Use this decision path before changing anything
Keep the first attempt reversible. Do not format the Vita, delete every tai folder or remove custom firmware simply because one dashboard fails. Follow this order:
- Power off completely. Do not rely on sleep mode.
- Hold L during power-on to disable taiHEN plugin loading for that boot.
- Test the dashboard or affected bubble. Note whether the Vita reaches the LiveArea normally, whether only one application fails and whether the problem changes with plugins suppressed.
- Record the exact error in Settings > System > Error History before reinstalling software, rebuilding the database or editing configuration.

First, classify what “will not launch” means
Black screen or failure to reach the system
A black screen immediately after installing or changing a plugin points to taiHEN loading rather than to a deleted dashboard. Hold L at power-on. If the Vita boots only with that key held, plugin isolation has changed the result and the active configuration deserves inspection.
The bubble is missing after a storage change
If homebrew bubbles disappeared after inserting an SD2Vita adapter, changing a microSD card or switching another storage device, treat the problem as a mount or volume issue first. The application may still exist on a volume that is no longer mounted as ux0:. This is different from an executable that is present but crashes.
HENkaku or HENlo will not activate
A browser exploit that fails to activate is not the same as a dashboard that used to launch and now crashes. Browser recovery involves network, JavaScript, cookies and history; it does not repair a malformed taiHEN plugin entry.

Adrenaline modifies the official PSP emulator through the taiHEN CFW framework. Its kernel module and installation sequence are specific to that project and should not be applied to another dashboard.
The Vita never completes boot
If the Vita still cannot boot with plugins suppressed, stop installing packages or experimenting with configuration. The documented troubleshooting path treats a persistent failure as a possible boot loop or brick and directs users to a dedicated boot-loop procedure or qualified help.
Capture the error before editing files
Sony’s PlayStation Vita User’s Guide documents Settings > System > Error History. The system keeps the most recent 10 errors, including examples such as download failures and failed Internet connections. Selecting an entry may show details that help identify the cause (Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2021).
Write down the error code, the application name and when the failure occurs. If the Vita boots only with L held, make the record in that mode. Keep screenshots or a handwritten copy before you reinstall a VPK, rebuild the database, remove a plugin or change storage. An exact code can distinguish a storage problem from a permission issue, an exploit failure, a plugin conflict or an application-specific fault.

Black screen after a plugin or configuration change
1. Boot with taiHEN plugins suppressed
Fully power off the Vita. Hold L, then press the power button and keep the key held through startup. The purpose is diagnostic: taiHEN does not load its plugins for that boot, so a conflicting kernel or user plugin cannot interfere in the usual way.
2. Confirm the result
If the LiveArea appears and the custom dashboard launches, the timing strongly implicates a recently added or modified plugin or configuration line. Test only the affected dashboard first; do not add another plugin while troubleshooting.
3. Find the active tai configuration
Vita installations can use a tai configuration on ux0: or ur0:. Determine which location is active before editing. The Vita Hacks Guide specifically describes editing ux0:tai/config.txt and removing plugins recently added when the device boots after holding L. If your active setup is on ur0:, apply the same reasoning to that active file rather than editing an unused copy.
4. Back up, then undo the newest change
Copy the active config.txt to a safe location before changing it. Remove or restore the newest plugin line, path or section one change at a time. Preserve the rest of the file; deleting every entry makes it harder to identify the conflict and can remove unrelated functionality. Reboot normally after saving and test the dashboard.

Return to the known-good backup and stop adding homebrew packages. A Vita that cannot boot even with plugin loading suppressed may need the platform’s dedicated boot-loop recovery procedure. Repeated random edits can turn a recoverable configuration problem into data loss.
When homebrew bubbles disappear after SD2Vita or another storage change
Check the mount before reinstalling applications
Verify that the intended ux0: volume is present and that the storage plugin or adapter is mounted as expected. A missing volume can make installed bubbles appear to vanish even though their files remain on the card. Check whether the problem began immediately after inserting an SD2Vita adapter, replacing its microSD card, changing a USB storage setup or altering storage-plugin settings.
Use the accessory only when the symptom fits
The setup documentation discusses alternative storage with a microSD card or USB drive. An SD2Vita adapter and compatible microSD card are therefore relevant physical components when the failure follows a storage change, failed mount or missing volume. They are not universal repair tools: new storage cannot fix a malformed taiHEN configuration, an incompatible plugin or damaged system software.

Separate a mount problem from an application problem
- If multiple bubbles disappear together after storage changes, investigate the mount and the assigned
ux0:volume first. - If the Vita sees other bubbles but one dashboard crashes, keep storage mounted and return to plugin or application-specific diagnosis.
- If the card or adapter is intermittently detected, power down before reseating hardware and avoid repeated writes until important data is backed up.
Do not format the card merely because bubbles are absent. Formatting destroys evidence and may remove the files you need to recover.
When the temporary exploit will not activate
Use this branch only when HENkaku or HENlo itself is not active. The browser-exploit guidance describes these exploits as potentially unstable and recommends a clean retry:
- Verify a stable network connection.
- Make sure JavaScript is enabled in the Vita browser.
- Delete browser cookies and search history.
- Reboot the Vita.
- Wait briefly after startup, then retry the activation page.
Once taiHEN is active and the Vita reaches the LiveArea, do not keep repeating browser cleanup for a dashboard that launches once and then stops. That symptom belongs to plugin, storage or application troubleshooting instead.
Repairing an Adrenaline installation specifically
Adrenaline is a special case because it modifies the official PSP emulator through taiHEN. Use its documented clean-install sequence only when Adrenaline is the failing dashboard:
- Remove the Adrenaline bubble.
- Remove the line for
ux0:app/PSPEMUCFW/sce_module/adrenaline_kernel.skprxfrom the activetai/config.txt. - Reboot the Vita.
- Install
Adrenaline.vpkthrough VitaShell. - Launch Adrenaline and press X when prompted to download the PSP 6.61 firmware.
- Relaunch Adrenaline after the firmware download completes.
Do not remove that kernel-module line from an unrelated dashboard’s configuration as a general fix. If another application is failing, return to the plugin-isolation and storage branches instead.
What to do when the Vita is stuck in a boot loop
A device that remains unusable after the L-held boot should be treated as a possible boot loop or brick, not as an invitation to install more packages. Stop advanced homebrew changes, preserve any configuration backup and note the last successful change. The current Vita Hacks Guide advises seeking help with a detailed description of the problem and everything already tried when the issue cannot be solved.
Include the following in a support request:
- Whether the Vita reaches the LiveArea with L held.
- The last plugin, storage change or application installation.
- The active configuration location,
ux0:orur0:. - The exact Error History code and application name.
- Whether the screen is black, frozen on a logo, repeatedly restarting or showing a recovery prompt.
This information is more useful than a general statement that the Vita is “hacked” or “broken,” and it reduces the risk of someone recommending an irreversible step that does not match the symptom.

Reset only a customized start-screen image
If the Vita boots normally and the only defect is the customized start-screen picture, Sony documents a narrow visual reset: open Settings > Format > Restore Start Screen Image. This restores the start-screen image to the default image (Sony Computer Entertainment, 2014).
That option does not restore a missing bubble, repair a failed executable, remount ux0:, resolve a plugin conflict or fix a custom-firmware installation. Use it only when the problem is limited to the image.

Removing HENkaku Ensō completely removes the custom firmware and its plugins. The uninstallation guidance also warns that VPK and PKG titles installed with homebrew will not run on stock firmware, and that the process is irreversible if something goes wrong.
That makes CFW removal a deliberate return-to-stock decision, not a first-line troubleshooting step. Before considering it, back up personal data and configuration, identify the actual failure and accept that homebrew applications will become inaccessible on the resulting stock system. Updating to stock firmware can also eliminate the very tools needed to inspect or repair the installation.
Preserve evidence while you troubleshoot
Before each change, write down the Vita’s current state: whether it boots normally, whether holding L changes the result, which bubbles are visible, the active storage volume and the latest Error History entry. Note the exact plugin path or configuration line you touched. This simple log prevents cycling through the same failed experiment and gives a repair technician a usable timeline.
Make a copy of the active configuration before removing anything, and keep the copy separate from the Vita. Change one line or one storage setting at a time, then reboot and test. If a change makes the result worse, restore the known-good copy rather than layering another fix on top. Avoid formatting, database rebuilding or firmware removal until the symptom specifically justifies it; each can erase clues or reduce access to homebrew recovery tools.

Preventing the next failed launch
- Change one plugin or storage setting at a time, then reboot and test before making another change.
- Keep a dated backup of the active tai configuration before editing it.
- Record the exact file path and plugin line you changed, not just the plugin’s name.
- When moving storage, verify the intended
ux0:volume before assuming applications were deleted. - Keep the Error History code and application name with your notes.

Why did my Vita homebrew bubbles disappear after I inserted an SD2Vita?
Treat the symptom as a storage-mount problem first. Confirm that the intended ux0: volume is present and that the adapter, microSD card and storage plugin are mounted as expected. If only that application fails while storage is mounted and other bubbles work, keep the troubleshooting focused on its plugin or application configuration rather than buying new storage hardware.
What if HENkaku or HENlo will not activate at all?
Use the browser-specific recovery sequence: verify a stable network connection, enable JavaScript, delete cookies and search history, reboot, wait briefly and retry. Browser exploits can be unstable. This procedure is for activation failure; it is not the right response when taiHEN is already active and a dashboard launches once and then crashes.
How do I reinstall Adrenaline when it alone will not launch?
Use Adrenaline’s specific clean-install sequence. Remove its bubble and the ux0:app/PSPEMUCFW/sce_module/adrenaline_kernel.skprx line from the active tai/config.txt, reboot, install Adrenaline.vpk through VitaShell, launch it and press X to download the PSP 6.61 firmware. Relaunch after that download. Do not apply this kernel-module instruction to unrelated dashboards.
When should I ask for boot-loop help?
Ask for help when the Vita remains unusable even after the L-held boot, or when it repeatedly restarts, stays on a logo or shows a suspected brick. Provide the last successful change, whether L changes boot behavior, the active ux0: or ur0: configuration location, the exact Error History code and the visible symptom. Stop installing packages while the device’s state is uncertain.
