If a horror game shows “Preparing to launch” and then stops, closes immediately, or never creates a window, work through the fixes in this order: restart Windows, install Windows and graphics-driver updates, verify the game files, check requirements, close software that hooks into games, inspect antivirus quarantine, and repair the bundled DirectX or Visual C++ prerequisites. This sequence starts with reversible fixes and uses the exact error message to decide when a deeper change is justified.
Start with the symptom, not another reinstall
A failed launch can originate in the download, the launcher, Windows, a graphics driver, a runtime library, security software, or another program monitoring the system. Reinstalling the whole game before identifying the failing layer often repeats the same problem. First note what you see and whether other games behave normally.

Write down the game title and version shown by the launcher, your Windows edition and version, graphics-card model, driver version, the launcher you use, and the complete error text. A screenshot is useful, but copy the code or DLL name as text as well.
Follow the low-risk launch repair sequence
1. Restart Windows completely
Use Start > Power > Restart, not only sleep or hibernate. A restart completes pending driver or runtime updates, releases a file locked by a crashed process, and clears a launcher that is stuck in the background. After signing in, open the game before starting other utilities so you can tell whether the restart changed the result.

2. Update Windows and the graphics driver
Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart when Windows asks. Then install the current driver for your graphics processor from its manufacturer’s official support channel, selecting the package that matches your GPU and Windows architecture. Steam’s launch guidance puts Windows and computer-driver updates near the beginning because games depend on both the operating-system components and the graphics stack.
An update is not proof that every optional game component is installed. Microsoft specifically warns that Windows Update and service packs do not provide any of DirectX’s optional components. Treat a later DirectX repair as a separate step when the game reports a missing component.
3. Confirm that the computer meets the game’s stated requirements
Read the developer’s minimum and recommended requirements on the game’s store or support page. Compare them with the installed Windows version, 64-bit or 32-bit architecture where specified, processor, graphics processor and its video memory, system RAM, free storage, and required graphics API. Some horror games require a particular DirectX feature level or a 64-bit version of Windows even when another game on the same PC runs normally.

- Leave more free storage than the listed installation size so the launcher can unpack updates and create shader or configuration data.
- Check whether the requirement applies to a minimum resolution, ray-tracing mode, or other optional feature rather than to launching at all.
If the game never reaches a window, do not assume that lowering graphics settings will help: settings cannot be changed in a menu the game cannot open. Requirement mismatches need an upgrade, a supported operating-system configuration, or title-specific guidance.
4. Verify the installation in Steam
For a Steam installation, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files, and click Verify integrity of game files. Wait for the process to finish before pressing Play. Steam uses this check to compare local files with the expected installation and replace files that are missing or corrupted after a failed download, disk error, or interrupted update.

Verification can download replacements and may reset a modified file. It normally does not erase saves stored separately, but back up locally stored saves if the game’s support page says they are inside the installation directory. If verification reports that files were reacquired, launch again before trying more invasive changes.
5. Try the installed executable only as a diagnostic
If the platform does nothing, open the game’s installation folder from its Properties page and run the game’s launcher or main executable once. This is not a replacement for the platform: achievements, launch options, copy protection, and prerequisite checks may depend on it. The purpose is to reveal a Windows message, missing DLL notice, or permission error that the platform hides. Record that message, close the executable, and return to the supported launcher for normal play.

Remove conflicts without weakening Windows security
Close overlays and monitoring utilities
Games can fail when another program injects an overlay, records frames, changes performance settings, filters traffic, scans files continuously, or monitors disk activity while the launcher is starting. Exit these programs from their notification-area menus, then try the game with only the launcher running. Test one change at a time so you know which program matters.
- Disable in-game overlays supplied by the launcher, chat clients, or graphics utilities.
- Quit screen recorders, streaming tools, frame-rate counters, hardware monitors, and performance-tuning utilities.
- Close system cleaners, ad blockers, proxy or network-filtering tools, and disk-activity monitors temporarily.
- Pause third-party game managers or mod loaders and return the game to its unmodified state.
Steam notes that software modifying or monitoring system, disk, or network activity can interfere with the client and games. If the game launches after one utility is closed, update that utility, turn off only its game hook or overlay, or ask its publisher for a compatibility fix rather than leaving every protection disabled.

Check antivirus quarantine and exclusions carefully
A game that suddenly reports a missing executable may have been quarantined by antivirus software. Open the security product’s protection history and look for an event naming the game’s folder or executable. Restore or allow the file only when you have confirmed that the installation came from the legitimate launcher and the path is the expected one. Then run the launcher’s file verification again, because a restored file may still be incomplete.

Do not add a broad exclusion for an entire drive, disable protection permanently, or restore a file merely because its name resembles the game. If you must test an exclusion, make it narrow and temporary, launch once, and immediately restore normal protection. If the alert continues, submit the file to the security vendor or contact the game developer instead of overriding repeated detections.
Repair DirectX and Visual C++ prerequisites
When DirectX is the likely cause
Use this branch when the launcher names DirectX, a graphics API component, or a related DLL. Run the DirectX installer bundled in the game’s installation folder first, if one is provided. Some games include optional legacy components even on a current Windows installation. Install only from the game’s legitimate files or Microsoft’s official distribution, then restart if requested.
Having a current DirectX version in Windows does not guarantee that optional components used by an older game are present. Microsoft states: “Do not assume that the latest optional components are already installed on a system, because Windows Update and Service Packs do not provide any of DirectX’s optional components.” That distinction explains why a fully updated PC can still show a DirectX-related launch error.
When Visual C++ is the likely cause
If the message names a Visual C++ runtime or a DLL beginning with a runtime-related prefix, run the Visual C++ redistributable installer supplied with the game or obtain the matching package from Microsoft. Choose the architecture required by the game and Windows. On a 64-bit Windows installation, a 32-bit game may need the x86 package, while a 64-bit game needs x64; some systems require both because different games use different architectures.

Epic’s support guidance notes that some prerequisites, including Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables, require a computer restart before a game can run. Restart after installation even if the installer does not make the prompt prominent, then try the game again. Do not delete random DLL files or copy DLLs from an unrelated download site; mismatched runtime files can create a second failure and a security risk.

“The executable is missing”
Check antivirus quarantine first, confirm that the game’s installation folder is on a healthy drive, and verify files. If verification cannot restore the executable, pause mods, check available storage, and examine the launcher’s download error. A drive that is full, disconnected, or reporting errors can repeatedly produce an incomplete installation.
A named DLL or runtime error
Identify whether the message points to DirectX, Visual C++, a graphics driver, or a game-specific file. Repair the corresponding prerequisite using the steps above, restart, and verify files. Installing several unofficial “DLL fix” packages at once makes the cause harder to identify and can introduce malicious files.
The game closes with no message
After restarting, verifying files, and checking requirements, close overlays and monitoring tools. Launch the executable once from the installation folder to see whether Windows supplies a more specific error. If the crash began immediately after a driver, Windows, mod, or antivirus change, test by reverting that single change through its supported settings or by installing the current stable driver supplied by the manufacturer.
A black screen or a frozen first frame
Give the game a short moment after the first launch if it is compiling shaders, but do not repeatedly force-close it during that process. If it remains frozen, test with overlays and recording tools closed, confirm that the game is using the intended GPU on a laptop, and check the developer’s requirements for the supported graphics API. A black screen is not evidence that reinstalling a runtime will help unless the error identifies that runtime.
Compare fixes by scope, recent change, and reversibility
When two actions seem plausible, choose the one that fits the evidence and is easiest to undo. This prevents a security setting or system component from being changed unnecessarily.

When reinstalling is justified
Reinstall only after restart, updates, verification, requirement checks, conflict testing, and prerequisite repair have failed, or when the launcher cannot repair a demonstrably damaged installation. Before uninstalling, back up saves, screenshots, configuration files, and mods according to the game’s support instructions. Remove leftover files only when the developer’s procedure calls for it; deleting a folder blindly can remove saves or logs that support staff need.
After reinstalling, launch once with no mods, overlays, or custom injectors. If the clean installation fails in the same way, the cause is probably outside the game files and another reinstall is unlikely to help.

Steam explains that games may fail for many reasons and that unique hardware and software configurations can make diagnosis difficult. A concise evidence package lets the developer distinguish a reproducible game defect from a local configuration problem.
- Exact game title, edition, and launcher.
- Windows edition, version, and whether it is 64-bit.
- CPU, GPU model, installed RAM, and graphics-driver version.
- The complete error text or code, plus a screenshot if useful.
- When the failure started and any recent driver, Windows, antivirus, mod, or hardware change.
- Whether other games launch and which of the steps above changed the behavior.
- The game’s crash log, launcher log, or Windows event details if the developer requests them.
Send those details through the game developer’s official support channel. If the failure affects multiple programs or Windows itself reports hardware or disk errors, use a qualified technician rather than repeatedly changing security settings or downloading replacement system files.
What a successful fix should look like
The launcher should complete its start sequence, create a game window, and reach its first menu without antivirus warnings or repeated prerequisite prompts. Re-enable overlays and other utilities one at a time only after a clean launch; if the failure returns, the last item re-enabled is the strongest lead. Keep the exact error and successful change in your notes so a future update can be diagnosed without starting from scratch.
