If an ICICI Bank UPI payment is pending, do not pay again immediately. Open iMobile, check UPI Payments > History, note the displayed status and reason, and allow up to 48 hours for the bank to post a final result. A failed payment that debited your account should be refunded; if the refund window expires, raise an in-app dispute, call ICICI on 1800 1080, and escalate to chargeback or NPCI when necessary.
Choose the next action from the transaction status
Your safest next step depends on four facts: the status shown by ICICI, whether your account was debited, how long ago you paid, and whether the payment was to a person or a merchant.

| What iMobile shows | Was your account debited? | What to do now |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | Either | Do not retry. Wait for the bank’s final status for up to 48 hours, then follow the result shown in History. |
| Failed | No | Read the failure reason, correct the issue, and retry only after confirming that no debit occurred. |
| Failed | Yes | Check for a refund. If it does not arrive within the applicable ICICI window, raise a dispute in iMobile. |
| Successful | Yes | Ask the recipient or merchant to check its account using the UPI transaction reference; do not send a second payment until the first result is verified. |
Check the real status and failure reason in iMobile
Notifications, merchant screens and text messages can lag behind the bank’s ledger. Use the transaction record in ICICI’s app as your starting point.
- Open iMobile and authenticate normally.
- Go to UPI Payments > History.
- Open the relevant payment and record its status, failure reason, date, time, amount, payee or merchant, and the UPI transaction ID or RRN.
- Compare the record with your account balance and statement to establish whether the amount was actually debited.
ICICI identifies network or bank technical problems, an incorrect UPI PIN, insufficient funds, transaction-limit exhaustion, security checks and other account conditions as common causes. The reason displayed for your particular payment determines whether a retry is sensible.

When an ICICI UPI payment is pending
A pending entry means the final result has not reached the bank’s records yet. ICICI’s payer FAQ says to wait up to 48 hours for the bank to update the payment to successful or failed. NPCI’s FAQ similarly says a pending debit may reach the beneficiary within 48 hours after settlement.
During that period, keep the original transaction details and avoid initiating another payment for the same bill or recipient. A second attempt can create two debits if the first one later settles. Check the History entry rather than relying on a merchant’s “payment failed” page.
After the 48-hour period
- If the entry changes to successful, confirm with the recipient or merchant before taking any further action.
- If it changes to failed and your account was debited, use the refund and dispute process below.
- If it remains unresolved or the amount is missing, contact ICICI with the UPI ID/RRN and timestamp and ask the bank to trace the transaction.
When the payment is marked failed
First determine whether the debit happened. A failed status without a debit normally requires correcting the stated cause before trying again. Common checks include:
- Enter the correct UPI PIN; never disclose it to a caller, merchant or support agent.
- Ensure the linked ICICI account has enough available balance, not merely a displayed ledger balance affected by another hold.
- Check whether you have reached a bank, account or UPI transaction limit.
- Retry later if the reason indicates a network or bank technical issue.
- Complete any legitimate security or account-verification step shown in iMobile.
If the account was debited despite the failed status, do not treat the payment as permanently lost. Capture the record and start the refund-tracking process instead of making repeated retries.
Failed payment but money was debited: request a dispute
ICICI’s in-app route for an unresolved debit is:
- Open iMobile.
- Select UPI Payments > Support.
- Tap Raise a dispute.
- Choose Accounts and Credit Card.
- Select the relevant account and transaction, then submit the requested details.
Use the exact transaction shown in History. Include the UPI transaction ID/RRN, status, date and time, amount, receiver or merchant details, and screenshots showing the debit and the failed result. Save the complaint or reference number so you can quote it on a later call.

How long an ICICI UPI refund can take
ICICI publishes two different timing statements in separate parts of its UPI FAQs. They should not be collapsed into one guaranteed deadline.
| Situation or FAQ section | Published timing | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Payer FAQ: a payment becomes failed | Refund within 3–5 days from the payment date | Use this as the payer-facing window after the pending result changes to failed. |
| Dispute FAQ: failed-payment refund | Credit within 2–3 days | This is a separate statement attached to the dispute process. |
| Dispute FAQ: pending amount | Credit within 2–3 days | Continue to follow the live status in iMobile rather than assuming this is a universal deadline. |
| NPCI FAQ: failed debit | Contact the bank if the refund is not received within one hour | NPCI’s guidance is more urgent; use ICICI’s transaction record and support channels to reconcile any delay. |
The different statements reflect different FAQ contexts, not a promise that every transaction will settle in the shortest period. If the applicable period shown by ICICI has passed, raise the dispute and call the bank rather than waiting indefinitely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCall ICICI when the refund is overdue
Call ICICI customer care at 1800 1080 when the amount has not returned after the relevant window, the in-app dispute fails, or the status and account statement conflict. Have these details ready:
- UPI transaction ID or 12-digit RRN
- Exact date and time, including the time zone shown by the app
- Amount and currency
- Sender account and receiver UPI ID, name or merchant information
- Status and failure reason displayed in iMobile
- Screenshot of the debit, payment record and any dispute reference
Ask the agent to confirm whether the transaction is pending at the bank, reversed, credited to the beneficiary, or eligible for a chargeback. Record the call reference and the promised next step.
If a payment says successful but the recipient has not received it
Do not send another payment just because a merchant page or recipient says “not received.” Verify the final status in iMobile and give the recipient or merchant the UPI transaction reference so its bank can search for the credit. ICICI’s FAQ directs wrong-account situations toward seeking a refund from the receiver and using bank support where required.

For a person-to-person transfer, ask the recipient to check the credited account and transaction history rather than only an SMS alert. For a merchant payment, ask the merchant to check its acquiring account or payment dashboard using the reference number. If the bank confirms success but the beneficiary still cannot locate the funds, open a support case with both sides’ details.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not try to stop a UPI payment
NPCI states that once a UPI payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped. You can report an error, request a refund or dispute a debit, but there is no cancellation button that reverses an already initiated transfer. This is why checking the payee, amount and account before approving the UPI PIN matters.
Retrying safely after a failure
Retry only after you have a failed final status, have confirmed that the first attempt did not debit the account, and have corrected the displayed cause. Use this checklist:
- Refresh UPI Payments > History and check the account statement.
- Save the original transaction ID/RRN in case the first attempt later settles.
- Correct the specific issue: balance, PIN, limit, connectivity or required account verification.
- Make one new attempt and keep its new reference number separate from the first.
- Check that the recipient or merchant received the new payment before closing the issue.
When the first transaction is still pending, wait for the final result or obtain explicit confirmation from the bank or merchant before attempting another payment. This avoids duplicate debits that can require a separate refund investigation.
Escalate to chargeback if normal support does not resolve the debit
ICICI says a chargeback request can be made within 40 days of the transaction. The beneficiary bank has 15 days to respond. Ask ICICI whether your case qualifies and submit the transaction record, debit proof, dispute reference, merchant or recipient correspondence, and a clear description of what outcome you are seeking.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use NPCI’s complaint process when bank escalation stalls
You can register or track a UPI complaint through NPCI’s complaint process. Prepare the bank name, payment date, 12-digit transaction ID/RRN, linked account information and amount. Select the issue that matches the actual result—failed debit, pending settlement, beneficiary not credited or another listed category—and retain the complaint number.
NPCI’s FAQ states that a failed UPI transaction which debited the account should be refunded. Its guidance also says to contact your bank if that refund is not received within one hour. Because ICICI’s own FAQs show longer windows in other contexts, use both the NPCI guidance and the live ICICI record when deciding whether to escalate.
Fraud or unauthorised UPI activity
If you did not initiate the payment, treat it as a security incident rather than an ordinary technical failure. Contact ICICI immediately through an official channel, report the transaction as unauthorised or fraudulent, and follow the bank’s account-protection instructions.

- Never share your UPI PIN, one-time password, card PIN, password or full login credentials.
- Do not approve a “collect” request or scan a QR code to receive money; approving a UPI PIN authorises a debit.
- Save screenshots, the RRN, device notifications and the exact time you noticed the transaction.
- Ask the bank whether your UPI access, linked account or credentials should be temporarily secured.
ICICI’s complaint routes include transaction-failure and fraud categories, so choose the category that reflects what actually happened.

Limits and account checks that can explain a failure
NPCI’s UPI FAQ lists ₹1 lakh per transaction for normal UPI, but limits can vary by bank, account type, use case and later rule changes. Treat that figure as a reference, not a guarantee that your ICICI account can send that amount. A bank-specific daily or frequency limit may be lower, and some categories may have different ceilings.
Before retrying a limit-related failure, check the amount, recent UPI activity and any limit information shown in iMobile. Splitting a payment into several transfers may still fail if a daily or count limit applies, and it can complicate reconciliation with a merchant.
Person-to-person and merchant cases
| Case | Useful verification | Likely escalation evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer to another person | Recipient checks the credited account using the RRN; verify the exact UPI ID and name. | Both parties’ account details, RRN, timestamp and screenshots of the sender debit and recipient search. |
| Merchant purchase | Merchant checks its payment gateway or acquiring-bank record; retain the order or invoice number. | Invoice, order status, merchant correspondence, RRN and bank statement. |
| QR payment | Confirm the QR belonged to the intended merchant before paying again. | Photo or receipt showing the QR context, merchant name, amount and RRN. |
These distinctions help the bank identify whether the problem is a sender-side debit, beneficiary settlement, merchant reconciliation or an incorrect payee.

What to record before closing the case
- Final status in iMobile and the time it changed
- Whether the debit was reversed and the date the credit appeared
- Dispute, call, chargeback or NPCI complaint references
- Any amount difference between the original debit and refund
- Confirmation from the recipient or merchant that the funds arrived
Keep these records until the transaction is settled in your account statement and the recipient or merchant confirms the outcome. If a later reversal creates a duplicate credit or debit, the saved references let ICICI trace the complete sequence.
