Capture and save a screenshot in Java
This runnable example opens a page, captures the current browser screenshot, copies it to screenshot.png in the working directory, and quits the driver even if capture or copying fails.

}getScreenshotAs performs the capture; the Files.copy call determines the destination and replaces an existing file with the same name. The Selenium Java API exposes the operation through TakesScreenshot, which ChromeDriver implements. Selenium documents the file-output workflow in its screenshot example and the implementation in the ChromeDriver API.
Capture one element instead of the browser view
For an image of a specific element, find that element and call its screenshot method rather than the driver’s method. This captures the element; it is not a full-page screenshot.

Set up ChromeDriver
With a current Selenium installation, Selenium Manager can manage driver downloads automatically beginning with Selenium 4.6. If automatic management does not suit your environment, Selenium also documents setting an explicit executable path through the appropriate Service object. Selenium’s Chrome-specific guidance says Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions should match and describes Selenium 4 compatibility with Chrome 75 and greater by default. Compatibility guidance can change, so consult the current Chrome documentation when diagnosing startup problems. Selenium’s downloads page listed Java version 4.49.0 as stable on September 9, 2026; that is version context, not a requirement for the screenshot call.
Troubleshoot common failures
- ChromeDriver fails to start: Check that Chrome is installed and that Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions match. If Selenium Manager cannot provide a usable driver in your environment, configure the executable with a Service object.
- The destination file is missing: The path in
Path.of(...)is resolved relative to the Java process’s working directory unless you provide an absolute path. Check that directory and ensure the process can write there. - The capture looks incomplete: The basic driver call captures the browser’s current screenshot semantics; do not assume it produces a full-page image. If the desired image is a single element, use
WebElement.getScreenshotAs. - A suggested fix is to disable driver build checks: Selenium describes that as unsupported; do not use it as a routine solution. Prefer resolving the browser/driver setup issue.

What image format does OutputType.FILE use?
The example writes the returned screenshot file with a .png filename. The capture method supplies the image data; the copy step saves that file.
