How to Fix a PC That Can’t Install Windows 11 Because of TPM or Secure Boot

A Windows 11 TPM or Secure Boot warning may mean a supported firmware feature is off—not necessarily that the PC is incompatible. Check TPM version, UEFI mode, and the complete eligibility result before changing settings.

If Windows 11 says your PC needs TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot, first find out whether the feature is supported but turned off. Check TPM status in Windows, then use your PC maker’s model-specific instructions to enable it in UEFI firmware. For Secure Boot, confirm the computer is using UEFI rather than Legacy/CSM mode before changing firmware settings. If the PC lacks the required capability—or fails a separate requirement such as processor eligibility—a toggle alone will not make it eligible.

What the warning means

Windows 11 requires a TPM that meets specification version 2.0 and UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable. These are separate from other minimum requirements, including an approved processor. A message such as “Compatible TPM cannot be found” does not by itself prove that the computer lacks a TPM: firmware may have it disabled. Likewise, a Secure Boot warning may reflect the current firmware configuration rather than a definitive lack of support.

Microsoft describes Secure Boot as “a security feature that helps prevent malicious software from loading when a Windows PC starts up.” For Windows 10 upgrade eligibility, Microsoft says the PC must be Secure Boot capable through UEFI; enabling Secure Boot is also recommended. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 and Secure Boot guidance and the Windows 11 system requirements.

Check TPM status in Windows

Use either of these checks before changing firmware settings:

  • Windows Security: Open Windows Security, select Device security, and look for Security processor. Open Security processor details and check that Specification version is 2.0.
  • TPM Management: Press Windows key + R, type tpm.msc, and press Enter. Check TPM Manufacturer Information for Specification Version.

If Windows reports that it cannot find a compatible TPM, or Device security has no Security processor section, the TPM could be disabled in firmware or the PC might not have the relevant TPM capability. Check your exact model’s manufacturer support information to distinguish those cases. Microsoft’s Enable TPM 2.0 on your PC page explains these checks and cautions: “If you are unfamiliar with this level of technical detail, we recommend that you consult your PC manufacturer’s support information for more instructions specific to your device.”

Enable TPM 2.0 using your PC maker’s instructions

TPM controls are in UEFI firmware, and their names and locations vary by manufacturer and model. Common labels include Intel PTT or Intel Platform Trust Technology on some Intel systems, and AMD fTPM, AMD PSP fTPM, or AMD fTPM switch on some AMD systems. Other firmware may use TPM State, Security Device, or Security Device Support. Do not assume that every PC uses the same label or menu.

  1. Find the support page or manual for the exact PC or motherboard model. Confirm the manufacturer’s recommended way to open firmware settings and identify the TPM option.
  2. If using Windows to open UEFI, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, or the Advanced startup recovery options in newer Windows versions. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings. Labels and availability vary by Windows version and device.
  3. In firmware, enable the model-appropriate TPM setting, save changes, and start Windows again. Follow the OEM’s directions if its menus or procedure differ.
  4. Repeat the Windows Security or tpm.msc check. Confirm that the reported TPM specification version is 2.0; the presence of a firmware toggle alone does not confirm that requirement is met.

Check UEFI mode before changing Secure Boot

Secure Boot depends on UEFI firmware. A PC configured to start using Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module (CSM) settings may need to be configured for UEFI before Secure Boot can be enabled. The exact controls vary, so consult the manufacturer’s instructions for the model and verify the current boot configuration before making changes.

Do not switch a system’s boot mode casually. Changing Legacy/CSM to UEFI without following the PC maker’s procedure can leave the existing Windows installation unable to start. If the manufacturer’s guidance does not clearly cover your configuration, contact its support service before changing boot settings. Microsoft’s Secure Boot guidance explains the UEFI and Legacy/CSM relationship; it does not prescribe one universal firmware menu path.

Tell a disabled feature from unsupported hardware

Use the PC’s exact model documentation alongside Windows’ compatibility result. The distinction determines whether a firmware adjustment can help:

Finding What it indicates Next step
TPM is not visible in Windows, but the model documentation identifies a TPM 2.0 firmware option The feature may be supported but disabled. A missing Windows entry alone does not establish that the PC lacks TPM. Follow the OEM’s instructions to enable it, then confirm the specification version in Windows.
The model documentation or manufacturer confirms that the required TPM or UEFI/Secure Boot capability is unavailable The PC does not meet that requirement through a firmware toggle. Check the manufacturer’s support and upgrade information for the exact model before considering hardware changes.
TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot capability are present, but Windows reports another compatibility failure A different minimum requirement, such as an approved processor, may be the blocker. Review the full Windows 11 compatibility result and the current system requirements.

A TPM module or replacement motherboard is not a general fix for this warning. Whether either is supported depends on the exact motherboard or PC, and the warning alone does not establish that a purchase is needed. For a work- or school-managed device, ask the IT administrator before changing firmware settings.

If the PC still does not meet Windows 11 requirements

Enabling TPM or Secure Boot does not override the approved-processor requirement or any other minimum specification. Check Microsoft’s current Windows 11 system requirements and the full compatibility result before concluding that installation will work. Microsoft says devices that do not meet the minimum requirements are unsupported and may have compatibility issues; a method that bypasses a check does not make an unsupported device eligible. See Microsoft’s guidance for devices that don’t meet minimum requirements.
