Identify which failure you are seeing
Dressmaker has three different states that can look like the same bug. Separating them prevents you from deleting a recoverable project while trying to fix a save problem.

These are reported workarounds, not guaranteed fixes for every installation. The official Steam listing confirms the game’s sewing and saving features, but bug-specific behavior comes from independent guides and player discussions. No reliable source publishes an incidence rate for these failures.

A commission card can show every requested color, fabric, silhouette, or decoration in green while the garment is still unfinished. The completion control depends on construction state: every pattern piece must be placed on the mannequin and every seam between pieces must be stitched. A green requirement is therefore a checklist for the client’s brief, not proof that the mesh is physically assembled.

Small pieces are the usual reason for the mismatch. A collar, cuff, skirt tip, or narrow trim can satisfy no visible requirement of its own, yet the game still waits for it. A panel can also be cut correctly and remain detached in an inventory tab. Until it is placed and sewn, Finish Dress may remain hidden.
Fix a missing Finish Dress button
Work through these checks in order. They are reversible and preserve the project, unlike restarting it.
1. Inspect construction rather than the commission card
- Return to the mannequin and look for any pattern piece that is floating, offset, or not visibly connected to the garment.
- Click or select each visible piece and look for a seam that has not been completed.
- Stitch every seam the interface presents, even if the commission card already shows green checks.
Do not assume that a complete-looking silhouette is sewn. The game can leave a narrow join or back panel unfinished while the front appears correct.

2. Rotate the mannequin completely and zoom in
Use a full 360-degree inspection rather than checking only the camera’s starting angle. Zoom closely around areas where pieces overlap. Reported hiding places include:
- the inside of sleeves;
- the underside of collars;
- the back of the bodice or skirt;
- seams along a hem or side panel; and
- any location where a small sewing icon is partly covered by another piece.
Move the camera slowly. A sewing indicator can be obscured by the garment geometry, so a quick spin is easy to miss.

3. Examine every fabric roll
Open each roll used for the commission and look for a piece that was never cut. Compare the remaining shapes with the garment’s outline. Pay particular attention to a collar, cuff, skirt tip, or trim: these are easy to overlook because they use little fabric.
An uncut piece is different from a piece that was cut and left unattached. If the required shape is still on the roll, cut it, place it on the mannequin, and sew its seams before checking the completion control again.

4. Check both inventory tabs for detached pieces
Open Patterns and inspect every panel. Then open Accessories, even if the dress appears to have no accessory requirement. A panel can be cut successfully and remain in one of these tabs rather than on the mannequin.
- Select a detached panel.
- Place it in its matching position on the mannequin.
- Rotate the view to confirm that its edges meet the adjoining pieces.
- Sew every seam created by the attachment.
Repeat the check after placing the part. Attaching one panel can expose another seam or reveal that a small trim is still missing.
5. Save, quit, and reload
After the inspection, save the game and quit to the menu or desktop. Launch the game again and reopen the project. Independent troubleshooting references report that a reload can make a missing panel or piece reappear. Treat this as a recovery attempt, not proof that the underlying state is fixed.

When the project returns, repeat the mannequin, fabric-roll, Patterns, and Accessories checks before doing more cutting. If Finish Dress is now present, use it only after confirming that every seam is closed.
6. If the button is still absent
Use the same three-state diagnosis:
- If one piece or seam is visibly absent, this remains a construction-state problem. Continue the slow camera inspection.
- If the mannequin is empty but the commission was in progress, look for the project in the sketchbook as described below.
- If multiple projects disappear or fail to persist, stop cutting and move to the Windows or Steam save checks. Repeatedly restarting can destroy evidence and work.
Recover an unfinished dress from the sketchbook
An unfinished dress may not appear on the page you last viewed. Open the sketchbook or journal and turn through its pages until you find the project that was in progress. Select that page, then return to the mannequin.
A Steam Community user described the behavior this way: “As long as you haven’t clicked ‘finish dress’ you should be able to go back to any unfinished pieces by turning the page to them in your sketchbook.” This is a player report, so the page-navigation recovery should be considered a reported workaround rather than a documented guarantee.
Do not use Restart Dress as a search method
Restart Dress is a destructive choice once fabric has been cut. A player discussion records that using it after cutting scraps can remove the fabric already cut. If you are trying to locate a missing project, first save, reload, and search every sketchbook page. Restart only when you deliberately want to abandon the current construction and accept the loss of its cut scraps.
Do not ring the bell to escape a stuck project
Another player report says that ringing the bell while a dress is stuck scraps the active dress and summons the next client. That may make the missing project harder to recover. Use the normal save-and-quit cycle and sketchbook navigation first.

Protect your work before changing anything
Before verifying files, changing Windows security settings, or experimenting with a project, preserve the local save directory. On Windows, copy this folder to another drive or a clearly named backup location:
C:Users<you>AppDataLocalLowCozy LivesDressmaker
Keep the backup unchanged. Do not overwrite it with a newer, possibly empty save. If you need to restore a file later, close the game and Steam first, then make a second copy of the current folder so you can undo the experiment.
The angle-bracketed account name in the path is your Windows user folder. In File Explorer, paste the path into the address bar after replacing it with your account name, or browse to C:Users, open your user folder, and continue through AppDataLocalLowCozy LivesDressmaker. If AppData is hidden, enable hidden items in File Explorer.
Fix a game-wide save failure on Windows
If every new dress reverts after quitting, the issue is broader than one mannequin. Check the operating system and installation only after backing up the save folder.
Check Controlled Folder Access
Windows ransomware protection can block a game from writing to its local save directory. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, find Ransomware protection, and review Controlled folder access. If it is enabled, check whether Dressmaker or Steam is being blocked. Allow the legitimate game executable only if you recognize it and understand the security trade-off; do not disable folder protection permanently just to test a dress.

After changing the permission, start the game, make a harmless test change, save, quit, and reopen it. Confirm whether that test persists before returning to an important commission. If it does not, restore the previous security setting and continue with file verification rather than repeatedly editing the dress.
Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click Dressmaker and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Launch the game and test saving with a non-critical project.
Verification checks the installed program files; it is not a substitute for backing up the save directory. Keep the backup even if Steam reports that all files are valid.
Understand Steam Cloud limits
The official Steam listing reports Steam Cloud support. Cloud synchronization can help restore a save when the local installation is healthy, but it does not guarantee that every platform has the same local files. The troubleshooting reference specifically warns that a save may not transfer cleanly between Mac, Windows, and Steam Deck.

If you move between platforms, allow Steam to finish syncing before launching the game, and avoid opening the same project on two devices while one is offline. If a cloud prompt offers conflicting versions, preserve the local save folder first; choosing a cloud copy without a backup can replace the version containing your unfinished dress.
A practical decision tree
- Only the Finish Dress control is missing: rotate and zoom, stitch hidden seams, inspect every fabric roll, then check Patterns and Accessories.
- The dress is not in the current wardrobe or page: save and reload, then turn through the sketchbook to the unfinished project.
- You cut scraps and are considering Restart Dress: stop. Restart can discard those scraps according to player reports.
- You are considering the bell: do not use it as a recovery shortcut; a report says it scraps the active dress and advances to the next client.
- Nothing saves across projects: back up the Windows folder, inspect Controlled Folder Access, verify Steam files, and test with a harmless change.
This order keeps the least destructive actions first. Inspection and reload preserve the most information; restarting, abandoning, or advancing to another client can remove the state you are trying to diagnose.
What is known about Dressmaker’s save and completion behavior
Steam describes Dressmaker as a Cozy Lives game published by Free Lives and lists its release date as September 21, 2026. Its official description says players choose fabric, arrange and cut patterns, sew garments, add decorations, and turn dresses in for reputation and coin. The listing also reports Steam Cloud support.
At the time of the cited Steam snapshot, the English review score was 98% positive from 11,606 reviews. That is a measure of overall player reviews, not a bug rate and not evidence that a particular save problem is rare or common.

If a backed-up save still fails after the reversible checks, keep the backup and report the exact sequence, platform, and point at which the project disappears rather than repeatedly restarting it.
