An upgrade may have exposed a compatibility issue, but timing alone does not prove it caused the failure.
Identify the game, edition, and upgrade
Before changing settings, write down the exact Metro title and edition, the launcher you use, your Windows version, and what “upgrade” means in this case: a Windows update, graphics-driver update, hardware change, game patch, or switch to a different edition. Note the full error message and whether the game appears briefly in Task Manager. Those details help distinguish a game-file problem from an edition or system-compatibility mismatch.

Steam says launch failures can have many causes across different hardware and software configurations, so its general checklist is a first-pass process rather than a diagnosis. Steam Support’s launch troubleshooting guide describes the range of possible causes.

Try the safe general fixes first
1. Restart, then update Windows and graphics drivers
Restart the PC, then check for applicable Windows updates and current graphics drivers. Steam’s general launch-failure guidance includes updating Windows and system-component drivers. If the issue began immediately after a driver update, record the driver version and timing; do not assume a driver rollback or a third-party driver updater is the right fix without evidence.

2. Verify the game files in its launcher
Use the launcher’s built-in file verification or repair option for the installed Metro game. Steam identifies corruption in extracted game files as one possible reason a game will not start and links to its verification instructions. If you use Epic Games or another launcher, follow that launcher’s current official steps rather than applying Steam menu labels to it.
3. Temporarily close nonessential background software
Close nonessential applications and overlays, then try launching again. This is a test, not a recommendation to permanently disable security software. If the game starts, re-enable or reopen items one at a time to narrow down what conflicts.

Check the requirements for your exact Metro edition
Do not treat Metro Exodus and Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition as interchangeable for graphics compatibility. The Steam listing says the Enhanced Edition requires an Nvidia RTX or AMD RX GPU. A PC that can run the original edition may therefore still be incompatible with Enhanced Edition.

These are listing requirements, not proof that a mismatch caused your individual launch failure. Check the current listing for the edition you own and your platform. The Steam page lists Windows 7/8/10 in the original game’s requirements, but Steam Client support has been limited to Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024; a legacy game requirement does not guarantee that the current launcher supports that operating system. Check the Metro Exodus Steam listing for the game details and edition-specific notes.
Epic’s FAQ records historical original-game requirements and says RTX features required Windows 10 RS5 (Build 1809) or newer and DirectX 12. When to contact official support
If the checks do not resolve the problem, contact the publisher’s official support route instead of buying replacement hardware or repair software on speculation. Include the game and edition, launcher, Windows version or build, GPU and driver version, what changed before the failure, the exact error text, whether the process appears in Task Manager, and the steps you have already tried.
