If 9 Kings crashes, freezes, ignores cards, or will not load your run, match the symptom before changing files. For a broken Continue button or blank king-selection screen, the developer’s May 2025 sequence was to force-quit, relaunch through Steam, and start a new run instead of selecting Continue. A run that stops accepting cards after a land expansion may recover through Save and Quit, then Continue, when that game mode supports saving. Immediate Unity crashes need a different approach, and deleting local data or resetting Steam Cloud can permanently remove progress.
The reports and developer replies cited here span March 2025 through January 2026. They describe particular builds and systems, not a guarantee that every player has the same bug or that each historical issue still exists in the current build.

First, identify which failure you have
Write down the device or operating system, game mode, whether you are using a controller or other peripheral, when the problem began, and whether Steam or 9 Kings updated immediately beforehand. Protect your progress before changing anything
Do not begin with an uninstall, manual deletion, or cloud reset. A community reset procedure discussed in the May 2025 thread explicitly warns that it deletes progress. Steam Cloud can also re-download the same problematic state after reinstalling, so reinstalling is not automatically a clean slate.

Make a backup you can identify
- Close 9 Kings normally if it still responds. If it is locked, force-quit only after giving the game a reasonable moment to finish saving.
- Before removing anything, copy the game’s local save data to a separate folder or drive. The exact location can differ by build and operating system; do not delete a folder unless you can identify it as 9 Kings save data.
- Note whether Steam Cloud is enabled and which copy you intend to keep. A local copy and a cloud copy can diverge.
- Record the current symptom and your last successful run. This gives support a way to distinguish a damaged save from a new crash.
If you cannot determine which files are saves, stop before the reset and ask in the game’s technical forum. Preserving an uncertain file is safer than guessing.
Fix a broken Continue button or empty king selection
In a May 2025 Steam discussion about settings not saving, Continue doing nothing, and an empty king-selection screen, developer Sad Socket advised a short recovery sequence. It is a dated recommendation for that failure pattern, not a universal repair for every crash.
- Force-quit 9 Kings. Use the normal close command first; terminate it from the operating system only if it will not close.
- Launch the game again from its Steam library entry rather than an old desktop shortcut or a suspended session.
- When the menu appears, choose a new run. Do not press Continue for this test.
- Check whether the king list and settings now load correctly. If the new run works, do not overwrite or delete the old save yet; keep your backup and document the original failure.
- If the developer’s sequence does not help, the same reply suggested reinstalling. Treat that as an escalation, not a guaranteed fix, and complete the save-protection steps first.
Starting a new run is a diagnostic test, not a promise that the old run is repaired. If a new run starts normally while Continue remains inert, report those two results separately. That distinction helps support identify a save-state problem instead of a general startup failure.

Recover a run that stops accepting cards after land expansion
A Steam Deck player reported that the game locked after choosing a land expansion. Another player said the run recovered by saving and quitting, then continuing from the main menu. Later replies said the behavior also appeared on PC. This is a player-reported workaround, so use it only when the current mode has a functioning save-and-continue path.
- Wait briefly and test one normal input. A delayed animation can look like a lock; repeated clicks or button presses can make the state harder to diagnose.
- Open the in-game menu and choose Save and Quit if that command is available.
- Return to the main menu instead of immediately closing the process.
- Select Continue and check whether cards accept input again.
- If the mode has no save option, do not switch to a destructive reset solely to try this workaround. Quest Mode was specifically reported as not allowing the save-and-continue step.

Check whether the command actually completed
After choosing Save and Quit, wait for the game to return to its menu before closing Steam or powering down a Steam Deck. If the menu never appears, treat the attempt as an input lock and record that fact; do not assume a save was written. When Continue is available again, test the recovered run with one card before resuming normal play. If only the original run fails while a new run works, preserve both the failing save and your backup for a support report.
Reduce late-run slowdown or an apparent freeze
Late in a run, a slowdown may be performance-related rather than a total crash. Check whether menus still open, animations continue, or audio responds. If the interface responds after a delay, give the game time before force-quitting so a save can complete.
Try the animation setting if your build still has it
In a March 11, 2025 patch announcement, Sad Socket said a prior update was reverted after a main crash issue, a memory leak observed on tested systems was fixed, spell animations were optimized, and a temporary Turn Off Animations option was added for late-game stalls. If that option remains in your version, enable it as a reversible test before changing files. Re-enable animations later if performance is normal.

The wording matters: “seems” and “every system we tested” describe the developer’s tested systems, not a measured success rate for all players. The announcement is historical and does not establish what the current build does. Read the dated notes at “NEW PATCH: Performance & Endless Mode”.
Separate a performance stall from an input lock
- Performance stall: animations or sound continue, menus eventually open, and input arrives after a delay. Lowering animation workload is the appropriate first test.
- Input lock: the scene appears active but cards and controls never respond, especially immediately after an expansion. Try the save-and-quit recovery only if the mode supports it.
- Process crash: the game closes or shows an error window. Use the startup-crash path below rather than repeatedly loading the same run.
Do not judge a late-run stall solely by frame rate. Note whether the cursor moves, whether a menu opens, and whether sound changes. Those observations separate an overloaded animation sequence from a dead process and make a bug report reproducible.

Handle an immediate Unity crash at startup
March 2025 Steam reports described a Unity error appearing immediately after an update. The developer said the issue was likely related to Steam, requested that players try a community suggestion, and said a patch was planned. Players reported mixed results: reinstalling or verifying files did not help everyone.
- Capture the complete Unity error text, including any code or module name. A photograph is useful if the window disappears quickly.
- Write down your operating system, hardware or Steam Deck model, game version if shown, connected peripherals, and the last update or configuration change.
- Restart Steam and launch 9 Kings once more. Avoid repeatedly launching while changing several variables at the same time; that makes the cause harder to isolate.
- If the game still crashes, try Steam’s file-verification or reinstall options only with your save backup made. Neither was a confirmed universal fix in the reports.
- Post the unresolved case in the “Game instantly unity crashes on startup” discussion or the game’s Crash and Bug Reports forum, including the exact error and every step already attempted.
Do not present deleting game files, running as administrator, or reinstalling as proven cures. Those actions can alter permissions or saves without addressing a Steam-side or build-specific fault.
What to include when a crash happens only after an update
State the approximate update date and whether the game launched successfully before it. Mention if the crash occurs before the main menu, only when loading Continue, or only in a particular mode. A startup crash that appears on every launch points to a different investigation than a Unity window that appears only when one old save loads. Keep the error wording unchanged; paraphrasing can remove the clue developers need.

Reinstalling can replace damaged program files, but it does not necessarily remove a bad save. One player reported that reinstalling brought the problematic Steam Cloud state back. A full community reset procedure disables Steam Cloud, uninstalls the game, removes local data, and reinstalls it; the post warns that this deletes progress. It is community advice, not an official recovery procedure.
Before a destructive reset
- Export or copy every save you can identify.
- Decide whether the local copy or Steam Cloud copy is the one you want to preserve.
- Understand that disabling Cloud can prevent automatic restoration, while leaving it enabled can restore the same broken state.
- Confirm that the mode and run you care about are represented in the backup.
- Write down the exact reset steps you plan to take and stop if a file location is unclear.
After reinstalling
Launch once and test a new run before restoring old data. If the clean run works but Continue still fails after the old save returns, the save state is a stronger suspect than the installation. Restore only the backup you can identify, and keep the original copy untouched until the result is clear.
If Steam presents a cloud-conflict choice, do not click through automatically. Pause and determine whether the local or cloud timestamp corresponds to your last good run. Choosing the wrong copy can replace the usable save; when the timestamps are unclear, preserve both copies and ask for help in the technical forum.

Report an unresolved problem so it can be reproduced
Steam’s technical-issue page for 9 Kings directs players to community discussions and the Crash and Bug Reports forum: Steam Support: 9 Kings gameplay or technical issue. The developer says it is active on Steam forums and Discord, so a concise, reproducible report is more useful than a one-line “it crashed.”
