Secure your email and financial accounts first, turn on multifactor authentication (MFA), then replace password reuse with unique passwords saved in a password manager or browser. Reusing a password does not mean an account has been breached, but it gives attackers a chance to try an exposed password on other services.
Change every account that shares the password
Start with the shopping site, then change the password anywhere else you used that exact password or a similar variation. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) specifically advises changing it on other services if you reused the same or a similar password: FTC guidance on creating strong passwords.

Give each account a different password. Changing only a few characters in a reused password is not a reliable fix: a similar version may still be guessed or tried by someone who has obtained the original. Attackers can use credentials exposed at one service to attempt sign-ins elsewhere, a tactic often called credential stuffing.

Prioritize accounts that could help someone take over other accounts or cause immediate financial or personal harm. In particular, protect your email early: password-reset links often arrive in your inbox, so someone with inbox access may be able to reset passwords elsewhere.

The FTC recommends starting with sensitive accounts and then adding MFA to shopping accounts. The exact settings and supported options vary by service.
Turn on MFA and choose the strongest option available
MFA requires a second proof of identity in addition to your password. It can help prevent a sign-in with a stolen password alone, but the options differ in how they work and what risks they carry.

| Method | What to know | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Security key | A physical second factor. The FTC calls security keys the strongest two-factor method because they do not use credentials hackers can steal. A FIDO security key is one example of this product category; check that the service and your devices support it. | Choose it when the service supports it and you can keep the key accessible for sign-in and recovery. |
| Authenticator app | Generates sign-in codes on a device. Unlike SMS, it does not depend on your phone number and is not exposed to SIM-swap attacks in the same way. You still need to protect access to the device and plan for recovery. | Prefer it over SMS or email codes when a security key is unavailable and the service offers an authenticator app. |
| SMS or email code | Text codes can be exposed through phone-number takeover, while email codes depend on the security of your inbox. The FTC says a text or email code is better than no second factor when it is the only option. | Enable the offered code rather than leaving MFA off; secure the phone number or email account used to receive it. |
Not every account supports every method. For FTC guidance on enabling and comparing options, see Use Two-Factor Authentication To Protect Your Accounts. CISA also explains why adding a second factor matters in More than a Password.
Make unique passwords manageable
A password manager or your browser’s password generator can create and save a different password for each service, so you do not have to memorize them all. Choose a long, unique master passphrase for the manager and turn on MFA if the service supports it.

The password manager becomes an important account to protect: if its vault’s master secret is compromised, you may need to replace the passwords stored in that vault. NIST discusses password-manager risks and use in its Digital Identity Guidelines FAQ. Avoid saving a new password by reusing an old one or by making a predictable variation.

Password reuse alone does not establish that anyone accessed your accounts. If you see unfamiliar activity, cannot sign in, or receive a breach notice, use the affected service’s official recovery process rather than links in unexpected messages. Change the password from a trusted device, secure the associated email account, and review account details and activity for changes you did not make. If you receive a breach notification, the FTC advises changing that password right away.
