How to Fix a Portable SSD That Won’t Show Up on Windows or Mac

A portable SSD missing from File Explorer or Finder may still be detected by the operating system. Check the connection and disk utility first, and avoid initializing, erasing, or formatting a drive with files you need.

If a portable SSD is missing from File Explorer or Finder, first check whether Windows Disk Management or macOS Disk Utility can see it. A drive that appears in a disk utility but not in the file browser usually needs a different fix from one that is absent from the utility entirely. Before changing disk settings, decide whether the drive contains files you need: initializing, erasing, or formatting can destroy access to them.

Start with the safest checks

Rule out a connection problem before changing disk settings. These checks do not prove the SSD is healthy; they help determine whether the port, cable, or computer is involved.

  1. Disconnect the SSD, then connect it directly to the computer rather than through a hub or dock.
  2. Try another suitable port and reconnect the drive firmly.
  3. Try a known-good data cable that supports the SSD’s requirements. A USB-C plug shape alone does not guarantee the cable supports the features the device needs. Microsoft also notes that a USB device may not receive enough power from a PC. See Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance.
  4. If possible, test the SSD on another computer. Whether it works there helps distinguish a problem with the original computer from one involving the SSD, its enclosure, or its connection.

Check whether Windows detects the SSD

Open Disk Management by searching Windows for Create and format hard disk partitions, or press Windows+R, enter diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. Identify the external disk carefully before making changes. Microsoft’s Disk Management guide explains Windows disk and volume states.

The disk is Offline

If Disk Management labels the external disk Offline, use its Online action. Then check whether the volume appears in File Explorer.

A healthy volume has no drive letter

If the partition is present and healthy but has no drive letter, assign it a letter in Disk Management. A volume without a letter may not appear in File Explorer even though Windows detects it. Do not change or remove letters for other disks while troubleshooting.

The disk is RAW, Unallocated, Not Initialized, or Unreadable

These labels do not establish that the drive is empty or that formatting is safe. If it may contain files you want, do not initialize, create a new volume, or format it. Microsoft warns that initializing an in-use disk erases data, and states: “Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition.” See Microsoft’s guidance on initializing new disks and Disk Management in Windows.

The external disk is not listed

In Disk Management, select Action > Rescan Disks. If it remains absent, disconnect and reconnect it, try a direct USB port and another suitable cable, check Device Manager, and test another PC. Microsoft outlines these checks in Troubleshoot Disk Management.

Check whether macOS detects the SSD

Open Disk Utility from Applications > Utilities. Choose View > Show All Devices so the sidebar can show physical storage devices as well as their volumes. Apple’s Disk Utility repair instructions describe this view and the checks below.

The device appears in Disk Utility

If the SSD or one of its volumes appears, Apple’s First Aid workflow starts with the last volume in the device hierarchy. Run First Aid on that volume, then move upward through its volume group or container and finally the physical device, as applicable. If First Aid cannot repair errors, consider the importance of the files and recovery options before attempting any erase.

The device does not appear in Disk Utility

Check the cable, connections, and power. Shut down the Mac, disconnect nonessential devices, then reconnect the SSD and check Disk Utility again. Apple says that if the storage device still does not appear in Disk Utility’s sidebar, the Mac or the storage device may need service.

When is it safe to initialize or format?

Only proceed if the SSD is new and empty, or if its contents are backed up and intentionally disposable. On Windows, creating a usable volume on an empty disk may involve initializing it, creating a partition, and formatting the volume. Initialization and formatting are not visibility fixes for a disk with wanted files.

For a new Windows disk, Microsoft recommends GPT for modern systems that need UEFI, support for large drives, or more than four partitions. Older hardware or operating systems without UEFI may require MBR. Do not choose a filesystem for Windows-and-Mac sharing solely from this troubleshooting guide; the right choice depends on the devices and uses involved.

Decide whether to keep troubleshooting or seek help

  • It works on another computer: Focus on the original computer’s port, USB configuration, or disk-utility state.
  • It fails on multiple computers with a known-good cable and direct connection: The SSD, its enclosure or controller, or its connector may need manufacturer service. This is a troubleshooting inference, not a remote diagnosis.
  • Important files are inaccessible: Stop before destructive repair attempts and contact the drive maker or a professional data-recovery service. Microsoft identifies a recovery lab as a possible option when files on a failing disk are vitally important.

Use the device’s visibility, volume status, data-preservation needs, cable and port suitability, and result on a second computer to choose the next step. A missing file-browser entry alone does not show whether the physical SSD has failed.
