Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFirst, find where the picture disappears: check the playing video in OBS, an OBS local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, and the viewer playback. If OBS itself is black, troubleshoot the scene or media source. If OBS and its recording look right but YouTube’s incoming preview is black, check the event connection and stream output instead. There is no single fix for every black-screen case.
Locate the stage where the video goes black
Play the prerecorded file while watching OBS, then compare the result at each stage. This prevents changing unrelated settings: a visible OBS preview and a black YouTube preview point to a different problem than a black preview inside OBS.

| What you see | Where to investigate |
|---|---|
| OBS preview is black | Active scene, source visibility, media file playback, layering, position, or rendering. |
| OBS preview is visible but its local recording is black | OBS output or encoding, system performance, and rendering load. |
| OBS preview and local recording are visible, but YouTube’s incoming preview is black | Whether OBS is sending to the intended event, server URL, stream key, encoder settings, and YouTube stream-health messages. |
| YouTube’s incoming preview is visible, but a viewer sees black | Recheck viewer playback and quality selection, and allow for delivery or processing delay. Official guidance does not establish one universal fix for this case. |
OBS showing “streaming” does not by itself prove YouTube is receiving usable video. For scheduled events, YouTube’s setup guidance says to wait for the Live Control Room preview and then select Go live. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance and encoder settings and stream-health guidance.

Fix a black OBS preview
Confirm the media source and playback
- In OBS, select the scene that is actually active for the stream. In the Sources list, select the prerecorded video source.
- Open the source’s Properties and confirm that Local File points to the intended video. OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.
- Check that the source is visible: its eye icon should be enabled. Start or restart playback and watch the OBS canvas while the file is playing.
- Review the Media Source playback options. Enable Loop if the video should repeat. Restart playback when source becomes active makes the file restart when the source is in the current scene and visible. Show nothing when playback ends can leave no picture after the file finishes; check whether playback has ended and whether that end behavior fits your use.
These options affect whether and when the file plays or disappears; they are not universal fixes for a black image. OBS documents them in Media Sources.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Check scene layering and placement
OBS composites scene sources in layers, so a source above the video can cover it. Temporarily move the media source higher in the Sources list as a diagnostic, and check whether the eye icon is enabled. Also inspect its transform, dimensions, and position: the video must have a visible size and sit inside the canvas. OBS explains source ordering and visibility in Sources Guide.
Check the local recording
Make a short local OBS recording while the file plays, then inspect it. If both the preview and recording are black, focus on the selected source, scene composition, and render path. If the preview is visible but the recording is black, focus on output and encoding, then check for performance symptoms before changing settings.

Only troubleshoot VLC if the scene uses VLC Video Source
A playlist built with OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC installed. If OBS is 64-bit, OBS documentation says to use 64-bit VLC. This dependency does not apply to the ordinary Media Source; do not install VLC as a general remedy unless the scene actually uses the VLC source. See OBS’s source documentation.

- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm that you are checking the intended scheduled event or live stream.
- In OBS’s stream settings, verify the YouTube server URL and stream key belong to that event. Do not share the key; if you suspect it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Start sending from OBS and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. For scheduled streams, follow YouTube’s flow: check the preview, then select Go live when ready.
- Read YouTube’s stream-health messages. A connected OBS status is not a substitute for confirming that YouTube is receiving video.
Use a local recording as a control: if it shows the footage but YouTube’s incoming preview does not, the file and local scene are less likely to be the failing stage. YouTube’s setup steps cover the event flow; its encoder guidance describes stream health and supported configurations.

Check rendering or encoding when the evidence points there
OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render a scene. If the preview or recording points to rendering trouble, or performance indicators show overload, try the targeted checks in OBS’s encoding performance guide:
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator as an initial GPU-overload check.
- Close applications you know are using substantial GPU resources.
- Simplify resource-heavy scenes, reduce source sizes or filters, and lower output resolution or frame rate if the system remains overloaded.
These are performance troubleshooting steps, not a universal cure for a static black frame. Avoid changing encoder settings without an observation that points to output or performance as the failing stage.

The built-in cable features 26AWG (2C) + 30AWG (1P) tinned copper conductors, ensuring excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance, enhancing durability, and reducing signal loss
Match the encoder to YouTube’s published requirements
If YouTube is receiving the stream but the output is problematic, compare OBS’s encoder configuration with YouTube’s current published encoder settings. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs. Its guidance allows frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends keyframes every 2 seconds, says they should not exceed 4 seconds, and specifies CBR bitrate encoding. Select bitrate from YouTube’s published table for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
Rule out a network problem only when indicators support it
A black image alone does not show that frames are being dropped. Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator. If the counter rises or the indicator turns yellow or red, OBS describes the connection as unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Then troubleshoot the network path:

- Choose the appropriate streaming server and lower the bitrate to a level your stable upload bandwidth can sustain.
- Check whether VPN, firewall, or other network software is interfering.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired connection; OBS recommends wired networking for streaming.
- Check network hardware if the connection remains unstable.
Use OBS’s dropped-frames network guide for these connection symptoms; do not treat a network reset as the default response to a black source.
Test the complete path before the next event
- Run a private or unlisted test with the same OBS scene, prerecorded file, and event setup you plan to use.
- Include movement and audio. YouTube specifically recommends a representative test with both, and recommends monitoring stream health; see its encoder-settings guidance.
- Check the OBS preview, inspect a local recording, confirm YouTube’s incoming preview and stream-health status, then verify viewer playback.
- Confirm the scheduled event and stream key are the intended ones before the real broadcast.
YouTube says automatic archiving applies to streams shorter than 12 hours after encoder sending ends. Do not rely on that archive as a substitute for checking that the live picture was visible during the event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the issue is that your prerecorded YouTube stream depends on a computer staying on, StreamNeo is a different way to run uploaded videos: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded video, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
