What matters most for a continuous stream
A VPS can run encoder software continuously, but the plan’s advertised CPU, port speed, or transfer label alone does not establish that a stream will remain uninterrupted. Compare the full setup across five dimensions:
- Transfer: estimate monthly outbound data from the stream bitrate and runtime; compare it with the Lightsail bundle’s allowance for the chosen AWS Region, or review Contabo’s fair-use terms.
- Sustained network capacity: allow at least 20% headroom above the stream bitrate, following YouTube’s guidance.
- Encoding workload: choose compute for the actual encoder and settings. Published VPS specifications are not a comparative encoding benchmark.
- Recurring cost: compare the exact plan, region, and contract or billing term, including any applicable transfer charges and tools you actually need.
- Operations: plan how you will monitor YouTube stream health and recover after an encoder, server, network, or ingest interruption.

Estimate the stream’s bandwidth and transfer
Choose the intended encoding settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives H.264 bitrate ranges of 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those ranges are specific to those settings; use YouTube’s guidance for your actual resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than applying either range to every stream. YouTube encoder settings

Estimate monthly outbound data
For a continuous stream at a constant video bitrate, a useful decimal estimate is bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 GB per hour, or bitrate in Mbps × 324 GB for 30 days. This is arithmetic, not a provider quotation. Audio, protocol overhead, variable bitrate, and reconnects can raise actual usage.
For example, a continuous 10 Mbps stream uses roughly 3.24 TB over 30 days before those additions. Use the stream’s actual operating time if it will not run continuously. Compare the estimate with the exact Lightsail regional allowance or Contabo’s current fair-use language; do not infer that Contabo’s traffic label is unconditional or that a Lightsail allowance is the same in every region.

Allow for network headroom
YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total stream bitrate and checking available upload bandwidth and connection reliability. Apply that headroom to the outgoing capacity required by the primary stream. Include a second feed only if your design actually sends one. YouTube streaming tips
Decision process: choose a plan that fits
- Set the target stream format. Choose codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using YouTube’s encoder recommendations for those settings. YouTube encoder guidance
- Calculate expected transfer. Multiply the planned Mbps by runtime using the estimate above, then allow for audio and overhead.
- Check sustained outbound capacity. Add YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom and compare the result with the selected plan’s published network details. A port-speed label is not a real-world performance guarantee.
- For Lightsail, select the region first. Check the bundle’s transfer allowance in that region, then establish any applicable charges beyond it using AWS’s current pricing information. Do not treat an example allowance as region-independent.
- For Contabo, read the plan and fair-use terms together. Compare the plan’s listed port speed with your requirement, and account for its fair-use qualification. The advertised traffic label is not a no-conditions promise.
- Compare like billing terms. Include the term behind each quoted price, plus any monitoring, backup, or recovery services required by your implementation.

Configure YouTube ingest and protect the stream key
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. In your encoder, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key. A 24/7 broadcast also needs an archive plan. YouTube’s cited encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a single uninterrupted stream running longer than that will be archived in full. For a continuous stream, transfer can be a decisive part of the calculation. A Lightsail bundle allowance that falls below the estimate requires checking applicable charges before committing; the cited information does not establish a precise overage figure for a particular region and plan. Contabo’s fair-use wording also means that “unlimited” should not be presented as a guarantee against throttling in exceptional high or disruptive use cases.
