this useful for changing light and depth-of-field behavior. That is a reviewer-reported detail, not a complete current-generation specification sheet. Tom’s Guide’s comparison.

Which phone should you choose?
Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if
- The cited near-dark and indoor examples resemble the low-light scenes you shoot, and you prefer the iPhone’s observed detail and rendering in those samples.
- You record video and value the smoother zooming and detail Tom’s Guide preferred in its 4K/30 HDR comparison.
- You prefer the more restrained color in the cited indoor example to the Galaxy’s more saturated rendering.
Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if
- Very long-range framing is a priority: its sample was sharper than the iPhone’s at 40x in Tom’s Guide’s comparison.
- You want the flexibility of separate 3x and 5x optical telephoto cameras plus Samsung’s 2x and 10x optical-quality settings.
- You prefer the stronger saturation observed in the cited indoor scene.
When the samples do not settle it
For daylight, portraits, and ultra-wide shots, the cited findings do not establish a dependable winner. Review PhoneArena’s side-by-side examples for those categories, then consider how each phone’s color, exposure, and portrait treatment look to you. If the rendering is decisive, compare the sample files on the display you normally use. Your existing iOS or Android workflow is also a practical buying consideration, but it is separate from image quality.

The Galaxy’s 200 MP main camera and the 48 MP cameras listed for the previous-generation iPhone are hardware specifications, not independent quality scores. In the cited current-generation examples, the result changed with the scene: the iPhone showed more detail in one near-dark image, while the Galaxy was sharper at 40x. Color, exposure, focus, processing, and the amount of zoom all affect the image a person sees; comparing only megapixel counts cannot answer which camera is better for your use.
