Start by identifying the machine. A standalone Dyson WashG1 and a Dyson vacuum fitted with the Submarine™ wet roller head use different water systems and require different checks. On WashG1, streaks or dirty-looking water usually call for cleaning the roller, debris tray, sprung mangle and squeegee, then checking both tanks and running Self-clean. On Submarine, a small amount of water left on the floor is expected; excessive water or a leak points to the reservoir cap, snorkel direction, cassette seating or the waste-extraction tray.
Disconnect the machine from charging or power before removing parts, keep water away from electrical contacts and the vacuum neck, and follow your flooring manufacturer’s care instructions. Do not assume a new roller is the first fix: clean and dry the existing parts, then replace a roller only when it is worn or has reached Dyson’s maintenance interval.

Identify which Dyson wet cleaner you have
The symptom wording can be misleading because Dyson uses different names for similar complaints. “Poor pickup” generally describes WashG1, while Submarine support separates expected residual moisture, no water dispensing and excess water or leaking. Check the product label, the controls and the wet head before following any procedure.

Never use WashG1 tank or roller instructions on a Submarine head, or vice versa. Parts such as rollers, tanks, lids, snorkels and trays are model-specific; verify the exact vacuum or cleaner model before ordering anything.

Fix streaks, poor pickup or dirty water on Dyson WashG1
1. Prepare the machine and inspect the floor
- Stop cleaning and place WashG1 on a stable surface.
- Remove visible strings, hair, food, grit and other debris from the floor and from around the roller area. Large debris can prevent the squeegee from making an even seal, leaving wet lines.
- Check the floor-care instructions for the surface. A cleaning solution that is safe for one finish can leave a film or damage another.
Streaks are often caused by an obstructed or dirty pickup path rather than a failed pump. Dyson’s poor-pickup checklist specifically names four parts: the roller, debris tray, sprung mangle and squeegee. Work through all four before judging the machine’s water delivery.
2. Clean the roller
- Remove the roller according to the WashG1 user guide.
- Pick out wrapped hair and solid debris.
- When residue remains, wash the roller with warm water and detergent as directed for WashG1. Rinse it thoroughly and squeeze out excess water.
- Leave the roller to dry completely before reinstalling it. A damp roller that has not dried evenly can redistribute dirty water and make the next pass look worse.
Inspect the roller only after it is clean and dry. Flattened, damaged or visibly worn material can reduce pickup and produce lines. Dyson recommends replacing a WashG1 roller every six months or sooner if it is worn. That is a maintenance interval, not a diagnosis that every streak requires a replacement.
3. Clear the debris tray, sprung mangle and squeegee
Remove the debris tray and empty it. Rinse the tray and remove material caught around the sprung mangle. Wipe the squeegee so its contact edge is free of grit and sticky residue. Reinstall each part firmly. A tray that is not fully seated or a squeegee blocked by debris can leave dirty water behind even when the roller looks clean.

4. Verify clean-water delivery
If the roller appears dry, the machine is not dispensing water or the floor is being cleaned unevenly, check the clean-water tank:
- Fill it with the water specified in the WashG1 guide.
- Confirm the tank is seated correctly and its connection is unobstructed.
- Run a short test on a suitable section of floor and allow a few moments for water to reach the roller.
An empty or poorly seated clean-water tank can mimic a blocked roller. If the tank is full and correctly fitted but no water reaches the floor, stop repeatedly cycling the machine and proceed to cleaning and support checks rather than adding unapproved chemicals.

5. Empty and rinse the dirty-water tank
WashG1 alerts you when the dirty-water tank needs emptying. When alerted, remove and empty it, rinse it, and clip it back in securely. Also empty the debris tray. A full waste tank reduces the machine’s ability to collect liquid and solids, so the floor can look wet or streaked after a pass.
Rinse the dirty-water tank and debris tray regularly, then dry them. Do not leave contaminated water standing between uses; it can produce odor and allow residue to dry onto the collection path.
6. Run the WashG1 Self-clean cycle
Use Self-clean after the initial debris and tank cleanup, not as a substitute for emptying a blocked tray. Dyson’s sequence is:
- Empty the debris tray.
- Empty the dirty-water tank.
- Fill the clean-water tank to the
MAXmark. - Start the Self-clean cycle using the machine’s control.
- When the cycle finishes, empty the debris tray and both tanks again as directed.
- Rinse parts that the guide identifies for washing and leave the rollers and removable components to dry thoroughly.
Self-clean flushes the machine’s cleaning path, but it does not repair a worn roller, a damaged seal or a blocked snorkel. If streaking returns immediately after a complete cycle, inspect the mechanical parts again and check for an error alert.
7. Descale the clean-tank filter mesh when needed
For possible limescale or reduced water flow, the WashG1 guide recommends cleaning the clean-tank filter mesh every six months. Remove the mesh as instructed, soak it for one hour in citric acid or vinegar, rinse it thoroughly and reinstall it only when clean.

Keep this descaling instruction separate from roller cleaning. Do not pour citric acid or vinegar into the machine unless the exact WashG1 guide tells you to do so. The filter treatment is for the removable mesh, while roller washing uses the procedure and cleaning product specified for that component.
Fix a Dyson Submarine wet roller head that leaves water behind
Understand what is normal
Dyson’s Submarine troubleshooting guidance states: Water left behind by the Dyson Submarine™ wet roller head is expected.
A thin amount of residual moisture is therefore not, by itself, evidence of a defect. The important distinction is between the normal damp trail produced by a wet roller and excessive pooling, a continuously wet floor, or water leaking from the head or tank.
If the amount is excessive, first stop the vacuum, detach the wet head safely and place it over a sink. Then check the waste and supply components below.
Check the waste-extraction tray
- With the head detached and held over a sink, empty water from the waste-extraction tray.
- Remove debris that could prevent the tray from collecting liquid.
- Rinse and wipe the tray as directed, then refit it securely.
Leaving used water in the tray can make the head appear to leak on the next use. Emptying it after each use is Dyson’s recommended way to reduce that risk.

Check that the reservoir cap is present, clean and tightened clockwise. A loose cap can allow water to escape while the head is moved or used. Do not overtighten a damaged cap; replace the model-specific component or contact Dyson if the seal is split or the cap will not close normally.

Orient the snorkel correctly
The snorkel opening must face downward toward the floor during use. If it is turned away from the floor, water delivery and collection can be affected, and the head may leave more water than expected. Inspect the opening for hair or dried residue and clear it without inserting a sharp object that could damage the passage.
Seat the cassette fully
Slide the cassette back into the head until it clicks, and make sure its guide sits in the channel. A cassette that is only partly inserted can interrupt both water flow and waste extraction. Reassemble the head before testing; do not operate it with the cassette loose.
When the Submarine head dispenses no water
- Fill the reservoir to the
MAXmark with cold, clean water. - Confirm the reservoir is seated and the cap is tight.
- Inspect the snorkel for a blockage and orient its opening toward the floor.
- Remove and reinstall the cassette until it clicks and its guide is in the channel.
- Test the head and wait a few moments for water to emerge before deciding that flow has failed.
If the reservoir is full, the snorkel is clear and the cassette is correctly fitted but the roller remains dry, stop using the head and seek model-specific Dyson support. Do not substitute concentrated detergent, bleach or a high-foaming product in the tank.
Clean and dry the Submarine head after every use
- Detach the wet head safely.
- Remove hair, grit and other debris from the roller, tray and channels.
- Wash the removable parts using the Submarine instructions.
- Wipe the head and fittings.
- Allow the parts to air-dry in a warm, well-ventilated space.
Keep water away from the neck connection between the wet head and the vacuum. Reassembling a wet head before it has dried can spread dirty water and make a clean floor look streaked on the next run.
Replace a worn Submarine roller
Dyson recommends replacing the Submarine wet roller about every six months, depending on how often the machine is used. Replace it sooner if the roller is visibly worn or damaged. Confirm compatibility with the precise vacuum and wet-head model; a WashG1 roller is not a substitute for a Submarine roller.

Use the symptom to choose the next check

Cleaning products and water cautions
Use only the cleaning method specified for the exact component and model. Submarine guidance cautions against bleach, high-foaming products and neat detergent in the tank. Foam can interfere with water delivery and waste extraction, while bleach can damage materials or leave unwanted residue.
WashG1 roller instructions allow washing with warm water and detergent when debris remains, but that does not authorize putting the same detergent into the clean-water tank. The WashG1 mesh-filter treatment uses a one-hour citric-acid or vinegar soak every six months; it is not a general instruction to add acid to the machine. When in doubt, use clean water and consult the model guide.

Prevent streaks and dirty-water problems
After every WashG1 session
- Empty the dirty-water tank and debris tray when alerted and whenever visible waste remains.
- Rinse the tanks and tray.
- Run Self-clean with the clean tank filled to
MAX, then empty the tanks again. - Wash the roller when residue is visible and let it dry completely before the next use.
After every Submarine session
- Empty the waste-extraction tray and any remaining water from the reservoir.
- Remove debris from the roller and head.
- Check the cap, snorkel orientation and cassette seating before storage.
- Air-dry removable parts in a warm, well-ventilated area, keeping the neck connection dry.
Every six months
- Replace a WashG1 roller, or a Submarine roller, at the manufacturer’s approximately six-month interval, sooner if worn.
- For WashG1, descale the clean-tank filter mesh with the specified one-hour citric-acid or vinegar soak.
- Inspect seals, caps, guides and trays for cracks or distortion.
When cleaning does not solve the problem
Escalate to Dyson support when the machine shows an error alert, continues leaking after the cap, snorkel, cassette and tray checks, has a cracked tank or head, or will not dispense water after the correct tank and filter checks. Tell support the exact model, the symptom, whether the floor is merely damp or visibly pooling, and which cleaning and reassembly steps you completed.
Do not keep operating a unit that leaks toward electrical contacts, has a damaged neck connection or produces an unusual smell or noise. Use only replacement parts confirmed for the exact model. A listing that describes a Dyson roller, tank or snorkel is not enough by itself; verify fit against the machine’s model identification before purchase.
What a successful fix looks like
For WashG1, the roller and pickup path should be free of debris, the tanks should be clean and correctly seated, water should reach the floor evenly, and the machine should collect dirty water without leaving a film. For Submarine, a light damp trail can remain by design, but there should be no unexplained pooling or leak once the tray is empty, the cap is tight, the snorkel points down and the cassette is fully clicked into place.
