A GGUF metadata error in Ollama does not point to one universal fault. Start by noting whether it occurs during ollama create or only when you run the imported model; then check that you have the intended, complete GGUF file and that your Ollama version supports its architecture. Avoid editing metadata as a first fix.
Start with the exact error and when it appears
Save the complete terminal output, your Ollama version, the model name or repository, and the exact GGUF filenames. The stage matters: Ollama reads GGUF metadata during import and again when loading model layers, so an error during creation points to a different part of the workflow than one that appears only when running the model.

- During
ollama createor import: Check the file type, download completeness, and shard set first. - Only when running an imported model: Check the model architecture, runtime compatibility, and file integrity.
GGUF stores typed key-value metadata, including model hyperparameters. As the GGUF file format specification explains, “The key difference between GGJT and GGUF is the use of a key-value structure for the hyperparameters (now referred to as metadata), rather than a list of untyped values.” A structured format can be extended, but a reader still needs to support the model’s architecture and relevant metadata fields.

Check that you downloaded the right kind of GGUF
Review the model publisher’s download page and the filenames. A GGUF file may contain a regular model, a LoRA adapter, or vocabulary-only data; these are not interchangeable. Ollama’s create implementation rejects adapter-kind GGUF files on that import path. If you selected an adapter or vocabulary-only file, follow the publisher’s instructions and obtain the intended base model in a GGUF format supported by your runtime.

Verify the download and all model shards
If the model is split across multiple GGUF files, treat them as one set. Confirm every shard is present and that all files come from the same model release and quantization. Ollama’s source includes handling for split GGUF layers, but that does not establish a universal manual repair for an incomplete or mismatched set.
- Replace a missing, interrupted, truncated, or suspicious file with a complete download from the model publisher.
- Do not rename unrelated shards to make them appear to belong together.
- Retry the import only after the full, coherent file set is in place.
Check architecture support and Ollama compatibility
Compare the model’s stated architecture and runtime requirements with your installed Ollama version. If the error identifies an unsupported architecture or metadata field, update Ollama to a release that supports that model or choose an export compatible with your installed version. There is no single minimum Ollama version to recommend without knowing the model and the exact error.

Do not use Ollama’s create quantization option for GGUF
Ollama’s import documentation and source distinguish import types: create-time quantization is supported for safetensors imports, not GGUF imports. Quantize a GGUF with llama.cpp tooling before importing it. A rejected quantization option is a configuration issue, not a repair for malformed or unreadable metadata.

| Symptom | First check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
Fails during ollama create |
Correct file kind, valid GGUF, and complete download | Obtain the intended full model file and verify its source and file set. |
| Adapter or vocabulary-only file | GGUF kind and repository instructions | Use the compatible base model; Ollama’s current create path rejects adapter-kind GGUF files. |
| Fails only when running an imported model | Exact load error, architecture, and Ollama version | Check runtime support and model-file integrity. |
| Split model fails | All shards are present and match the same release and quantization | Re-download a complete, coherent shard set. |
| Quantization option is rejected | Whether the import is GGUF | Quantize with llama.cpp tooling before importing into Ollama. |
Why changing metadata is risky
Do not edit general.architecture or other metadata fields merely to silence an error unless the model publisher documents the correction. Metadata describes the model; changing an architecture label can make a file appear to parse without making its tensor layout compatible. Prefer a verified export or a supported conversion path.
