Approval and public availability are separate steps, and review-time averages are not guarantees.
What the App Store lifecycle involves
Apple’s standard App Store route has distinct preparation, review, and release stages. App Store Connect is the operational hub for managing the app record, uploading and selecting builds, submitting versions, setting availability, and reviewing post-launch data. Apple reviews updates as well as first releases; a new version is not automatically published just because the original app was approved. See Apple’s App Store Connect workflow and App Review documentation.

The public listing is only one part of a submission. Apple needs a working app to evaluate, complete metadata, and enough information to access and understand the app’s behavior. A reviewer may need account credentials, instructions, or special settings if features are not immediately available. Treat those as part of the deliverable, not as details to add after review begins.

Those figures describe the platform’s potential reach, not a promise that every app will appear in all storefronts or be translated into every language. Availability and listing details depend on the developer’s selections and circumstances.

How to prepare a submission that can be reviewed
Check the app against Apple’s rules
Read Apple’s App Review Guidelines while planning the app, rather than waiting until the build is finished. A mismatch between the app’s actual behavior and what the listing or review notes describe can make evaluation harder. Verify the version you plan to submit on current software, exercise its important flows, and remove unfinished or placeholder content.
Apple identifies crashes, placeholder content, broken links, and incomplete information among common issues associated with App Completeness. It says over 40% of unresolved issues relate to Guideline 2.1, App Completeness. That is Apple’s aggregate figure, not a prediction that any particular submission will be rejected. The practical lesson is to make the app behave as described and provide a complete, usable submission.
Complete the listing and reviewer information
- Complete the required metadata for the app version and its listing.
- Provide a working support link and privacy-policy link; Apple says all apps need both.
- Include valid account credentials or review instructions when a reviewer needs them to reach features.
- Explain any special settings or steps needed to evaluate functionality that is not apparent on first launch.
- Check links and remove placeholder text before submitting.
These checks reduce avoidable friction, but they do not guarantee approval. Apple makes the decision against its guidelines, and a complete submission can still raise substantive policy questions.

How to upload and select a build
The app record and uploaded binary have to line up: the store listing describes the version, and the selected build is what Apple reviews. Apple’s Xcode distribution documentation describes validating an archive and uploading it to App Store Connect. App Store Connect is then used to manage the record and select a build for a version.
- Prepare and validate the archive in Xcode. Resolve validation problems before uploading. Validation is a check of the archive, not App Review approval.
- Upload the build to App Store Connect. Use the app’s record to manage the uploaded build and version.
- Select the build for the app version. Confirm that the chosen build is the one intended for review and that the associated metadata and reviewer information are ready.
- Add the version to a draft submission. Review the submission contents before sending them to Apple.
Apple’s overview of submitting for review explains the submission flow. A submission can contain an app version and eligible related items. If items are bundled in one submission, all of them must be accepted for that submission to complete; bundling therefore ties their review outcomes together.
How to beta-test an app with TestFlight
TestFlight is Apple’s pre-release distribution and feedback system. Apple describes it as a way to distribute beta builds, manage testers, and collect feedback. It lets an indie developer put a build in front of testers before public release, then use their reports and observed build information to find issues while the app is still in testing. The TestFlight overview documents its limits and operation.

Internal and external testing
| Testing route | Who can test | Review and scale | Feedback and monitoring |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal | App Store Connect users who have access to the app’s content | Up to 100 internal testers, according to Apple | Testers can send feedback through TestFlight; developers can track build status, sessions, and crashes |
| External | Invitees outside the internal App Store Connect user group | Up to 10,000 external testers, according to Apple. External testing may require review. | Testers can send feedback through TestFlight; developers can track build status, sessions, and crashes |
The tester caps are maximums, not a recommended audience size or a guarantee that a build will be approved for external testing. Apple says the first build added to a group is sent to App Review, and external builds may require review. Plan time for that review rather than treating an invitation as immediate access for every tester.
Set up a beta and gather usable feedback
- Upload a beta build to App Store Connect.
- Provide the beta test information Apple requests. Its test-information guide covers this step.
- Organize testers into an internal or external group, based on who needs access and the scale of the test.
- For the first build added to a group, allow for the App Review step Apple documents; check the build’s status in App Store Connect.
- Ask testers to exercise the app’s meaningful flows and report issues through TestFlight. Use the available build status, session, and crash information to help triage problems.
Each TestFlight build can be tested for up to 90 days. A long-running beta therefore needs a plan for replacing builds and keeping testers on a current version; a build’s testing window is not an indefinite distribution channel.
What happens during App Review
Once the build and metadata are ready, the developer adds the version to a draft submission and explicitly submits that draft in App Store Connect. The status changes to “In Review” when Apple begins reviewing it. Apple says it reviews apps, app updates, app bundles, in-app purchases, and in-app events submitted to App Store Connect. Review is a recurring part of operating an app, not a one-time gate at launch.

Apple reports that 90% of submissions are reviewed in less than 24 hours, according to its App Review page accessed in 2026. This is an average, not a service guarantee or a reliable deadline for an individual app. A submission can take longer, so avoid scheduling a launch around the assumption that review will finish within a fixed period.
If Apple raises an issue
- Read the message in App Store Connect and identify the guideline or requirement Apple cites.
- Compare the concern with the app’s actual behavior, listing, and review instructions. Correct the problem where needed.
- Reply to App Review through App Store Connect if clarification is useful, then submit the corrected version as directed.
- If you believe Apple misunderstood the app’s concept or the process was unfair, Apple provides an appeal route to the App Review Board.
For bug-fix updates, Apple says it may be possible to address additional issues in the next submission when no legal or safety concerns are involved. That is a limited possibility, not a reason to leave known problems unaddressed or assume every issue can wait.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow an approved app becomes available
Approval does not itself determine the exact moment customers see the version. After review, configure pricing and availability and choose a release method. Apple documents manual, automatic, and phased release options in its publishing overview.
Best Value
| Release choice | Control over timing | Initial reach and monitoring |
|---|---|---|
| Manual release | The developer chooses when to release the approved version. | Apple documents it as a release option; the cited guidance does not establish a particular initial rollout size or special monitoring behavior. |
| Automatic release | The approved version is released automatically rather than waiting for a manual release action. | Apple documents it as a release option; no particular initial rollout size is stated in the cited guidance. |
| Phased release | Available for app updates; Apple documents a seven-day phased release period. | The update is phased over seven days. Phasing should not be treated as a guarantee of rollback or of preventing all user impact. |
Apple says an approved app may take up to 24 hours to appear in the store. Treat that as a possible delay after approval, distinct from review time. The exact release experience depends on the chosen option and the app’s availability settings.
How to submit an update after launch
An update follows the same basic submission logic as an initial version: prepare the changed app, upload or select its new build, complete the version information, and send it through App Review. Updates are reviewed too, so account for review and release time in maintenance planning. For a staged update, Apple offers the seven-day phased release option described above.
After release, App Store Connect provides app analytics, sales and trends, financial reports, and a way to respond to user reviews. These tools can help developers understand how a release is performing and what users report. They do not replace testing: a crash or broken flow found after launch still needs a fix and a subsequent reviewed update.

Geography and distribution-route limits
This article describes the standard Apple App Store route, not every possible iOS distribution arrangement. Apple notes that developers seeking alternative marketplaces or alternative payment options in the European Union need to review and sign an addendum to the Apple Developer Program License Agreement. Eligibility, costs, operational requirements, and country-by-country rules are not covered by the standard workflow described here; check Apple’s current agreements and regional documentation before relying on an alternative route.
Do not confuse the macOS notarized distribution option mentioned in Apple’s Xcode documentation with an equivalent way to distribute an iOS app outside the App Store. That reference concerns macOS. For a typical indie iOS release, the supported workflow described here is build preparation, beta testing where useful, App Review, release selection, and reviewed updates through App Store Connect.
