Say what generative AI contributed, where it contributed, and what you did with the result—and put that information where the audience, publisher, or platform needs to see it. There is no single disclosure rule for every creative work: legal duties depend on the content and jurisdiction, while platforms and publishers may set their own submission requirements. A clear, specific note is usually more useful than calling an entire work “AI-generated” or hiding substantial AI involvement behind “AI-assisted.”
What should an AI-use disclosure say?
Describe the contribution at the level that matters to the work. A useful adaptable pattern is: “I used [tool or model] to [specific task] in [part or element]. I reviewed and [edited, selected, or verified] the result.” Add the purpose when it helps explain the choice, and identify the model or version when relevant or required.

This pattern adapts guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for scientific products. The CDC’s fuller framework is “Content Affected + Action Taken + AI Tool + Purpose of AI Use + Human Oversight.” It is a useful checklist, not a universal creative-industry legal standard.
- Be specific: name the affected element, such as a background, lyric draft, voice, or video sequence.
- Describe the tool’s role accurately: distinguish generating material from editing, brainstorming, or other assistance.
- State human involvement honestly: say what you actually reviewed, selected, changed, or verified.
- Keep the scope proportionate: do not describe a work as wholly AI-generated if the tool affected only one isolated element; do not use a vague “AI-assisted” label to obscure substantial generated content.
For example: “I used [tool/model] to generate the clouds in the background. I selected and edited the result before adding it to the illustration.” Replace the bracketed text with accurate details; do not imply review or editing that did not happen.

Where should you put the disclosure?
Choose a format that people can actually encounter in the work’s context, and also complete any required submission fields. A disclosure in machine-readable metadata may help describe provenance, but it is not necessarily visible to an audience or a substitute for a notice required by a law, publisher, or platform.
| Format or channel | Practical placement | What it does—and does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Text, article, or manuscript | A short note near the work, or in credits or methods where that is the relevant convention. | The CDC recommends written disclosure for scientific products; other publishers may specify their own placement. |
| Visual artwork | An adjacent caption or credits note that is legible in the way the work is presented. | The CDC recommends visible labels paired with accessible text for visual scientific content. This is guidance, not a universal rule for all artwork. |
| Audio or video | A visible or audible cue suited to the format and applicable requirements. | The CDC recommends verbal disclosure for speech/audio in scientific products. A cue’s exact form depends on the relevant rules and context. |
| Platform or distributor submission | Use the platform’s current upload, delivery, or metadata workflow. | A structured declaration can meet a platform’s submission process; it may not serve as an audience-facing disclosure. |
| Provenance metadata | Retain supported provenance information in the exported file where available. | It can record origin or history, but may be lost and does not replace a required visible notice. |
Do you have to disclose that you used AI?
It depends on the law that applies to the work, the content itself, and the rules of the publisher, distributor, marketplace, or platform. Separate four kinds of expectations before deciding what to publish:
- Legal requirements: check the applicable jurisdiction and whether the work falls within a rule’s defined scope.
- Platform or publisher rules: check the relevant account workflow, submission guidance, contract, or editorial policy.
- Professional or organizational guidance: follow applicable standards, while distinguishing recommendations from binding requirements.
- Voluntary transparency: decide whether a clear note would help audiences understand a meaningful AI contribution even when no specific rule requires one.
Do not assume that every AI-assisted creative work must carry a public label. Equally, the absence of a broad rule in one source does not establish that no requirement applies to a particular creator or release.

What does the EU AI Act require for creative work?
As of 2 August 2026, the European Commission says the AI Act’s Article 50 transparency obligations apply. The Commission’s Code of Practice is voluntary guidance for compliance; the underlying legal obligations are not voluntary. The scope relevant to public disclosure is narrower than a blanket label on all AI-assisted work.
Deepfakes and specified public-interest text
The Commission describes Article 50(4) as covering deepfake image, audio, or video content that resembles real people, objects, places, entities, or events and falsely appears authentic. It also covers AI-generated or manipulated text published to inform the public on a matter of public interest when there has been no human review or editorial control and no person has assumed editorial responsibility. These are defined categories, not a general requirement to label every creative use of AI.
Artistic and editorial qualifications
When deepfake content is part of an evidently artistic, creative, satirical, fictional, or analogous work or programme, the disclosure should be appropriate and must not hamper the work’s display or enjoyment. For the specified public-interest text, the Commission says disclosure is not required where a person has reviewed or editorially controlled it and a natural or legal person holds editorial responsibility.

The Commission describes optional icons and placement guidance, but an icon alone does not establish compliance. Creators and publishers should check the applicable requirements rather than treating a visible symbol as a complete implementation.
What do U.S. copyright rules say about disclosure?
Copyrightability and AI-use disclosure are separate questions. The U.S. Copyright Office’s 29 January 2025 summary says that copyright protection for generative AI output depends on whether a human author determined sufficient expressive elements. It says mere prompting is not enough, while human-authored expression perceptible in the output and human creative arrangement or modification may qualify. AI assistance or inclusion of generated material in a larger human-created work does not, by itself, bar copyrightability.
Those copyright principles do not establish a general public disclosure duty. Check any separate legal, contractual, publisher, or platform requirement that applies to the work.

How should music creators handle YouTube’s AI declaration?
YouTube’s guidance for music partners provides structured classifications through DDEX or CSV delivery metadata: “Fully Gen AI,” “Partly Gen AI,” and “No Gen AI.” The examples show why the whole delivery package matters: a track with recorded vocals over generated layers, or human-performed audio accompanied by AI-generated visuals, can be classified as “Partly Gen AI.” The guidance also gives routine pitch correction and AI mastering as “No Gen AI” examples.
These categories are specific to YouTube music-partner delivery guidance. Do not assume they apply to every YouTube upload or to another service. Follow the current delivery documentation and workflow for the account or distributor handling the release.
Can metadata or a watermark replace a visible label?
No—not when a visible notice is required. OpenAI describes C2PA Content Credentials as provenance information that can include origin and history, such as the tool and creation time. It also warns that credentials may be lost through common actions such as screenshots or file conversion. Watermark availability varies by product, model, export path, file type, and creation date.

Treat provenance as supplementary information, not as proof that an audience-facing or platform disclosure has been made. Do not promise that provenance detection will survive editing, conversion, reposting, or other distribution steps.
A release checklist for creators
- Identify which elements of the work were generated, transformed, or materially assisted by AI.
- Check the relevant jurisdiction, contract, publisher policy, distributor, and platform workflow for specific disclosure requirements.
- Write a concise, accurate statement naming the contribution and, where useful or required, the tool or model and your actual review or editing.
- Place the statement where it is usable in context—such as a caption, credits, methods note, or audible/visible cue—and complete any separate platform submission fields.
- Keep provenance metadata where supported, but do not rely on it to replace an audience-facing notice or a required declaration.
For consequential legal exposure, identify the creator’s location, intended audience markets, medium, and distribution route, then consult the applicable primary rules or qualified counsel. Requirements beyond the EU, U.S. copyright, and YouTube music-partner examples described here are not established by those sources.
