What a ChromeDriver version mismatch means
ChromeDriver must be compatible with the Chrome browser it controls. Selenium’s Chrome documentation says the versions must match, and its troubleshooting guidance identifies an incompatible browser and driver as a cause of SessionNotCreatedException. The mismatch prevents WebDriver from creating a Chrome session. Screenshot methods run only after that session exists, so first resolve startup. If Chrome starts and the screenshot is still missing or incorrect, investigate capture code separately.
Check which Chrome and ChromeDriver are involved
- Read the complete exception. If it says the installed ChromeDriver supports a different Chrome version, treat it as a driver-selection or compatibility problem.
- Check Chrome’s version. Open
chrome://settings/helpin the browser Selenium is meant to control. In managed, containerized, or remote setups, check the Chrome installation in that same environment—not merely the browser on your desktop. - Identify the driver Selenium actually selects. For a driver installed on PATH, run
chromedriver --version. If more than one copy exists, locate each candidate and check which one comes first on PATH. - Inspect explicit configuration. Look for a Chrome Service or executable path in the script, test configuration, environment, or container setup. An explicitly supplied path can direct Selenium to an old binary even when another compatible driver is installed.
Checking only the version of a driver you downloaded is not enough: the important question is which executable the failing Selenium process launches.

Choose how Selenium should get a compatible driver
Use Selenium Manager for the usual Selenium 4 setup
Selenium Manager is included with Selenium bindings from version 4.6 and can discover, download, and cache a compatible driver when your code does not explicitly provide one. For most projects, update to a current Selenium binding, remove an obsolete driver from PATH or explicit configuration, and retry without supplying a driver path. Selenium’s guidance describes Selenium Manager as a fallback; a stale PATH entry or explicit executable can keep the unwanted driver in play. Selenium Manager
Selenium 4.11.0, released July 31, 2023, added support for Chrome for Testing endpoints and automated browser management. Manage the driver on PATH
If your team controls driver installation centrally, replace the stale executable with a compatible ChromeDriver and make sure the intended copy is the one found first on PATH. This avoids hard-coding a machine-specific location in every script, but environments can drift: each machine, CI runner, or container needs an appropriate driver.

Set an explicit Chrome Service path
For a pinned or tightly controlled environment, install the compatible executable and configure the language binding’s Chrome Service to use its exact path. Selenium’s installation guidance covers driver setup by binding. Selenium installation and upgrade guidance
An explicit path makes driver choice clear, but it is less portable: each machine or environment must have the binary at the configured location. Do not set a path until you have confirmed that the executable at that location is the one you intend to use.
Replace the driver manually when needed
- Determine the browser release and channel used by the failing process.
- Find the compatible ChromeDriver using current Chrome for Testing metadata or let Selenium Manager resolve it. Selenium’s documentation describes Chrome for Testing as the modern source for Chrome and ChromeDriver discovery; exact compatible builds change over time. Selenium 4.11.0 release notes
- Replace the old executable in the location Selenium actually uses. If you keep multiple versions, update PATH ordering or the explicit Service path so the replacement is selected.
- Retry creating a Chrome session before running the screenshot step.
Chrome updates can leave manually pinned drivers behind. Historical examples such as Chrome 113 and 115 illustrate that drift; they are not current version or download recommendations. Do not choose a numeric driver version from an old example—resolve compatibility for the browser release in your environment.

Compare the driver-management choices

Troubleshoot if the session still will not start
- The error still names an unsupported Chrome version: Recheck the exact Chrome binary and exact ChromeDriver binary used in the failing environment. Remove or correct duplicate PATH entries and explicit paths; then retry.
- The versions appear compatible, but startup fails: Check that the driver file exists and is accessible, has execute permission where required, and is not blocked by operating-system security restrictions. - Selenium Manager warns about an incompatible PATH driver: Remove the stale driver from PATH and retry without specifying an executable, so Selenium Manager can resolve a compatible one. Selenium Manager
- The browser launches but the screenshot fails: Confirm that the session was created, then check the screenshot invocation, destination path and write permissions, and whether the page was ready when capture occurred. These are separate from browser–driver version compatibility.
Disabling ChromeDriver’s build check is documented as unsupported; it is not a sound compatibility fix. Correct driver selection or installation instead. Selenium: Chrome
