You can run a YouTube livestream from OBS on a Mac by connecting OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with its server URL and stream key, then keeping the Mac, network, power and video source running. But continuous output is not the same as a dependable continuous archive: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. If you need a replay, plan shorter sessions and record a local backup.
Before you start: check channel eligibility
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Its getting-started guidance also says creators must be at least 16 years old. Confirm that livestreaming is enabled for your channel before configuring OBS; eligibility and activation can affect whether you can start an encoder stream. Connect OBS to YouTube on your Mac
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. In the Live Control Room, create or select a stream configured for an encoder. YouTube provides the server URL and stream key for the connection. Follow the current YouTube workflow at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, choose YouTube as the service if it is available in your setup, or enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the streaming settings. Treat the stream key as a password: do not share it or show it in a screen recording. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Prepare the scene and audio. Add the video source or sources you intend to broadcast, then check that the audio meters respond and that the correct microphone or media audio is selected. Watch the YouTube preview to confirm both picture and sound before making the stream public.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start streaming in OBS and wait for the Live Control Room to receive the feed. Use the Live Control Room controls to bring the event live when the selected workflow requires it. Verify the preview and stream-health messages rather than assuming that an OBS connection means viewers can already watch.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. Specific macOS menu wording can vary with the OBS and macOS versions; the official workflow does not establish one universal Mac interface path. YouTube’s encoder setup details are at its encoder-stream instructions.

Use a bitrate your actual upload connection can sustain, not simply the highest setting your Mac can encode. YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable.

- Protocol and codec: use RTMP or RTMPS and H.264 as recommended by YouTube.
- Rate control: set the video encoder to CBR.
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval and do not exceed four seconds.
- Resolution, frame rate and bitrate: choose a combination that fits your connection. YouTube’s examples are 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps; lower resolution or frame rate can be preferable to an unstable feed.
- Audio and motion: test with representative sound and movement, not only a static image. Check that audio is present and stays in sync in the preview.

Plan stream length around archives and DVR
A feed that stays live around the clock should not be treated as one guaranteed, complete YouTube replay. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends keeping a local archive backup. If preserving a YouTube replay matters, schedule sessions under 12 hours and retain a local recording. The 12-hour guidance is a risk threshold, not a promise that every shorter stream will archive successfully. Read YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

DVR is a separate limitation: YouTube says rewind capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek back to before the stream went live. A viewer joining late may therefore be unable to rewind to the beginning. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Choose a session pattern
- Continuous availability matters most: a long-running feed may suit the goal, but do not rely on YouTube to produce a complete archive of a stream exceeding 12 hours.
- Replay access matters: use shorter sessions, keep a local recording, and verify that the local file is growing during each broadcast.
- Both matter: plan how the channel will transition between sessions and test the actual schedule and archive workflow before depending on it.
Keep an OBS stream running and test recovery
OBS on a Mac is still dependent on the Mac, its power, the network connection, and the source being streamed. A reconnect setting alone does not make the setup a guaranteed unattended service. Test the exact arrangement you intend to leave running, including what happens after a lost connection or a stopped source.

- Monitor audio and video quality and check YouTube stream health while the broadcast is running.
- If you are recording locally, check that the archive file is being written and growing.
- Where practical, use a wired Ethernet connection for the Mac. A compatible USB-C-to-Gigabit-Ethernet adapter may help a Mac without an Ethernet port, but it cannot prevent ISP outages, power loss or encoder failure.
- If continuity is important, test a backup-encoder or failover plan. YouTube’s example is to stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable and confirm that playback rolls over to the backup encoder. Do not assume failover works until you have tested it.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
