Do not pay again while the first transaction is pending or the debit is unexplained. A failed payment with no debit can usually be retried after confirmation; a debit without service requires a support ticket and the refund clock depends on the payment rail and failure type.
Do these checks before trying to pay again
- Open Freecharge. Go to My Transactions and open the affected payment. Record the exact status, order or transaction ID, amount, date, biller or merchant, and the mobile number or account number entered.
- Check the payment source. Review the bank, card or UPI app statement for a debit, reversal or pending hold. A Freecharge status and a bank status can update at different times, so compare the timestamps and reference numbers.
- Hold off on a duplicate payment. Do not submit the same recharge or bill again while the original transaction is pending or while a debit has not been reconciled. Paying twice can create a second, separate transaction that support must investigate.
- Capture evidence. Save a screenshot of the status, the statement entry and any reference ID. Keep the original transaction ID even if the status later changes.
- Choose the correct path. A failed status with no debit is normally a retry decision. A failed or reversed status with a debit, or a successful bank debit where the service is missing, is a refund or service-delivery case.
What each Freecharge status means
Failed and no money was debited
The payment did not complete and there is no amount to recover. Confirm both the failed status in My Transactions and the absence of a debit in your bank or UPI statement. Once those checks agree, you can retry using the correct biller details. Retain the screenshot or reference ID in case the status changes after you retry. Freecharge offers in-app support and customer email if the transaction later appears inconsistent.

Failed or reversed after a debit
This is the principal refund case. The service was not delivered even though your card, bank account or prepaid payment instrument was charged. For a prepaid recharge or bill payment, Freecharge’s terms instruct you to contact support when the service has not been delivered within the stated service window. Include the transaction information requested in the terms so that support can match the debit to the order.
For covered UPI or card-not-present failures where the account was debited but the payment was not confirmed, Freecharge’s grievance policy sets an automatic-reversal target and a compensation rule. The exact clocks are listed below; the applicable regulatory framework and payment rail determine whether that policy applies.

Pending
Pending means the outcome has not yet been confirmed. Check the payment statement for an actual debit, but do not assume that a debit proves the biller received the money. Wait for reconciliation rather than immediately paying again. If the transaction later changes to failed or reversed after a debit, use the failed-with-debit workflow and provide the original reference ID.
Successful at the bank but the recharge or bill is missing
Treat this as a service-delivery or biller dispute, not as permission to create a second payment. Verify the biller account or mobile number, check the biller’s own statement or customer portal, and then contact Freecharge with the transaction details. Freecharge notes that bill-payment settlement can depend on the biller, so the transaction reference ID is essential for tracing the settlement.
Refund and reversal clocks
Different payment situations use different clocks. “T” in the policy row below means the transaction day, not the day you open a complaint.

| Failed prepaid recharge or bill payment; service not delivered | Contact Freecharge after the service has not arrived within the initial service window and provide the required transaction details. | After investigation confirms that money was charged and the service was not delivered, Freecharge’s terms (current page accessed 2026) say the amount is refunded to the original source within 21 working days from receipt of your email. |
| UPI or card-not-present debit with no confirmation | Open a support case and keep the original reference ID. | Freecharge Payment Gateway’s grievance policy (crawled 2026) lists automatic reversal by T+5. It lists ₹100 per day beyond T+5 as compensation for covered cases, subject to the applicable regulatory framework. |
| UPI transaction failed but the bank account was debited | Contact the bank’s customer support if the refund has not arrived promptly. | NPCI’s UPI FAQ says to contact the bank when the refund has not arrived within one hour. |
| Merchant-initiated refund | Confirm that the merchant has actually initiated the refund and retain its reference. | Freecharge’s grievance policy says it typically takes 3–10 business days to reflect. |
These are not interchangeable guarantees. A merchant refund, a payment-gateway auto-reversal and a Freecharge investigation refund can begin on different dates and may appear in different statement descriptions.
Use the workflow for your payment rail
UPI
Record the UPI transaction ID or bank reference shown in the statement, along with the Freecharge order ID. If the UPI payment is failed and the account was debited, NPCI’s first escalation is your bank’s customer support when the refund has not arrived within one hour. You should also retain a Freecharge ticket if the transaction appears in My Transactions, because Freecharge may need to reconcile its order with the bank’s UPI record.
If the payment remains pending, wait for the outcome rather than initiating another UPI collect request or QR payment for the same bill. Once the status becomes failed or reversed, send the original reference ID and debit proof to Freecharge.
Card or card-not-present payment
Check whether the card entry is a completed debit, a reversed entry or only a temporary authorization. Send the statement entry or card-issuer reference to Freecharge without exposing the full card number, CVV or one-time password. For a covered card-not-present debit without confirmation, use the reversal and compensation clock in the table. Your card issuer may display the credit under a separate refund line, so compare the amount and date rather than searching only for the original merchant name.

Wallet or prepaid instrument
For a prepaid recharge or bill payment, Freecharge’s terms require you to contact support when the amount was charged but the service was not delivered within the applicable service window. The investigation refund, when the failure is confirmed, goes back to the original source. State whether the source was a wallet or another prepaid instrument and include the account or mobile number used for the biller.
How to contact Freecharge with a complete case
In the app
Open Profile → Help & Support, or select the support option attached to the relevant transaction. Starting from the transaction helps attach the order ID and status to the case.
By email
Email [email protected] for customer support. Use a subject such as “Failed payment debited — order ID [your ID]” and put the key facts in the first paragraph. Freecharge’s terms specifically ask customers to include the biller name, account number or mobile number, payment value, transaction date and order number.
By phone
The published helpline is +91 97735 79100, Monday through Saturday, 10 AM–7 PM. A phone conversation does not replace written evidence: ask for or quote the existing ticket number so the case remains traceable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInformation to include
- Freecharge order or transaction ID and any UPI, bank or card reference.
- Exact amount and transaction date and time.
- Biller or merchant name.
- Mobile number or account number used for the recharge or bill.
- The exact status shown in My Transactions: failed, reversed, pending or successful.
- Proof of debit or reversal from the bank, card or UPI statement.
- Whether the recharge, bill credit or other service was delivered.
Do not send your UPI PIN, card CVV, one-time password or full card number. Support needs transaction identifiers and debit evidence, not authentication secrets.
What happens after you open a ticket
Freecharge’s terms state that a ticketed customer complaint has a 10-business-day resolution period. That period excludes delays attributable to banks, networks, regulators or missing information from the customer. Respond promptly if support asks for a statement or clarification; an incomplete case can delay the investigation.
Keep the ticket number and the date of every reply. If the published window passes without a resolution, reply on the same ticket rather than opening unrelated duplicate cases. Freecharge’s grievance matrix provides a 5-business-day response target for escalation to the designated grievance officer. If that does not resolve the case, escalate to the nodal officer, also with a 5-business-day response target. Include the complete earlier correspondence and explain exactly which refund or service outcome is still missing.

How to read conflicting records
It is common for three records to disagree temporarily: Freecharge’s order page, the bank or card ledger, and the biller’s account. Use the transaction ID and amount to link them rather than relying on the merchant name alone. A pending bank authorization may disappear without a separate credit; a completed debit may later receive a reversal line; and a biller may post a payment after Freecharge has already changed the order status. Note each timestamp and attach the relevant screen when you write to support.

For UPI, save both the UPI transaction ID and the bank’s reference or RRN if shown. For a wallet or prepaid balance, record the balance before and after the attempt. These details help support decide whether the issue is an authorization hold, an auto-reversal, a merchant refund or a service-delivery dispute.
Common mistakes that delay a refund
- Retrying while pending: a second payment can settle even if the first later succeeds, leaving two valid charges.
- Opening multiple tickets: duplicate cases split the evidence and can slow the 10-business-day review.
- Sending incomplete identifiers: an amount without an order ID, date or biller account is difficult to trace.
- Waiting for the wrong clock: the one-hour NPCI bank-contact trigger, T+5 auto-reversal target, 3–10 business-day merchant refund and 21-working-day investigation refund apply to different situations.
- Sharing secrets: Freecharge does not need your PIN, CVV or OTP to locate a transaction.
- Calling an intentional mistake a failure: wrong-recipient or wrong-amount payments are excluded from Freecharge’s reversal promise.
When Freecharge will not reverse a payment
Freecharge’s terms distinguish a technical failure from a customer-authorized mistake. They state: “Freecharge will not reimburse You or reverse a payment that You have erroneously made.” A payment sent to the wrong recipient, wrong biller, wrong account or wrong amount is therefore not the same as a failed transaction with an unexplained debit. Contact the recipient or biller for an erroneous payment, while still giving Freecharge the transaction reference so the destination can be identified. Do not describe an intentional payment error as a technical failure.
Troubleshooting common outcomes
The app says failed, but the bank still shows a debit
Save both screens and check whether the bank entry is completed, pending or already reversed. Do not retry. Open Freecharge support with the order ID, bank reference and debit proof. If it was a UPI debit, contact the bank under the NPCI failed-debit process as well.
The app says reversed, but the money is not visible
Look for a separate credit or reversal line in the original payment account, not only for a changed version of the debit line. Verify the posting date and amount, then send the statement to Freecharge if the applicable clock has passed. Keep the original order ID; a reversal status alone does not tell support which account entry is missing.
The biller says unpaid while Freecharge says successful
Confirm the account or mobile number character by character and ask the biller to search using its own reference number. Give Freecharge the biller’s response and the original transaction reference. Because settlement can depend on the biller, both sides may need to trace the same payment rather than issuing a new one.
The payment is still pending and the bill is due
Check whether the biller offers a grace period or late-payment protection, but do not create a duplicate Freecharge transaction solely because the due date is close. If you must make a separate payment to avoid service interruption, document that decision and retain both transaction records so any later reconciliation is clear.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get a refund for a failed Freecharge recharge?
First confirm the failed status and debit in My Transactions and your payment statement. If the recharge was not delivered, contact Freecharge through Profile → Help & Support or [email protected] with the biller, mobile number, amount, date and order ID. For a confirmed failed prepaid payment, the terms state that the refund goes to the original source within 21 working days from receipt of the email.
Freecharge payment failed but money was deducted. Should I pay again?
No. Do not duplicate the payment while the debit is unresolved. Save the order and bank references, contact Freecharge, and for a UPI debit contact your bank if the refund has not arrived within one hour, as advised by NPCI.
Freecharge says reversed—when will I get my money back?
Look for a separate reversal or credit entry in the same account. A covered UPI or card-not-present debit has a Freecharge auto-reversal target of T+5, with ₹100 per day beyond T+5 listed for applicable cases. A merchant-initiated refund typically takes 3–10 business days to reflect.
What if Freecharge shows successful but the biller has not credited my account?
Verify the account or mobile number and ask the biller to search by its reference number. Then open a Freecharge service-delivery case with both references. Do not make another payment until you understand whether the first one is awaiting biller settlement.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can Freecharge reverse a payment sent to the wrong account?
Freecharge’s terms say it will not reimburse or reverse a payment you erroneously made. Contact the recipient or biller to seek recovery, and provide Freecharge the transaction reference so the destination can be identified.
Best Value
How long does Freecharge support take to resolve a complaint?
The terms give a ticketed complaint a 10-business-day resolution period, excluding delays caused by banks, networks, regulators or missing information. If unresolved, use the ticket number to escalate to the designated grievance officer and then the nodal officer; each escalation has a five-business-day response target.
A compact decision checklist
- No debit + failed: confirm the failed status, save the reference, then retry if the biller details are correct.
- Debit + failed or reversed: do not retry; open Freecharge support and provide debit proof.
- Debit + pending: wait for reconciliation and monitor the statement; escalate only with the original reference if it becomes failed or remains unresolved.
- Bank successful + service missing: verify the biller account, check the biller’s records and raise a service-delivery dispute with Freecharge.
- Wrong recipient or wrong amount entered: pursue the recipient or biller; Freecharge’s terms exclude erroneous payments from reimbursement or reversal.
The safest resolution comes from matching one Freecharge order to one payment-statement entry, using the correct payment-rail clock and keeping every escalation on the original ticket.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if Freecharge failed but my bank account was debited?
Do not retry. Save the Freecharge order ID and bank reference, raise a support ticket with debit proof, and contact your bank for a UPI failed-debit case if the refund has not arrived within one hour.
When will a reversed Freecharge payment be refunded?
Check the original account for a separate credit. Covered UPI or card-not-present debits have a T+5 auto-reversal target; merchant refunds typically reflect in 3–10 business days.
How do I contact Freecharge about a missing refund?
Use Profile → Help & Support or email [email protected]. Include the biller, account or mobile number, amount, date, status, order ID and payment-statement evidence.
Will Freecharge reverse a payment made to the wrong account?
No. Its terms exclude payments you erroneously made. Contact the recipient or biller and keep the transaction reference.
The Bottom Line
Match the Freecharge status to your bank, card or UPI statement before paying again. No debit usually means you can retry after confirmation; a debit without service requires a documented support case. Use the clock for your exact rail—one hour for NPCI bank contact on a failed UPI debit, T+5 for covered auto-reversal, 3–10 business days for a merchant refund, or 21 working days after Freecharge receives an investigation email—and escalate on the original ticket if it expires.
