How to Check Whether an Old PC Component Is Compatible With Your Motherboard

Check an old CPU, memory kit, M.2 SSD, or PCIe card against your motherboard’s exact model, revision, support lists, and manual before installing it.

Start with the exact motherboard model and revision, then compare the old component’s full model number with the manufacturer’s support page and manual. A connector that physically fits is not proof that the component will work: CPU support can depend on chipset and BIOS, memory on type and configuration, M.2 storage on interface and key, and PCIe cards on slot and lane sharing.

What you need before checking compatibility

Compatibility is tied to the exact motherboard, and sometimes its revision or firmware. If the board came in a prebuilt PC, check the system maker’s documentation as well as any board information you can identify.

  • Motherboard: record the complete model and revision.
  • Component: record its complete model or part number—not only its product family or connector type.
  • Documentation: locate the board’s exact support page, specifications, manual, CPU support list, memory QVL, and relevant BIOS notes.

How to check compatibility step by step

  1. Identify the motherboard’s model and revision. For an OEM or prebuilt system, use the system vendor’s documentation if the board model or support details differ from retail boards.
  2. Find the component’s full model or part number. A broad label such as “DDR4 RAM,” “M.2 SSD,” or a processor family is not specific enough to verify a match.
  3. Open the manufacturer’s support page for that exact board. Consult the CPU support list, memory QVL, specifications, BIOS notes, and manual according to the component you plan to reuse.
  4. Match the physical interface and the electrical protocol or platform. Check socket and platform for a CPU; DIMM type and configuration for memory; key, length, and SATA or PCIe interface for M.2 storage; and slot plus lane arrangement for a PCIe card.
  5. Check conditional requirements, including minimum BIOS, supported CPU generation, memory speed and module configuration, and slot-sharing notes. If an essential detail is absent, ask the motherboard maker or system vendor before installing the part.
  6. If documentation lists the exact component as supported, follow the board maker’s installation and firmware guidance. A QVL is evidence of tested configurations, not a substitute for checking the exact board and its requirements.

How to check an old CPU

Look up the processor’s exact model in the motherboard’s CPU support list. Verify the socket, supported chipset/platform, and any minimum BIOS or firmware version shown for that CPU. A matching socket alone does not establish support.

Intel’s documentation illustrates why: 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation Core desktop processors use LGA1700 and require Intel 600- or 700-series chipset boards, while some 600- and 700-series boards may need current BIOS, firmware, or CSME when upgrading among those generations. Use the exact board and processor entries rather than generalizing from the socket. See Intel’s compatibility guidance for 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation Core desktop processors.

Before an upgrade, check the board maker’s BIOS instructions and confirm the required update path. Do not assume that a BIOS update can make every unsupported processor work.

How to check memory

Confirm the board’s memory type, supported speeds, capacity limits, and supported module count or arrangement in its specifications. These details can vary with the motherboard and CPU. Then search the board’s memory QVL using the kit’s exact part number, not just its advertised speed or capacity.

ASUS says its CPU and memory QVLs are available from the motherboard model’s support page and that it verifies listed combinations for compatibility and stability. If problems persist with a listed configuration, ASUS recommends considering a BIOS update. Its instructions are in How to query the CPU or memory QVL list.

How to check an M.2 SSD

M.2 describes a form factor, not a guarantee that a drive and slot use the same interface. Check the exact slot’s key, supported drive length, and bus protocol: SATA, PCIe/NVMe, or both. A drive may fit the M.2 shape but still be incompatible with the slot’s supported protocol or key.

Intel’s motherboard buying guide describes M.2 devices with different keys and interfaces. The board’s own specifications are decisive: for example, ASUS lists the supported sizes and PCIe mode for the Key M slot on its PRIME B760M-R D4 specifications page. Do not assume another board’s M.2 slot supports the same drives.

How to check a graphics card or other PCIe card

Compare the card with the motherboard manual’s slot information. Check the physical slot, its electrical or link configuration, and any lane-allocation notes. A card may fit a slot while operating at a different link width than expected, or its use may affect another slot. Intel notes that lane use and link width can change when multiple devices occupy slots; board-level routing and switches can also affect the arrangement.

What to compare when choosing between old parts

Component Checks that determine compatibility
CPU Exact CPU support-list entry; socket and chipset/platform; minimum BIOS or firmware.
Memory Memory type; capacity, speed, and module configuration; exact kit part number on the QVL where available.
M.2 storage Slot key; supported length; SATA or PCIe/NVMe protocol; exact board specifications.
PCIe card Physical slot; electrical/link configuration; lane sharing; card power, clearance, and firmware requirements.

When the documentation is inconclusive

Do not treat a partial match—such as the same socket, a fitting card, or an M.2 connector—as confirmation. If the exact component, board revision, required firmware, or interface support cannot be established from the manufacturer’s documentation, contact the motherboard maker or system vendor before installation.
