Start with the least destructive checks: look at Epic Games Server Status and your platform’s service status, then use the platform’s official update command. If services are operating, restart Fortnite, the launcher or console, and your router; use a wired connection where possible. Next clear the relevant cache, verify or repair local files, check free storage, and only then reinstall. A server outage, exhausted storage, damaged files, or a network problem each needs a different fix, so repeatedly restarting the same download is rarely useful.
Identify what is actually failing
Fortnite update problems usually fall into one of four patterns. The remedy depends on which pattern you see:

On PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, Epic documents “Checking for Updates” as a possible result of miscommunication with Epic’s servers. That means a local restart cannot resolve every occurrence. Check the service status before changing settings or deleting files.

Do these checks before changing anything
- Check service status. Open Epic Games Server Status and the status page for PlayStation Network, Xbox services, or Nintendo services, depending on your device. If an outage or incident affects login, matchmaking, or downloads, wait for the service to recover instead of repeatedly starting the update.
- Close Fortnite completely. Exit the game rather than leaving it suspended in the background. On PC, also close the Epic Games Launcher before reopening it.
- Restart the device. A normal restart can release a locked update process and refresh the platform’s network session.
- Restart the modem or router. Unplug it, wait for it to finish shutting down, reconnect it, and allow the connection to return before launching Fortnite.
- Use the official update control. The exact path differs by platform; the commands are listed below.
- Check free storage. An update may need temporary working space in addition to the displayed download size. Epic does not publish one universal free-space number for every Fortnite update, so leave substantially more room than the download alone requires.
Do not delete the game or saved data during this initial triage. Cache clearing, file verification, and reinstalling are progressively more disruptive and should follow status, restart, and storage checks.

Use the correct update command

If the command produces no update, confirm that you are signed into the account that owns the installation and that the device has a working internet connection. Do not assume that a stalled progress bar means the same thing as a missing update.
Fix Fortnite updates on PC
1. Let the Epic Games Launcher start the update
Open the Epic Games Launcher and start Fortnite from your Library. Epic says an available update begins automatically. If the launcher displays an error, copy the exact wording or code; searching that exact message in Epic Help is more useful than searching for “Fortnite update” generally.
2. Confirm requirements and storage
Check that the computer meets Fortnite’s current minimum requirements and that the target drive has enough free space for both the download and temporary installation files. If the launcher reports a disk or write error, free space first and retry. An update that stops at the same percentage can be a local-drive problem rather than a server problem.
3. Verify the game files
Use the launcher’s Fortnite management options to run its file-verification or integrity check. The launcher compares installed files with the expected set and replaces damaged or missing data. This is safer than deleting the installation and should be attempted before a reinstall.

4. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
Exit the launcher completely, including its background process, then clear its cache using Epic’s documented PC troubleshooting procedure. Reopen the launcher and try the update again. A stale launcher cache can prevent metadata or update checks from completing even when the network is working.
5. Apply the remaining PC repairs only if needed
- Update the computer’s video drivers and restart.
- Run the Epic Games Launcher with administrator privileges, then retry the update.
- Temporarily close background applications that consume bandwidth, disk access, or security scanning resources.
- Check the drive for errors and confirm that the drive is healthy and writable.
- Try installing or moving Fortnite to a different drive if the original drive reports errors or has unreliable free space.
- Reinstall the launcher and Fortnite only after verification and cache clearing fail.
- As a final local-file measure, follow Epic’s instructions for removing the FortniteGame folder, then reinstall. This removes local game data, so use it only when earlier repairs have failed and you are prepared to download the game again.
Do not skip directly to folder deletion because an update is slow. Verification and cache clearing preserve more of the existing installation and normally require less bandwidth.
Fix a stuck Fortnite update on PlayStation
1. Check manually
From the home screen, open Library > Fortnite, press Options, and choose Check for Update. If the console finds a package, allow the download to finish before launching the game.

- Check Epic Games Server Status and PlayStation Network status.
- Close Fortnite rather than leaving it suspended.
- Reset the modem or router, then wait for the internet connection to return.
- Restore licenses from the PlayStation account settings if the update or game entitlement appears inconsistent.
- Reconnect using Wi-Fi or LAN. Epic’s PlayStation guidance states: “LAN/wired connection is highly recommended.” If your setup allows it, try a wired LAN connection with a Cat6 Ethernet cable.
- If the check still hangs, configure manual DNS as 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, use an MTU of 1500, save the connection, and restart the console.
DNS and MTU changes are connection troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed speed upgrades. Record your previous settings so you can restore them if another service behaves differently.

3. Clear cache, power-cycle, then reinstall
If the status pages are normal and the network steps do not help, clear the PlayStation cache using the console’s supported safe-mode procedure, then power-cycle the console. If Fortnite still cannot update, reinstall it and contact PlayStation support. Reinstalling is more disruptive because it removes the local game package and requires a complete download.
Fix Fortnite updates on Xbox
1. Start the update from My Games & Apps
Press the Xbox button, open My Games & Apps > See All > Games, select Fortnite, and choose Update when that option appears. Keep the console connected until the queue completes.
2. Clear platform state
For a stuck or failed update, check Xbox’s known-issues information, clear the Xbox cache using the supported power procedure, and power-cycle the console. Then repeat the update command. Close other games and apps so they are not holding network or storage resources.
3. Handle exhausted storage
If the console reports that it ran out of space, clear the cache and delete unused games or apps. Epic specifically recommends this sequence for console installations or updates that run out of disk space. Do not delete Fortnite’s saved data unless support instructs you to; removing an unused game is the safer way to create room.

4. Reinstall only after the checks
If the service is available, storage is sufficient, the cache is cleared, and the update still fails, reinstall Fortnite. Contact Xbox support if other games also fail to update, because that pattern points to a platform or storage problem rather than Fortnite alone.
Fix Fortnite updates on Nintendo Switch
1. Run the built-in software check
Connect the Switch to the internet, highlight Fortnite, press + or −, select Software Update, and choose Via the Internet. Leave the console connected while it checks and downloads.
2. Resolve “Checking for Updates”
- Check Epic Games Server Status and Nintendo’s service status.
- Close Fortnite fully.
- Follow Nintendo’s save-data guidance before making any reset or deletion choice.
- Set manual DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 in the Switch internet connection settings.
- Run the Switch connection test, restart the console, and relaunch Fortnite.
The DNS values are the same ones Epic documents for this Nintendo troubleshooting path. If the check remains stuck, clear the Switch cache, reinstall Fortnite, and contact Nintendo support if the problem persists.

Connect the phone or tablet to a stable internet connection, open the Epic Games Launcher app, select Fortnite, and press Update. On Android, use Google Play’s standard app-update instructions when the installation came from Google Play. Keep the device plugged in if the download is large, disable any battery mode that pauses background downloads, and make sure internal storage is available.

Mobile update controls and availability can vary by operating system and installation source. If the update button is absent, confirm that you are using the same store or Epic installation route that originally installed Fortnite; switching sources mid-update can create a separate installation rather than repair the existing one.
Speed up a slow or apparently frozen download
Separate slow throughput from no progress
A download that advances slowly is a network-throughput issue until proven otherwise. A download that remains on “Checking for Updates” before any data transfers is usually an update-check, service, cache, or DNS issue. Watch the transfer rate for several minutes instead of judging by a single moment, because rates can drop while the launcher verifies or unpacks files.
Improve the connection
- Use wired LAN when practical; Epic calls it highly recommended for PlayStation troubleshooting.
- Pause video streaming, cloud backups, other game downloads, and large uploads on the same connection.
- Move closer to the Wi-Fi access point or use a less congested band if a wired connection is impossible.
- Restart the router and console or PC to obtain a fresh network session.
- Test another network only as a diagnostic. A phone hotspot may have data limits and is not automatically a good long-term solution for a large game update.
Changing DNS can help a device reach update services when name resolution is failing, but it cannot repair an Epic outage or create additional bandwidth. Likewise, a cable can stabilize the link but cannot make a server-side incident download faster.

Check for local bottlenecks
On PC, close disk-intensive applications and verify that the destination drive is not reporting errors. On consoles, close suspended games and check free storage. Some update stages write and verify files rather than download them, so the network indicator may pause while the device is working locally.
Storage, cache, and reinstall decisions

Cache clearing is not the same as deleting saved progress. Follow each platform’s instructions carefully and preserve save data when prompted. Reinstalling Fortnite should be the last routine step because it consumes the most time and bandwidth.
When to escalate
Contact Epic Games Support with the platform, exact error text, current status-page result, and the steps already attempted when the problem affects only Fortnite. Contact the platform manufacturer when multiple games or system downloads fail, the console cannot maintain an internet connection, storage errors continue, or reinstalling does not complete.
- Epic or platform outage: wait for the incident to clear; local repairs cannot restore a remote service.
- Only Fortnite fails on PC: provide the launcher error and use file verification and cache clearing before reinstalling.
- Every download fails: investigate the router, DNS, platform service, account, or drive rather than repeatedly reinstalling Fortnite.
- Storage warnings return: free additional space and check the drive or console storage health.
Prevent the next failed update
- Keep enough free space for temporary update files, not just the advertised download.
- Install updates over a stable connection and avoid starting them while other devices are saturating the network.
- Use the platform’s official update command instead of launching an old shortcut repeatedly.
- Close Fortnite cleanly before shutting down the device so the next update check starts from a consistent state.
- On PC, keep the launcher and graphics drivers current and monitor the health of the installation drive.
- Note any error code before clearing data; the code can distinguish a service, storage, permission, or file-integrity problem.
The practical order is simple: verify service status, use the correct update command, restart the network and device, improve the connection, clear cache or verify files, resolve storage, and reinstall only when the earlier steps fail.
