Compress an Open Graph image by reducing the encoded file size—not by shrinking its intended pixel dimensions—and compare the export at the size it will appear in a share card. There is no universal Open Graph quality setting or file-size target: choose a format the destination supports, use the least aggressive compression that meets its actual limit, and check the published preview.
What compression changes—and what Open Graph requires
Image compression changes how image data is encoded; resizing changes its pixel dimensions. If a share image looks soft because it was made too small, more compression will not fix it. Keep the dimensions intended for the destination and optimize the encoding instead.

The Open Graph protocol’s four basic required properties are og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. The image property points to an image representing the page. The protocol also documents optional image properties for MIME type, width, height, HTTPS alternative, and descriptive alt text. It recommends og:image:alt to describe the image’s content, not to add a caption. The protocol does not define a universal image size, file-size cap, JPEG quality value, or compression recipe. | Format | Good starting point | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | Photographs | Lossy compression can create artifacts, especially around text, crisp edges, and gradients. Inspect the export at preview size. |
| PNG | Transparency, flat graphics, or text-heavy artwork | Files may be larger. If you switch formats to reduce size, check transparency and edge quality in the result. |
| WebP | When the destination’s crawler accepts it | WebP supports both lossy and lossless encoding, transparency, metadata, and color profiles, but support should be verified for the target platform rather than assumed. RFC 9649. |
No format is always smallest or sharpest for every image. Compare candidates for visible fidelity, file size, destination support, transparency and edge handling, and whether metadata and dimensions remain accurate.
#1 Best Overall
- ✔️ AI Upscaling up to 8K: Enlarge small, low-resolution, or old photos with crisp details, clean edges, and fewer artifacts — perfect for prints, social media, blogs, and online galleries.
- ✔️ Fix blurry or noisy photos: AI restores clarity by enhancing textures, sharpening faces, hair, and fine details while reducing noise and JPEG compression errors.
- ✔️ Ideal for family photos, scans & mobile images: Improve pictures from smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, scanners, and old archives with professional-quality results.
- ✔️ Fast & easy 1-click enhancement: Batch-process multiple photos at once and improve image quality instantly — no editing experience required.
- ✔️ Reliable results & broad file support: Works with JPG, PNG, TIFF and more — stable AI processing even on old, compressed or damaged photos.
A careful export and validation workflow
- Keep a high-quality master. Preserve the original or an exportable source so you can make a less aggressive version if the preview suffers.
- Preserve the intended dimensions. Avoid reducing width and height just to meet a byte target unless the destination’s requirements call for different dimensions.
- Export a suitable format. Start with JPEG for a photograph or PNG for transparency and many sharp-edged graphics. Try WebP only after checking that the target crawler supports it.
- Adjust compression in small steps. Export a candidate, compare it side by side with the master at the expected card size, and choose the least aggressive setting that meets a real destination limit.
- Inspect for artifacts. Look for blur, ringing, blockiness, banding, halos around text, and lost fine detail. A single quality percentage is not a reliable target across different encoders and image content.
- Publish accurate metadata and a reachable image. Use an absolute, publicly accessible image URL. Where known, set the correct MIME type and pixel dimensions; include descriptive
og:image:alt. - Check the actual share card. Inspect the preview with the destination platform’s debugger or inspector. If it still shows an older image, request a fresh scrape where available; cached previews can lag behind page updates.
Platform size advice is not an Open Graph rule
Limits depend on the destination, and the figures below are secondary-source guidance rather than requirements in the Open Graph protocol. The Facebook figures come from og-image.org, accessed in 2026: it recommends 1200 × 630 pixels, gives 600 × 315 pixels as a minimum, and reports an 8 MB maximum. Confirm the current limit with the destination before treating it as a constraint. og-image.org Facebook image guidance.
Wix Help Center states that WhatsApp image previews display only when the image is under 300 KB; this is platform-specific guidance, not a universal target for other share previews. Wix Help Center.

Fix common preview problems
- The image looks blurry: Check its pixel dimensions and inspect it at the card’s display size. If it was resized too small, export again from the master at the intended dimensions rather than increasing compression.
- Text or edges look rough: Lossy compression may be too aggressive for sharp details. Reduce compression, compare a PNG export, or test another supported format.
- The file exceeds a destination limit: Make small compression adjustments and compare each result visually. Consider a different format only if the artwork and crawler support it; do not assume a generic quality value will produce a particular byte size.
- The preview still shows the previous image: The platform may have cached the old card. Use its debugger or inspector to request a fresh scrape if that option is available. og-image.org describes the Facebook Sharing Debugger and rescrape control. Facebook preview debugging guidance.
- The image does not appear: Confirm that the
og:imageURL is absolute and publicly reachable, and check that the destination accepts the file format. Verify the image properties and inspect the destination’s preview tool.

If you need a screenshot of a web page as an image, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its output is a page capture, not a substitute for compressing an existing artwork file.

- Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdffor Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. - The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
