To back up a Nintendo Switch 2 save to the cloud, you need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a game that supports Save Data Cloud. To restore it, download that game’s cloud save—but check the timestamps first: downloading replaces the console’s existing save, and Nintendo says overwritten data cannot be recovered. If both consoles are available and you want to move a save without a membership, use nearby-console transfer instead.
Choose the right method before changing a save
| Decision | Save Data Cloud | Nearby-console transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online membership | Required | Not required |
| Are both consoles needed at once? | No | Yes; the consoles must be near each other |
| Internet connection | Required to use the service | Both consoles must be connected to the internet |
| What happens to the save? | Backs up to the cloud; downloading replaces the console copy | Moves the save and deletes it from the source console |
| Main risk | Downloading an older cloud copy can overwrite a newer console save | The source copy is removed; overwriting a target save cannot be undone |
| Compatibility | The game must support Save Data Cloud | Use the in-console prompts; compatibility depends on the software |
Use cloud backup if you want a copy associated with your Nintendo Account or need to recover a save without the original console. Use local transfer when both consoles are available and you intend to move the save. Nintendo’s instructions are available for backing up saves, downloading cloud backups, and transferring saves to a nearby console.

Back up a compatible save to the cloud
Cloud backup requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and not every game supports it. Nintendo enables automatic backup for compatible software when a membership starts; settings can be adjusted for each game and user. For a manual backup, use either route below.
From the HOME Menu
- On HOME, highlight the game whose save you want to back up.
- Press + or −, then choose Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user whose save you want to back up.
- Choose Back Up Save Data.
From System Settings
- Open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user and game.
- Choose Back Up Save Data.
If the console reports that the game does not support cloud backup, that software is incompatible with this service. Check the game’s own Save Data Cloud entry rather than assuming support; Nintendo does not provide a complete list of every compatible and incompatible title in the cited backup instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Check which copy is newest before restoring
Before uploading or downloading, compare the console and cloud save timestamps for the selected user and game. If the console copy is newer, back it up manually. If the cloud copy is newer, download it. This check helps avoid replacing a newer save with an older one.
Restore a cloud save to the console
Restoring means downloading the cloud copy. This replaces the existing save for that game on the console, and Nintendo says the overwritten data cannot be recovered. Confirm the timestamps and choose the correct user before proceeding.

- 6.2” LCD screen

- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Download manually from the HOME Menu
- On HOME, highlight the game.
- Press + or −, then choose Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user whose save you want to restore.
- Choose Download Save Data.
Download manually from System Settings
- Open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user and game.
- Choose Download Save Data.
Use automatic download
Automatic download is available when enabled. Nintendo says the console can download newer cloud data while in Sleep Mode; leave the console in Sleep Mode until the download finishes.
Move a save directly between nearby consoles
Nintendo’s nearby-console transfer does not require Nintendo Switch Online. Both consoles must be connected to the internet, close to each other, and have the same Nintendo Account linked to a user on each console.

- On the source console, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Choose the user and save, then follow the on-screen prompts.
- On the target console, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Receive Save Data.
- Follow the prompts to complete the transfer.
This is a move, not a backup: sending the save deletes it from the source console. If a save for the same game already exists on the target and you choose to overwrite it, that existing target save is replaced and cannot be recovered.
Quick Recap
Account and cross-console limits
- Cloud save data is unique to each user and cannot be transferred between users. Select the user associated with the save you want.
- For local transfer, the same Nintendo Account must be linked to a user on both consoles.
- Nintendo Switch software saves can be shared between Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch when the same Nintendo Account is used. A Switch 2 Edition save may be accessed on a Nintendo Switch, but Switch 2-exclusive enhancements and content require a Nintendo Switch 2. See Nintendo’s guidance on playing games across multiple Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch consoles.
- If your Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, cloud backup access is blocked. Nintendo says resubscribing within 180 days restores access to previous backups; its cited support page does not state that access is restored after that window.
