Next, check for a system update and consult the game’s official update notes. These checks help narrow down the cause; they are not a guaranteed fix for every error.
1. Check whether the download is actually active
Open the HOME Menu and look at the affected game’s download status before changing settings or deleting software. Nintendo says download progress is visible there. If the update is progressing, let it finish; if it is paused or shows an error, note the displayed message or code before continuing. See Nintendo’s guidance on starting and closing software.

2. Confirm digital software is set up on this console
If the affected game is a digital purchase, check whether its virtual game card is set for this console and account. Nintendo’s Switch 2 download guidance notes that a virtual game card may need to be set before a download can start. This check applies to digital software; it will not resolve a physical game’s network or storage issue. Nintendo’s downloadable software and add-on guidance covers this setup.

On the console, open System Settings > Data Management and check available space. Compare it with the required storage listed on the game’s Nintendo software page or packaging. Nintendo notes that game-key-card software data is stored in system memory or a microSD Express card, and that sufficient free space is required. See Nintendo’s physical software guidance.

If space is the confirmed blocker, either free space in existing storage or use a compatible microSD Express card. A card can help with capacity; it cannot fix a network problem or virtual game card setup issue. Check compatibility and available capacity against the game’s stated requirement before choosing storage. Nintendo identifies microSD Express as a possible storage location in its software guidance.
4. Check for a console system update
Open System Settings > System > System Update and follow any update offered by the console. Nintendo’s system-update page gives this path for Nintendo Switch; the available information does not establish a Switch 2-specific version number, so use the version and instructions shown on your own console rather than assuming a number applies. 5. Look up the affected game’s update notes
Check Nintendo’s support page for the exact game. Game update pages can list the latest version and its release date, which helps distinguish a current update from title-specific instructions or a staged release. For example, Nintendo lists version 1.1.0 for Nintendo Switch 2 のひみつ展 dated September 10, 2026; that example is not the version for other games. Use the page for your title, such as this Nintendo game update listing.
6. If it still fails
Write down the game title, the exact error text or code, whether it is a digital purchase or game-key card, the console’s displayed system version, and what the download status shows. Contact Nintendo Support or the game’s official support channel with those details. Error meanings and procedures can vary by title and region; do not assume an error code has a universal interpretation.
