Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOBS Studio is the best-documented Linux starting point for sending a prerecorded video to YouTube Live: add the video as a Media Source, enable Loop if needed, and send OBS’s output to a YouTube event using its stream URL and key. That automates playback, not necessarily the entire broadcast. Scheduling the event, starting the encoder, monitoring the feed, and recovering from a failure are separate tasks.
What “automating” a prerecorded livestream involves
A video repeating in OBS is only one part of a livestream workflow. Decide which of these jobs you need software or a service to handle:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Playback: repeat a local video or playlist.
- Event setup: create or schedule the YouTube Live event and its watch page.
- Going live: start the encoder feed and start the event according to its settings.
- Unattended operation: keep the feed running, monitor it, and recover if a process or connection fails.
OBS documents the first job and can send an encoder feed to YouTube. YouTube’s scheduling and encoder instructions cover parts of event setup and going live. Those capabilities alone do not establish reliable unattended startup or recovery.

Which Linux options fit the job?
| Option | What the documentation establishes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Linux support, scenes and Media Sources, and a Loop option for media playback. | A visible, locally controlled setup for looping a prerecorded file. |
| StreamNeo | A cloud service that plays uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube stream. | Readers who want the stream to continue without leaving a Linux computer running. |
| Gyre | YouTube’s encoder documentation lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. | Readers exploring hosted continuous-streaming services. The listing does not establish Linux desktop support or comparative performance. |
OBS is the strongest directly documented Linux application here, not proof that it is the only Linux option. The available official documentation does not establish a comprehensive comparison with Linux command-line scripts or other desktop tools. For a 24/7 service recommendation, StreamNeo comes first: it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded video at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

Set up OBS to loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming and create the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel, then create or schedule a stream. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Scheduling creates an upcoming watch page and can allow reminders; it does not configure or start the encoder for you.
- Install OBS for your Linux distribution. OBS recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions and documents an Ubuntu PPA/package route. Packages supplied by other distributions may be community-maintained, so check the package source and support status for your system.
- Add the recording to an OBS scene. Create or select a scene, add a Media Source, choose the local video file, and enable Loop if you want playback to repeat. OBS documents support in this source for MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Check that the selected file plays correctly in the scene before sending it live.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS streaming settings, select an available YouTube service preset if appropriate, or enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s password and pairs it with the server address. Treat it as a secret: do not show it in screenshots or expose it in public scripts or logs.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder settings. Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube’s published encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Match codec, bitrate, frame rate, and audio settings to YouTube’s current recommendations and the capabilities of your source and connection; check the linked settings before configuring a production stream.
- Start early, preview, and monitor. Start the encoder feed in time to inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Start the YouTube event as required by its auto-start configuration. Check the public watch page, picture, and sound; YouTube advises continuously monitoring stream audio and video quality.
- End the event deliberately. End the YouTube event and stop the encoder after the broadcast. Test the actual start and end behavior on your channel before relying on a scheduled stream.
Plan for duration, monitoring, and recovery
The 12-hour archive threshold
YouTube’s current encoder help documentation, accessed in 2026, says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat that as a threshold for a single event, not a promise that one event can run indefinitely or that a longer broadcast will be archived in the same way. Check YouTube’s current guidance when planning duration.
A loop does not restart a failed broadcast
OBS’s Media Source Loop option repeats the file during playback. It does not, by itself, show that OBS will relaunch after a computer restart, restore a dropped connection, restart the YouTube event, or notify you about a failure. Test those behaviors separately if you intend to leave the stream unattended. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring the feed; do not assume a scheduled event removes the need to check it.

Consider whether the computer must remain available
With the local OBS workflow, the computer running OBS and its connection need to stay available while they are sending the feed. A Linux VPS or dedicated host may suit some unattended setups, but it is optional; home hardware may suffice. The available evidence does not establish a particular hosting provider or configuration.
Common problems and practical checks
- The channel cannot go live yet: first-time YouTube live enablement may take up to 24 hours. Complete enablement before the planned broadcast and confirm the channel is ready.
- YouTube shows no incoming preview: check that OBS is connected to the intended YouTube server URL and that the matching stream key is entered. Keep the key private while checking settings.
- The stream connects but the video does not repeat: confirm the correct file is selected in the Media Source and that Loop is enabled. Verify the file plays inside the scene.
- The event is scheduled but not live: scheduling the event does not itself send encoder video. Start the OBS feed, inspect YouTube’s incoming preview, and follow the event’s auto-start configuration.
- Viewers report missing or poor audio/video: inspect the incoming preview and public watch page, verify the selected scene and media file, and monitor the stream as YouTube recommends. Recheck codec, bitrate, frame rate, and audio settings against current YouTube guidance.
- The feed stops while left unattended: a looping source is not proof of automatic recovery. Check the computer, OBS process, and network connection, then test your specific restart and reconnection process before relying on it for continuous operation.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Having a recording available does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Before scheduling a stream, confirm that you hold the necessary rights to the video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules. Reusing content can also raise channel-policy issues; review the current reused-content guidance rather than assuming that a live presentation changes the rights or policy status of a recording.
