If your gaming laptop gets louder when a game starts and quiets down after you exit, its fans may simply be responding to heavier CPU and GPU workloads. Start by checking whether the noise follows load, then restore clear airflow, look for unnecessary background activity, and use the laptop maker’s own thermal controls. Noise that persists at idle, rattling or grinding, no apparent airflow, unexpected shutdowns, or a sustained drop in performance deserves further investigation.
Is it normal for a gaming laptop to get hot or loud while gaming?
Often, yes. Games can keep a laptop’s CPU and GPU busy for extended periods. As those components warm up, the cooling system may increase fan speed. ASUS describes this load-related behavior for gaming, and MSI likewise treats fan activity as part of cooling under workload. A louder fan during a demanding game is not, by itself, proof of a fault.

There is no single temperature that defines overheating for every gaming laptop. Cooling behavior depends on the model, components, workload, and control settings. HP’s temperature points for particular OMEN and Victus processor families are model-specific control guidance, not a universal safety line for all laptops. Do not diagnose a problem from one temperature reading without checking guidance for your exact model.
First decide whether the symptom follows workload
Notice when the fans become loud and when they settle. If fan speed rises with a game or other heavy task and falls after that task ends, the laptop may be operating as designed. If the fans remain loud while the laptop is idle, make unusual rattling or grinding sounds, appear not to move air, or accompany shutdowns or declining performance, continue with the checks below rather than assuming the noise is normal. Dell lists loud fans, shutdowns, and reduced performance among possible overheating symptoms.

A fan does not necessarily need to run continuously. Fan activation thresholds and available controls vary by model, so a fan that stops during light use is not automatically broken.
Use the timing of the symptom as a practical first clue, not as a final diagnosis. Write down whether it starts immediately when a game launches, builds after a longer session, continues after the game closes, or occurs during light tasks too. Also note whether the laptop is on a desk or a soft surface and whether you recently changed a thermal mode. That simple record can help distinguish a workload-related change from a problem that deserves diagnostics.
What can cause persistent heat or fan noise?
- Blocked airflow: A bed, blanket, couch, pillow, or other soft surface can obstruct openings. Dust can also restrict airflow through vents.
- High background activity: An application or process using substantial CPU or memory can keep the system busy even when you are not actively gaming.
- Thermal settings: A performance-oriented mode may permit more fan noise, while a quieter mode may limit performance or cooling behavior.
- Surroundings and placement: The laptop needs clear intake and exhaust openings. Vent positions differ, and some designs exhaust near the hinge.
- A fan or cooling-system fault: Wear, damage, or another hardware problem can cause persistent noise, poor airflow, or cooling symptoms that basic placement and software checks do not resolve.
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. Start with the safe checks that do not require opening the laptop.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSeveral causes can overlap. A game can create heavy load while a blocked intake makes it harder for the cooling system to move air; a background process can keep the laptop busy after the game closes. That is why it is useful to change one thing at a time. Move the laptop to a clear, hard surface first, compare behavior, then inspect software activity and thermal settings. If you change several settings at once, it becomes harder to tell which change affected the noise.
How to troubleshoot a gaming laptop that overheats or gets loud
-
Check the surface and clear every vent
Move the laptop to a hard, flat surface. Do not use it on a bed, blanket, couch, or pillow when gaming. Find the intake and exhaust openings for your model and make sure they are not pressed against a wall, covered by an object, or blocked by the surface. Since vent placement varies—including designs that exhaust near the hinge—check the model’s manual rather than assuming every opening is on the sides.
A stand or cooling pad is optional. It may help elevate the chassis and improve the space around its vents, but it cannot establish that the laptop’s cooling system is healthy or fix a failed fan or internal blockage. ASUS gives a 5°C to 35°C ambient operating range for its own devices; treat that as ASUS-specific guidance, not a rule for every laptop.
Give the laptop room around its openings rather than pushing the rear or sides tight against a wall, desk divider, or other object. After repositioning it, try the same game or workload and compare the fan behavior. A stand or pad is an airflow aid only if it actually leaves the model’s intake and exhaust paths unobstructed. It is not a guaranteed temperature fix, and there is no supported universal amount by which a cooling pad will lower temperatures.

Check whether another application is keeping the laptop busy
In Windows, open Task Manager and inspect CPU and memory use. If a program you do not need is consuming resources, save your work and close it normally. If a process stays unusually busy, identify what it belongs to before ending it or uninstalling anything; do not assume an unfamiliar process is safe to remove. ASUS, MSI, and Dell all include reducing unnecessary application activity among their troubleshooting advice.

Also compare behavior with the game closed. If fan activity settles, workload is likely contributing. If it remains high at idle, keep investigating airflow, settings, and possible hardware issues.
Look at what is happening now, rather than treating a single brief spike as proof of a problem. An update, scan, or application can temporarily use resources. If high use persists, identify the application before changing it. Close programs through their normal controls and avoid ending unfamiliar system processes. Task Manager is a first check for activity; it does not test the fan, heatsink, or other cooling hardware.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. For a useful comparison, note CPU and memory activity with the game closed and again when the noise occurs. The point is not to reach a particular universal percentage, but to see whether a process is keeping the system busy when you expect it to be idle. If the machine is quiet at idle but loud during the game, the load itself may explain much of the sound. If it remains loud after you close the game and unnecessary applications, continue through the airflow and diagnostic checks.

Choose a supported thermal mode for the task
Open the control utility supplied for your exact laptop and select a mode it supports. The names, availability, and behavior vary by model and software version; do not install or follow instructions for a different product merely because the utility looks similar.
For example, MSI describes Auto as temperature-based fan control, Cooler Boost as full fan speed, and Advanced as custom fan settings on supported models. Full-speed cooling can be conspicuously loud. Custom controls are not available on every model. HP explains a performance-versus-noise tradeoff for supported OMEN and Victus configurations and provides a quiet thermal profile on some supported systems. ASUS directs ROG and TUF gaming-laptop users to Armoury Crate for gaming-specific fan adjustment.
Use a supported preset that fits what you are doing. A quieter profile can trade away performance or cooling behavior; a more aggressive cooling profile may add fan noise. Do not disable thermal protection or apply a universal fan curve based on another laptop’s settings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.Think of these modes as a tradeoff rather than a repair. A maximum-cooling option can make fans noticeably louder because it runs them at full speed; that noise does not necessarily mean the mode has failed. A quiet profile may be more comfortable for light use but may not be the right choice for a demanding game if it limits cooling or performance. Use the maker’s documented choices for your system and compare the same task under each supported setting.
If you are unsure which mode is active, check the laptop maker’s utility and its instructions for your product. Avoid third-party fan-control instructions that assume a different model, and do not set a custom curve simply because another laptop owner uses it. Fan controls, supported profiles, and the conditions under which fans start vary from device to device.
-
Update carefully, using instructions for the exact model
MSI and Dell include updates in their troubleshooting steps. Check the laptop maker’s guidance for Windows, drivers, and BIOS updates that apply to your model. Follow the maker’s exact instructions, especially for BIOS updates: confirm the model and do not start an update while power is unstable or the laptop is shutting down unexpectedly. An update is not a substitute for clearing blocked vents or diagnosing a fan that is not working.

Reduce game load if the laptop becomes unusually warm
Dell recommends reducing game graphics settings as one way to respond when a computer is unusually warm. This can be a useful comparison: lower settings, then see whether fan behavior changes during the same game. Treat that as a way to reduce workload, not proof that the hardware is repaired. If the laptop still overheats, shuts down, or loses performance, continue to diagnostics and service rather than repeatedly lowering settings to mask the symptom.
Keep the comparison simple: use the same game and setting for a similar period, then change a graphics option and observe whether noise or other symptoms change. A quieter result can indicate that reducing load changes the cooling demand. It does not rule out restricted airflow or a hardware fault, particularly if the laptop also behaves abnormally outside the game. Restore your preferred settings if there is no useful change, and do not treat lower settings as a substitute for service when symptoms persist.
-
Clean only as the manufacturer directs
Before any cleaning, shut the laptop down and unplug it. Consult its manual for vent locations and the permitted cleaning method. Manufacturer instructions differ, so do not assume one method is suitable for every device.
ASUS cautions against using a powerful air compressor because excessive pressure can damage fan blades; its guidance recommends canned compressed air at a distance with the can upright. Dell specifies a can and warns against blowers and vacuum cleaners for its computers because of static risk. MSI mentions compressed-air cans or blowers at a distance. Follow the instructions for your own laptop rather than combining these methods or substituting a high-pressure compressor.

Ask the manufacturer or a qualified service provider about the appropriate next step, particularly if the laptop is under warranty.
Do not clean while the laptop is running, and do not improvise with a vacuum cleaner or powerful compressor. The manufacturers’ recommendations are not identical: Dell warns against blowers and vacuums for its computers, while ASUS warns that excessive compressor pressure can damage fan blades. The safe choice is the exact cleaning procedure approved for your model. If you cannot tell where the vents are, or the instructions do not cover the dust you can see, pause and ask support rather than forcing air into the chassis or removing parts.
A compressed-air can is a maintenance item only when the device maker’s instructions permit it. ASUS specifies keeping canned air at a distance and upright. Do not assume those details override another manufacturer’s guidance. Heavy internal dust, a blocked internal heatsink, and access that requires opening the laptop are reasons to ask about qualified service, not invitations to dismantle it as a first step.
-
Run the built-in fan or hardware diagnostics
Use diagnostics provided for the exact brand and model when available. ASUS says to use MyASUS fan diagnostics where available and seek service if they detect an issue. MSI offers fan diagnostics through MSI Center. Dell recommends SupportAssist or ePSA diagnostics and advises contacting support for failed tests. Follow the utility’s on-screen instructions and keep any error or test result to share with support.

Use the diagnostic result alongside what you observed. A failed fan test is a clear reason to contact support; a passed test does not make persistent shutdowns, unusual mechanical sounds, or performance loss irrelevant. Tell support whether there is airflow, when the sound occurs, and whether the symptom remains after you have cleared the vents and closed unnecessary applications.
Choosing the next step: airflow, settings, or service
| What you observe | Most useful next check | What it can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Fans rise during a game and settle afterward | Check vent clearance and compare behavior with the game closed | Whether fan activity tracks workload and placement |
| Fans stay loud at idle or the laptop seems busy with no game open | Inspect CPU and memory use in Windows Task Manager | Whether background activity may be adding load |
| Noise changes when you select a supported thermal mode | Compare the mode’s cooling and noise behavior for your workload | The tradeoff available in that model’s controls |
| Rattling or grinding, no apparent airflow, unexpected shutdowns, or persistent performance loss | Run the maker’s diagnostics and contact support if the issue persists or a test fails | Whether a hardware issue needs qualified diagnosis |
The table is a triage guide, not a way to confirm a specific failed component. A stand, lower game settings, or a quiet profile may change symptoms without resolving a hardware fault.
In practical terms, the lowest-effort checks are placement, vent clearance, and Task Manager. A supported thermal profile is the next useful comparison if you want to understand the noise-versus-cooling tradeoff. Cleaning requires more care because manufacturer methods differ, and internal cleaning can require access that should not be assumed safe for every owner. Diagnostics and qualified service are appropriate when symptoms suggest a fan or cooling fault or when first-line checks have not helped.
There is no universal accessory or setting that fits every case. A stand may help with clearance; a pad may elevate the laptop; a quieter mode may reduce noise; a full-speed mode may add noise while increasing fan operation. None of those choices confirms that the fan is healthy. Choose based on the observed problem and the controls and instructions for the exact laptop.
When to contact support instead of continuing DIY checks
Contact the laptop manufacturer or a qualified service provider if a built-in fan diagnostic fails, a fan does not operate, the laptop repeatedly shuts down or restarts unexpectedly, or overheating and performance loss persist after you have restored clear airflow and checked software load. These symptoms can point beyond a simple placement or settings issue.
Share the exact model, the conditions under which the problem occurs, whether it happens at idle or only under load, any diagnostic result, and any changes you already made. Avoid opening the chassis, replacing thermal paste, or disabling protective controls as a routine response; the guidance here does not establish that those actions are appropriate for your model.
When contacting support, describe the problem in observable terms: which game or workload triggers it, how long it takes to start, whether it continues after closing the game, whether the fan sounds smooth or rattles, and whether you can feel airflow at the intended exhaust. Include any MyASUS, MSI Center, SupportAssist, or ePSA result that applies. This information can help support decide whether further tests or service are needed without guessing at a failed part.
Repair effort and cost depend on the model, fault, warranty status, and service provider; there is no single supported price for a fan or cooling-system repair. Check warranty coverage and request an estimate from the manufacturer or qualified provider before authorizing work. Do not assume a cooling pad or a can of air is a cheaper substitute for a repair if diagnostics fail or the fan is not operating.

Why is my gaming laptop fan so loud when I play games?
A game can keep the CPU and GPU busy, raising their temperatures and prompting the cooling system to increase fan speed. This may be normal if the sound tracks the game and settles afterward. Make sure the vents are clear and the laptop is on a hard, flat surface; persistent noise at idle, rattling, grinding, or shutdowns merit further checks.

How do I stop my gaming laptop from overheating?
Start with airflow: move it off soft surfaces and clear the model’s intake and exhaust openings. Check Task Manager for unnecessary background activity, use a supported thermal mode, and follow the maker’s instructions for updates and cleaning. If it still overheats, shuts down, loses performance, or fails a fan diagnostic, contact support rather than opening it or disabling protections.
Is it normal for a gaming laptop to get hot while gaming?
It can be normal for a laptop to warm up during a sustained game, and fan behavior varies by model and workload. There is no universal temperature cutoff that applies to every gaming laptop. Compare the symptom with your model’s guidance, and take persistent overheating, unexpected shutdowns, or performance loss seriously.
Should I use a cooling pad or laptop stand?
A stand or cooling pad is optional and may help elevate the chassis or improve clearance around vents. Check that it does not block your laptop’s intake or exhaust. It cannot be relied on to fix a failed fan, internal blockage, or other hardware fault, and no universal temperature reduction is established for every laptop.

Can I use compressed air to clean my laptop vents?
Only if the laptop maker’s instructions allow it, and follow those instructions for your exact model. Shut down and unplug first. Guidance differs: ASUS recommends canned air at a distance with the can upright and cautions against powerful compressors; Dell warns against blowers and vacuums for its computers; MSI’s advice also varies by method. If cleaning requires opening the chassis or the method is unclear, ask support.
How much does it cost to fix an overheating gaming laptop?
The cost depends on the model, what has failed, warranty coverage, and the service provider. Check warranty terms and ask the manufacturer or qualified service provider for an estimate before approving repair. Do not assume that a cleaning accessory will fix a failed fan or internal cooling problem.
