How to Fix a PC Game That Crashes or Stutters After Installation

A practical sequence for diagnosing a newly installed PC game that crashes, freezes, stutters, or triggers a Windows restart.

If a newly installed PC game crashes or stutters, first identify whether only the game is affected or Windows itself is failing. Then check the game’s update and official system requirements before changing drivers or Windows settings. Use reversible checks in order, and treat a Windows stop-code restart as a separate system problem—not simply a game crash.

1. Identify exactly what is failing

Before changing anything, note the game, your Windows version, any exact error message or stop code, and whether the problem began after a game, graphics-driver, or Windows update. The symptom and its scope narrow down the likely cause.

  • Crash to desktop: The game closes, but Windows remains usable.
  • Freeze: The game stops responding, either temporarily or until you close it.
  • Stutter: The game remains open, but motion or input becomes intermittently uneven.
  • Visual corruption: You see artifacts, flickering, or other unexpected graphics.
  • Windows restart or stop code: The whole PC restarts or displays a blue-screen error. Follow the system-level checks in section 7.

A failure limited to one game calls for a different investigation than several games failing or Windows restarting. Avoid assuming that every crash or stutter is caused by the graphics card.

2. Update the game and check its requirements

Install any available update from the game publisher or the platform where you installed it. Then compare your PC with the game’s official minimum and recommended system requirements. Requirements vary by title, so there is no universal GPU or memory threshold that can diagnose every newly installed game.

If just one game continues to fail while other demanding games work, concentrate on that title’s updates, requirements, installation files, and publisher support. Do not buy a component based only on the fact that this game crashes or stutters.

3. Check Windows and driver changes

If the problem started immediately after a Windows upgrade, check for a game update and try Microsoft’s Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Microsoft notes that app compatibility can be affected by changes to Windows architecture, security features, or system requirements.

If the display problem began after a graphics-driver update, an update or rollback may be relevant. Get drivers through the computer maker’s or graphics-device maker’s supported route; the correct source depends on your PC and adapter. Consider rolling back only when the timing points to a recent driver change. Avoid generic driver-updater apps.

4. Test for background software conflicts with a clean boot

A clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs, which can help identify background software conflicts affecting games. Microsoft provides the clean-boot procedure for Windows.

  1. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot steps carefully and record which services or startup items you disable.
  2. Restart Windows and test the affected game.
  3. If the problem disappears, re-enable disabled items systematically, testing again until you identify the conflict.
  4. Restore normal startup when you finish the test.

Advanced startup changes can temporarily reduce functionality. A clean boot is a diagnostic test, not a recommended permanent way to run Windows.

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, DirectX 11.3 and DirectX 12 are included with Windows, and updates arrive through Windows Update; there is no separate standalone package for those versions. Older games can have specific legacy-runtime needs. For example, an error naming d3dx9_35.dll points to a particular DirectX 9 compatibility case—not a reason to download an arbitrary bundle of runtime files. Check the exact message and use Microsoft’s documented route.

6. If the whole PC restarts, troubleshoot Windows

A Windows stop code or unexpected restart is a system-level issue that may involve hardware, a driver, or software. Follow Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting guidance rather than treating it as an ordinary game crash.

  • Check Device Manager for devices marked with an error, then update or disable a problematic device as appropriate.
  • Install available Windows updates.
  • Check available disk space. Microsoft gives 10%–15% free space as a general target for stop-code troubleshooting, while noting that the actual need varies by configuration. This is not a gaming requirement or a proven stutter fix.

7. Decide whether to broaden the investigation

Use the pattern of failures to choose the next step:

  • One game fails; other demanding games work: Focus on the failing title’s update, official requirements, installation files, and publisher support.
  • Several games fail: Investigate shared drivers and Windows errors, and consider appropriate hardware diagnostics.
  • Windows restarts or shows stop codes: Treat the problem as system-level and use the stop-code checks above.

Repair or component replacement is warranted only after a repeatable test or other evidence identifies a fault or limitation. A single game’s failure is not, by itself, proof that hardware needs replacing.
