Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA PS5 that will not read a disc usually has a simple cause: the disc is upside down, dirty or damaged, or the console’s software database needs rebuilding. Start with the physical checks, test more than one compatible disc, then use Safe Mode. If installation fails after the disc is recognized, treat storage and installation location as a separate problem. A stuck disc requires the manual-eject procedure, not force. When several known-good discs still fail, use PlayStation Repairs; only consider a replacement drive after confirming your exact PS5 model.
First, identify which problem you have
“The PS5 is not reading my disc” and “the PS5 will not install my game” are related but different faults. Reading happens when the console identifies the disc. Installation happens afterward, when game data is copied to storage. Use the symptom table to choose the shortest safe path.

| What you see | Most useful first check | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| The console does not show a game or movie icon | Check disc orientation, clean the disc and try another commercial disc | A single failure points toward that disc; several failures point toward the console or drive |
| The disc is recognized, but copying or installation stops | Confirm the destination is the PS5 console and check free storage | The optical drive may be working; the problem can be storage or installation configuration |
| The disc will not eject | Shut down, unplug everything and use the manual-eject screw | Manual removal is safer than pulling the disc through the slot |
| Several known-good compatible discs fail | Run Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then retest | Persistent failure after software recovery warrants service evaluation |
Before touching the drive, shut the PS5 down completely rather than leaving it in Rest Mode. Disconnect power and other cables whenever a procedure tells you to handle the console or remove a cover.
Check the disc orientation on a vertical PS5
When the PS5 is standing vertically on its stand, insert the disc with the labeled side facing left. The label is the printed side; the shiny reading surface faces right. An incorrectly oriented disc can look exactly like a failed drive because the console cannot read the data layer.

Remove the disc, turn it to the correct orientation and insert it again. During troubleshooting, reinsert the disc after each completed step so you know which change affected the result. Do not push a disc that is already partway inside, and do not put a second disc into the drive.
Inspect and clean the disc before blaming the PS5
Look for damage
Hold the disc by its outer edge or center hole and check it under a light. Fingerprints, dust, cracks and deep scratches can prevent a clean read. Do not use a visibly cracked or badly scratched disc as your diagnostic reference; a damaged disc cannot tell you whether the console is healthy.
Use the correct wiping direction
Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth intended for Blu-ray or DVD media. Wipe from the center hole straight toward the outer edge. Do not rub in a circular path around the disc, and avoid adding fingerprints while cleaning. A dry, gentle wipe is the appropriate first action; this is a cleaning step, not a guaranteed repair for a worn optical mechanism.

Retest after cleaning
Insert the cleaned disc with the correct orientation. If the game appears, allow the console to read it fully before launching installation. If it still does not appear, move to cross-disc testing rather than repeatedly polishing the same disc.

- From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this device.
- This product is only for PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5 Pro Consoles
- Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs
- Internet connection is required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 Digital Edition Console upon setup.
Test several kinds of compatible media
Try a second commercial PS5 or PS4 game disc. If you have them available, also test a commercial Blu-ray movie and a DVD. Testing different discs separates a media-specific problem from a console-wide reading problem:
- If only one game fails while other commercial discs work, the failing game disc is the stronger suspect.
- If multiple known-good games fail, the fault is more likely in the console software or disc drive, although only PlayStation service can confirm a hardware diagnosis.
- If games fail but another supported video disc works, the result is still useful evidence, but it does not by itself prove that every game-reading function is healthy.
PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. A burned DVD, copied game, or audio CD is therefore not a valid diagnostic disc. Use commercially produced, undamaged media that the console supports.
Use Safe Mode to clear cache and rebuild the database
When orientation, cleaning and cross-disc tests do not solve the problem, Sony’s next software step is Safe Mode. The relevant option is Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. This can correct database or cached-data problems that interfere with recognizing installed content and discs without immediately erasing the console.
Enter Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 off completely. Do not begin with Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Keep holding it until you hear the second beep; the second beep occurs several seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable, then press the controller’s PS button when Safe Mode asks for input.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database and follow the on-screen prompts.
The console may take time to rebuild its database. Let the process finish instead of interrupting power. When the PS5 starts normally, insert the test disc again and check whether it is recognized.

When the reset option is appropriate
Sony lists Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as a later Safe Mode step, not the first response to a disc error. This operation deletes all information on the console. Back up anything you need before considering it, and use it only after the less destructive checks and database rebuild have failed. A full reset is not a substitute for service if the drive cannot read any known-good compatible disc afterward.
When the disc is recognized but the game will not install
A visible game icon proves that the console has read enough of the disc to identify it, but installation can still fail for reasons unrelated to the optical read. Treat this branch separately from a completely unreadable disc.
Confirm the installation destination
Check that the game is being installed to the PS5 console itself. Publisher support for PS5 and PS4 installation problems identifies the console destination as a required check. If the destination is set incorrectly, change it to the PS5 console storage and retry.

Check available storage
Open the PS5 storage screen and verify that enough free space is available for the installation. A disc can be perfectly readable while an installation stops because the destination does not have sufficient capacity. Free space may need to exceed the game’s displayed size while the system prepares files, so remove or move content only after confirming what the console reports as required.

Retry without changing several variables at once
After correcting the destination or freeing space, restart the installation with the same clean, correctly oriented disc. If the read icon disappears as well, return to the disc-cleaning and cross-disc sections. If the icon remains but copying repeatedly stops, record the point of failure and proceed to software recovery or service rather than repeatedly forcing the drive to retry.
Remove a stuck disc safely
Use the manual-eject procedure only when the PS5 cannot eject the disc normally. Sony’s safety instruction is explicit: “Do not forcibly pull the disc from the disc drive.” Pulling through the slot can damage the disc, rollers or internal mechanism.
Prepare the console
- Shut the PS5 down completely.
- Disconnect the AC power cable, HDMI cable, network cable, USB devices and any other connected accessories.
- Place the console on a soft, stable cloth so its exterior is protected while you work.
- Remove the stand if one is attached.
- Remove the appropriate PS5 cover panel to expose the manual-eject access point. Use the cover-removal method for your PS5 chassis; do not pry randomly or operate the console with the cover removed.
Turn the manual-eject screw
- Use a #1 Phillips (cross-head) screwdriver on the manual-eject screw.
- Turn the screw clockwise, slowly and steadily.
- Continue until the disc is almost completely visible.
- Lift the disc out gently by its edge. Stop if it catches; do not yank it or use force.
- Reinstall the cover and stand before reconnecting power. Do not operate or play the PS5 with the cover off.
If the screw turns but the disc does not move, or if the disc is damaged and cannot be removed without resistance, stop and use PlayStation Repairs. A manual-eject screw is intended to release a stuck disc, not to repair a failed drive.
Use the evidence to distinguish a disc problem from a drive problem
Keep a simple record of the discs you tested. Note whether each one is a commercial game, Blu-ray or DVD; whether it was clean and undamaged; and whether the PS5 displayed an icon. This prevents a scratched disc from being mistaken for proof of a console failure.

| Test pattern | Most reasonable interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| One disc fails; other commercial discs work | Disc-specific damage, contamination or incompatibility is more likely | Clean the disc, verify it is supported and test it in another compatible console if available |
| Games, Blu-ray and DVD all fail | Console software or the disc-drive hardware is more likely involved | Complete Safe Mode database recovery, then seek service if failures continue |
| Disc is recognized but installation stops | Storage destination or free-space issue remains possible | Check the PS5 console destination and available storage before concluding the drive is bad |
| Disc is physically stuck | The immediate problem is ejection, not necessarily reading | Use the powered-off manual-eject procedure |
These patterns guide troubleshooting; they are not a definitive hardware diagnosis. PlayStation Repairs is the appropriate escalation when several known-good compatible discs still fail after cleaning and Safe Mode recovery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to use PlayStation Repairs
Escalate after you have used the correct orientation, cleaned the media, tested multiple supported discs and completed Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Include the exact behavior in your service description: whether the drive accepts the disc, whether an icon appears, which media types were tested and whether installation or ejection is the failure point.
Service is especially appropriate when:
- Several known-good commercial games fail to appear.
- Both games and supported Blu-ray/DVD media fail after software recovery.
- The drive makes unusual mechanical attempts, repeatedly stops, or cannot eject a disc normally.
- The manual-eject screw does not release the disc without resistance.
Region, warranty status and repair pricing vary, so check the PlayStation Repairs options for your location before shipping or opening the console further. Do not assume that buying a replacement mechanism is cheaper or compatible simply because the connector appears similar.

Replacement disc-drive compatibility
Sony’s detachable replacement/add-on drive is not a universal upgrade for every PS5. Sony lists compatibility with the PS5 Pro and with PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim model groups. Verify the model number on your console before purchasing a drive. Original disc-equipped PS5 model groups are not made compatible merely by attaching this drive.
| Console | Drive compatibility stated by Sony | Important setup requirement |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Pro | Compatible with Sony’s detachable drive | Internet connection is required to pair the drive during setup |
| PS5 Digital Edition, CFI-2000 slim group | Compatible with Sony’s detachable drive | Internet connection is required to pair the drive during setup |
| PS5 Digital Edition, CFI-2100 slim group | Compatible with Sony’s detachable drive | Internet connection is required to pair the drive during setup |
| Other or unknown model | Not established by the stated compatibility list | Confirm the model with Sony before buying or installing anything |
Pairing requires an internet connection during setup, even though the drive is a physical accessory. Plan for that requirement before removing panels or beginning installation. If your model is not one of the listed groups, service is the safer route than experimenting with an incompatible drive.
A compact troubleshooting checklist
- Shut down fully before handling the console.
- For a vertical PS5, insert the labeled side facing left.
- Clean the disc from center to edge with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Test another commercial game, then a Blu-ray or DVD if available.
- Remember that burned discs and audio CDs are unsupported.
- Run Safe Mode: Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- If the disc is recognized but installation fails, verify the PS5 console destination and free storage.
- For a stuck disc, unplug everything, remove the cover and turn the manual-eject screw clockwise with a #1 Phillips screwdriver; never force the disc.
- Use PlayStation Repairs after multiple known-good discs fail these checks.
- For a replacement drive, verify PS5 Pro or CFI-2000/2100 slim compatibility and plan for internet pairing.
What not to do
- Do not insert a disc with the label facing the wrong direction and assume the drive is dead after one attempt.
- Do not use a cracked or badly scratched disc to diagnose the console.
- Do not wipe around the disc in circles or handle the reading surface unnecessarily.
- Do not reset the PS5 before trying database recovery and backing up your data; reinstalling system software deletes console information.
- Do not pull a stuck disc from the slot or operate the console with its cover removed.
- Do not order a detachable drive without checking the CFI model group.
Bottom line
Start with orientation, cleaning and cross-disc testing. Then rebuild the database in Safe Mode. If the disc is recognized but installation fails, check the PS5 console destination and available storage rather than replacing the drive immediately. Use the powered-off manual-eject procedure for a stuck disc, never force it, and send the console to PlayStation Repairs when several known-good compatible discs still fail. A detachable replacement drive is a model-specific option for PS5 Pro and CFI-2000/2100 PS5 Digital Edition slim groups and must be paired online during setup.
