How to Fix a LinkedIn Preview That Shows the Wrong Image

Refresh the URL in LinkedIn Post Inspector, verify the page’s Open Graph image and public access, then allow time for the cache to update. Existing posts keep their original preview.

If a LinkedIn link preview shows an old or incorrect image, enter the exact URL in LinkedIn’s Post Inspector to refresh its cached preview data. If the image is still wrong, fix the page’s Open Graph tags and make sure LinkedIn can fetch the image. The refresh applies to future shares, not posts that are already published.

Refresh the URL in LinkedIn Post Inspector

  1. Open LinkedIn Post Inspector.
  2. Enter the exact URL you intend to share, including the correct page path, and run the inspection.
  3. Check the preview LinkedIn returns. If it now shows the right image, share the URL again in a new post.

LinkedIn caches preview details for previously shared URLs. Post Inspector refreshes the information used for new posts; it does not update the preview on an existing post. LinkedIn puts it plainly: “The changes you make will only affect the URL’s preview image and information for new posts that include it. The preview for any existing posts with this URL will remain the same.”

Check the page’s sharing metadata

If Post Inspector still returns the wrong image, inspect the source page. LinkedIn uses oEmbed and/or Open Graph Protocol information to build a link preview. For a page you manage, check that its Open Graph properties point to the intended page and image:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • og:title — the title LinkedIn should display.
  • og:description — the description for the preview.
  • og:image — the full URL of the intended image.
  • og:url — the canonical URL for the page being shared.

Correct stale, missing, or mismatched values in the page’s HTML or the system that generates its metadata. If the page uses a caching layer, make sure it serves the corrected tags before inspecting the URL again. LinkedIn’s website sharing guidance explains the metadata used for sharing.

Make sure LinkedIn can retrieve the image

A correct og:image value is not enough if LinkedIn’s crawler cannot access the file. Open the image URL and confirm it resolves to the intended image without a login, permission wall, or other restriction. LinkedIn notes that blocked retrieval and protected image directories can prevent an image from appearing.

  • Use a publicly accessible image URL that returns the image itself.
  • Check that the file still exists and that the address in og:image is correct.
  • Meet LinkedIn’s published image guidance: a minimum of 1200 × 627 pixels, a recommended 1.91:1 aspect ratio, and a maximum file size of 5 MB.

Allow time for changed metadata to appear

After changing the page metadata or image, LinkedIn advises allowing 48 hours from the last share or metadata update for the changed information to appear. Then run the URL through Post Inspector again and check the preview before sharing it in a new post. The 48-hour figure is LinkedIn’s cache guidance, not a guaranteed processing time.

For a LinkedIn Page post, consider the image override

If you are a LinkedIn Page super admin or content admin composing a Page post, LinkedIn allows you to customize the preview image and title during composition. This is an option for eligible Page admins, not a general control available for every member’s link post. LinkedIn advises using an image that is 1200 × 627 pixels; images narrower than 200 pixels display as thumbnails. See LinkedIn’s instructions for customizing a LinkedIn Page post preview.

When the preview is missing or an existing post is broken

  • “Cannot display preview” on a Page post: LinkedIn identifies the landing page’s SSL certificate as one possible cause. Check that the page loads securely and that its certificate is valid.
  • An image broke after publishing: Check whether the original image still exists and whether its URL is still correct. Refreshing Post Inspector will not rewrite the preview in a published post.
  • The preview looks wrong only in your browser: LinkedIn lists clearing browser cache and cookies as a troubleshooting step. This addresses a local display issue; it does not repair incorrect page metadata.

For other URL-sharing problems, consult LinkedIn’s URL troubleshooting guidance and its Page-post troubleshooting steps.
