A stuck Pokémon download on Nintendo Switch is usually caused by a network connection, insufficient storage, an active game holding the download queue, outdated system software, or an account and virtual-game-card mismatch. Work through the checks below in order: they begin with non-destructive connection and queue fixes, then move to storage, system, and ownership checks.
These steps apply to Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, and Switch 2. They cover a new digital download, an update for an installed game, and a game-card update. Installation should begin automatically after the download finishes; if the progress indicator still does not move after every applicable check, record the exact error and contact Nintendo Support.

First, identify what is actually stuck
The word “installation” can describe several different states. A download may be transferring data, an update may be waiting in the queue, or the console may have finished transferring data and be preparing the automatic installation. The correct fix depends on the symptom.

A bar that moves intermittently is not necessarily frozen. Nintendo does not publish a universal Pokémon download time or a success-rate statistic for these situations, so judge progress by whether the indicator changes rather than by an assumed number of minutes.

Before changing anything
Confirm the console and software type
Note whether you are using a standard Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, or Switch 2. Also determine whether Pokémon is a digital purchase or a physical game card that is requesting an update. A digital download depends on the Nintendo Account that owns or registered it. A game-card update downloads separately from the card itself, so removing and reinserting the card is not a substitute for the network and storage checks below.
Protect the current save
Connection tests, restarting, closing the game, and sleep mode are non-destructive. Deleting software is different: it removes the installed program data and requires a later redownload. Do not delete the title until you have checked available space, account ownership, and the error message. Deleting the software is not the same as deleting its save data, but using the wrong account or losing access to the purchase can prevent an immediate redownload.
1. Test the internet connection
Nintendo requires an internet environment to download software. If the wireless connection is unstable, the transfer can stop, retry, or display a connection error even when other devices appear to be online.
Run the built-in connection test
- From HOME, open System Settings.
- Select Internet.
- Choose Test Connection and wait for the result.
- If the test fails, reconnect to your wireless network in the Internet settings and run the test again.
Retry the Pokémon download only after the console reports a usable connection. A successful test does not guarantee that every transfer will remain stable, but it separates a basic console connection problem from a storage or queue problem.
Restart both ends of the connection when needed
For a connection error, restart the Switch and your router, then try the download again. A restart can restore a connection when a system update or download cannot connect. Allow the router to finish starting before running the console test again.

Use a wired connection when compatible
A wired Ethernet connection is an available alternative on compatible Switch hardware. If you have the required Ethernet connection or adapter for your model, use it for the retry. This changes the network path; it does not bypass storage, account, or queue requirements.
2. Close Pokémon so it cannot hold the queue
Nintendo documents that eShop downloads can continue while the console is asleep or while a title without online-play functions is being played. Downloads stop while an online-play-capable title is being played, even if you are not actively using its online features. Pokémon can therefore make the transfer appear frozen simply by remaining open.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Press the HOME button to leave the game.
- Highlight the Pokémon icon on the HOME menu.
- Press the X button.
- Select Close, then confirm.
- Return to HOME and check the download notification or progress indicator.
Do not leave the game suspended while waiting for an online-capable download. Closing it gives the queue an unambiguous opportunity to continue.
3. Use sleep mode to let the transfer finish
Sleep mode is a supported automatic-download state. Put the Switch to sleep with the charger connected and a stable network. After the download completes, installation starts automatically.
- Close Pokémon completely using the HOME-menu procedure above.
- Connect the console to its charger.
- Press the POWER button briefly to enter sleep mode.
- Leave the console in a location where the network connection remains stable.
- Wake the console later and check whether the download and installation completed.
This is particularly useful when the transfer is progressing slowly or when you do not need to use the console. Sleep mode does not repair a failed connection or create storage; it simply lets an eligible transfer continue without an online-capable game running.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
4. Check free space before deleting anything
Switch software downloads require sufficient free space in system memory or on a microSD card. Update data may require additional capacity beyond the space occupied by the installed game. A transfer that stops near completion can therefore be a capacity problem even when the original game already fits.
Check both the location and the remaining capacity
- Open System Settings from HOME.
- Select Data Management.
- Review the available space in system memory and on the microSD card, if one is installed.
- Identify where the Pokémon software and its update are being stored.
If the console reports insufficient space, free capacity or add a compatible microSD card before retrying. The exact amount needed varies by title and update; the cited Nintendo guidance establishes the requirement for enough space, not a single universal Pokémon figure.
Free space without risking the save
Use Data Management to review installed software and decide what can be removed. Keep the Pokémon save data and do not delete the game merely because the bar appears slow. If you do remove software, verify the purchasing account and virtual-game-card state first so the redownload is available afterward.
5. Update the Switch system software
An outdated console system can interfere with downloading or installing current software. Nintendo’s system-update path is explicit:
- From HOME, open System Settings.
- Scroll to System.
- Select System Update.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and allow the update to complete.
If the system update cannot connect, restart the console and try the same path again. A system update itself needs an internet connection, so resolve any connection-test failure before repeating it.

6. Verify the Nintendo Account and virtual game card
Downloaded software is tied to the Nintendo Account and Nintendo’s virtual-game-card rules. This matters when a bundled game has never been registered, when a title was deleted, or when you are trying to download on another console.
For a bundled or newly registered download
The first registration of a bundled download requires a user linked to a Nintendo Account. Sign in with the account intended to own the software, then retry the registration or download from that user profile. A different local user may not have the ownership state required to start the transfer.
For software that was deleted
Redownload the title from the purchase history of the same Nintendo Account that obtained it. Check that the account is signed in and that the virtual game card is available to the console before starting the redownload. Starting from a different account can make a legitimate purchase appear to be missing.
For another console
On a second Switch-family console, confirm that the purchasing account and its virtual game card are available there. The account check is separate from the internet test: a console can be online and still lack the ownership state needed to download the title.

7. Choose the correct path for a game-card update
A physical Pokémon game card can launch the installed game while the console separately downloads an update. If that update is stuck, follow the same connection, queue, storage, sleep-mode, and system-update checks. Keep the card inserted while testing the update, and close the game before putting the console to sleep. Do not assume that reinstalling from the card will supply update data; the update still depends on internet access and free storage.

Decision paths for common messages and symptoms
“Unable to connect” or a network error
- Run System Settings > Internet > Test Connection.
- Restart the Switch and router.
- Retry the download with Pokémon closed.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection where your hardware supports it.
- If the console still cannot connect, record the exact message before contacting Nintendo Support.
“Not enough space” or a loop near 100 percent
- Open System Settings > Data Management.
- Check system memory and microSD capacity.
- Remember that update data can need additional room.
- Free storage or add a compatible microSD card.
- Retry with the game closed, then use sleep mode with the charger attached.
The download pauses every time Pokémon is open
- Press HOME.
- Highlight Pokémon, press X, and choose Close.
- Check the queue again.
- If it is still slow but moving, connect the charger and use sleep mode.
The title is missing after deletion
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account that purchased or registered the game.
- Check that the account’s virtual game card is available.
- Open that account’s purchase history and start the redownload.
- Confirm free space before allowing the transfer to begin.
The progress indicator does not change after every applicable check
Do not promise yourself that a particular Pokémon error has a universal fix. The available Nintendo guidance does not establish a Pokémon-specific outage or a single solution for every error code. Capture the exact displayed error, console model, storage location, and software type, then contact Nintendo Support with those details.
What to record before contacting Nintendo Support
Support can act more precisely when the report describes the state rather than saying only “the download is stuck.” Record:
- The exact error wording and error code, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Whether the console is a Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, or Switch 2.
- Whether Pokémon is digital or on a game card.
- Whether the problem is a first download, an update, or a redownload after deletion.
- Whether the software is stored in system memory or on a microSD card.
- Whether the internet test succeeded.
- Whether the game was closed and the console was tested in sleep mode with the charger connected.
- Whether the Nintendo Account that purchased or registered the software is signed in and has the virtual game card available.
These details distinguish a connection failure from a queue, capacity, or ownership problem and prevent you from repeating destructive steps without evidence.

Why these checks solve most stuck transfers
A download has to satisfy several independent conditions at once. The console must maintain an internet connection, the queue must be allowed to run, the destination must have enough capacity for both the software and its update data, the system software must be able to manage the transfer, and the Nintendo Account must have the right to download the title. A failure in any one of those conditions can look like the same unmoving progress bar.
That is why repeatedly pressing retry without changing the underlying condition rarely helps. The efficient order is to test the connection, remove the queue blocker, provide a stable sleep-mode environment, verify capacity, update the console, and then confirm ownership. Each step changes one variable while preserving the existing save and installation whenever possible.
Bottom line
Close Pokémon, test the internet connection, restart the console and router if necessary, check Data Management for enough system or microSD space, update the console, and use sleep mode with the charger attached. If the software was deleted or is missing on another console, use the purchasing Nintendo Account and verify its virtual game card. When the progress still does not move, stop deleting data and give Nintendo Support the exact error, console model, storage location, and digital-versus-game-card details.
