How to Check Whether a Game Is Using the Dedicated GPU

Start the game, watch its GPU engine in Task Manager, and match the GPU number to the model shown under Performance. If needed, assign the game's executable to High performance in Windows 11 Graphics settings, restart, and verify.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To see which GPU is rendering a Windows game, start the game and enter an active 3D scene, open Task Manager, identify the game process, and watch its GPU engine. Then open Performance and match that engine’s GPU number to the displayed graphics-card model. “GPU 0” is only an index; it does not automatically mean integrated graphics.

If Windows 11 has assigned the game to the wrong adapter, go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game’s executable, choose Options, select High performance, save, restart the game, and check the live engine activity again.

What “dedicated GPU” means on a Windows PC

Microsoft generally calls the two categories integrated and discrete GPUs. An integrated GPU is built into the processor or platform and normally shares system resources. It uses less power and can handle desktop work and some games. A discrete GPU is a separate graphics processor, usually a plug-in card in a desktop or a separate chip in a laptop, with higher power and cooling requirements for heavier workloads such as modern 3D games.

A laptop can contain both. Windows and the laptop’s firmware may switch between them according to the task, balancing performance and battery life. Microsoft describes the purpose this way: “Switching between GPUs based on the task being performed allows a balance between performance and power efficiency.” Running a game on integrated graphics is therefore not automatically an error; lighter or older games may run correctly that way.

Desktop arrangements are usually easier to identify physically because the discrete card is a separate board. A laptop can place both processors on the motherboard, and an external GPU enclosure creates another possible arrangement. The monitor connector you use and the GPU number shown by Windows are not reliable proof of which processor is doing the rendering.

The quickest live check in Task Manager

Checking while the game is closed, paused at a menu, or still loading can produce little or misleading activity. Use a representative gameplay scene with the camera moving or other normal 3D work taking place.

  1. Launch the game. Load a level or match where the game is actively rendering, rather than stopping at the launcher.
  2. Open Task Manager. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, or right-click the taskbar and choose Task Manager.
  3. Find the game process. In Processes, locate the game. On some Windows versions or layouts, use Details instead.
  4. Inspect GPU information. Look for the GPU engine column. It may show an entry such as a GPU number followed by an engine name, commonly a 3D engine. If the column is not visible, use the available column chooser for that view and enable GPU-related columns.
  5. Keep the game rendering. Leave Task Manager visible long enough to observe activity while you move through the same scene. A single moment at a loading screen is not enough.
  6. Map the number to a model. Select Performance in Task Manager and open each GPU panel. Read the exact model name shown there, then match the number in the game process’s GPU engine entry to that model.

For example, if the process reports an engine beginning with GPU 1 and the Performance page labels GPU 1 with the discrete card’s model, that is the adapter currently handling the observed work. If it reports GPU 0 and the Performance page identifies GPU 0 as the integrated processor, the game is using integrated graphics for that activity.

How to map GPU 0 or GPU 1 to the actual adapter

GPU numbering is assigned by Windows for that machine. It is not a universal rule that GPU 0 is integrated or that GPU 1 is discrete. Always use the model names displayed on your own system.

What you see What it tells you What it does not tell you
GPU 0 or GPU 1 in the process view The Windows index of the adapter/engine reporting the work Whether that adapter is integrated or discrete
Model name in Performance Which physical graphics processor corresponds to that index That the game is using it at every instant
3D engine activity while playing Evidence that the mapped adapter is doing rendering work That every game task or every frame uses only that adapter
High percentage on one GPU That one of its engines is busy at that moment A guaranteed performance diagnosis or a permanent assignment

Other engines can be active at the same time. Video decode, copy, compute, and memory activity may appear alongside 3D work. Focus on the engine named for the game’s process and correlate it with the matching model in Performance.

Set a game to High performance in Windows 11

Windows 11 provides a per-app graphics preference when more than one GPU is available. Microsoft lists three choices: Let Windows decide (Power saving), Power saving, and High performance. The labels describe the preferred performance policy, not a promise that every part of an application will run on one processor.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Display, then Graphics.
  3. Find the game in the app list. If it is missing, use the option to add a desktop app and browse to the game’s executable.
  4. Select the game entry and choose Options.
  5. Select High performance. Confirm the model Windows associates with that choice when it is displayed.
  6. Choose Save.
  7. Close and restart the game. Microsoft specifically instructs users to restart the app after changing this preference.
  8. Repeat the live Task Manager check and map the process’s GPU engine to the model in Performance.

A launcher and the actual game can be separate executables. If you add only a launcher, the setting may not govern the process that renders the game. When the preference appears to have no effect, identify the executable that remains active during gameplay and add that file as well, then restart.

How to read the evidence without drawing the wrong conclusion

Watch the 3D engine, not just the headline percentage

Task Manager reports activity by GPU and by engine. Microsoft’s DirectX engineering explanation says Windows obtains these figures from the GPU scheduler and memory manager, and that different workloads use different engines. The overall GPU percentage represents the busiest engine rather than a simple average of all engines. A low overall number can therefore coexist with a busy 3D engine, and a high number may reflect a different engine than the one producing the game’s frames.

Observe the game while its scene changes. A pause menu, frame-rate cap, video cutscene, shader compilation, or loading transition can move the workload between engines or leave the GPU briefly idle. Compare several moments instead of treating one instantaneous reading as definitive.

Use the process view and Performance view together

The process view answers “which engine is this process using now?” The Performance view answers “which model is that engine attached to?” Neither view alone is sufficient when both integrated and discrete adapters are present. Reading the model names also prevents the common mistake of assuming that the first GPU listed is the slower one.

Driver and Windows version affect reporting

Microsoft’s engineering documentation notes that GPU performance data in Task Manager requires a Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) 2.0-or-newer driver. That explanation dates from 2017 and should not be treated as a guarantee that every current Windows build presents identical columns or graphs. If GPU graphs or engine fields are missing, record your Windows version, check whether both adapters are detected, and make sure the graphics driver supports the reporting features available on that system.

Why dedicated-memory usage does not prove which GPU is rendering

Do not decide from a “dedicated GPU memory” number alone. Microsoft explains that an integrated GPU can have memory reported as dedicated, while both integrated and discrete GPUs can also use shared system memory. Memory allocation describes how resources are accounted for; it does not, by itself, identify the adapter producing the game’s frames.

Microsoft has also documented a Windows 10 issue in which the Task Manager Details dedicated-memory counter can show incorrect values. That is a specific known issue, not a claim that every Windows release or computer has the problem. For an affected system, Microsoft’s guidance is to use the Performance pane, Windows Performance Recorder, or Windows Performance Analyzer instead of relying on that counter.

If High performance does not change the observed GPU

Confirm that you selected the rendering executable

Many games start through a launcher, updater, anti-cheat component, or a separate main executable. Watch the process list during actual gameplay and note which file shows the GPU engine activity. Add that executable in Settings > System > Display > Graphics, save the preference, and restart the game. Do not assume the first similarly named entry is the renderer.

Check that Windows sees both adapters

Open Task Manager’s Performance page and note every GPU model. Device Manager can provide a second check under Display adapters. If the discrete adapter is absent, disabled, or reporting an error, a per-app preference cannot select it. Resolve detection or driver problems first, following the support guidance for the computer or GPU manufacturer.

Account for vendor and laptop hybrid modes

Some laptops use firmware or an OEM hybrid-graphics mode to decide how displays and applications are routed. The exact controls vary by model and vendor, so there is no single NVIDIA, AMD, or OEM control-panel sequence that applies to every machine. Windows 11’s documented per-app preference is the consistent starting point. Avoid disabling the integrated GPU as a routine fix: the normal hybrid design exists to balance power efficiency and performance, and disabling an adapter can affect battery life, display routing, or other applications.

Allow for a workload that does not need the discrete GPU

Integrated graphics can run some games, especially at modest settings or resolutions. A game using the integrated adapter is not proof of a fault if frame rate and image quality meet your needs. Conversely, installing a discrete GPU does not mean every game requires it. For minimum and recommended graphics requirements, Microsoft directs players to the game’s developer; compare those requirements with your exact GPU model rather than inferring a requirement from the presence of two adapters.

What each result means

Current observation Likely interpretation Next action
Game process shows the discrete GPU’s 3D engine during active play The game is using the dedicated/discrete adapter for the observed rendering workload Continue monitoring only if performance or power behavior is still a concern
Game process shows the integrated GPU’s 3D engine, but play is smooth Windows or the game is using the lower-power adapter successfully Leave it as-is, or choose High performance if you need more graphics headroom
Game process shows integrated graphics and performance is poor The wrong adapter may be selected, or the integrated GPU may simply be below the game’s needs Set the correct executable to High performance, restart, and verify; then check the developer’s requirements
No GPU engine column or graphs View layout, Windows/driver support, or adapter detection may limit reporting Use the available column chooser, check both adapters and driver support, and avoid relying on memory counters
High performance is saved but the same model remains active The wrong executable may have been configured, the app may not have restarted, or an OEM/firmware policy may control routing Identify the live renderer, restart again, and consult the computer’s model-specific graphics guidance

Desktop and laptop checks that commonly differ

Laptops with a built-in display

The integrated GPU may remain involved in display output even when the discrete GPU renders the game’s 3D work. That is why the physical display path alone cannot establish which processor is doing the rendering. Use the process engine and model mapping instead.

Desktops with a discrete card

A desktop normally exposes the discrete card as a separate adapter, but GPU numbering still depends on Windows enumeration. Check the model name rather than assuming GPU 0 or GPU 1 from the card’s slot or monitor cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

External GPU enclosures

An external enclosure adds another possible adapter and display path. Treat it like any other multi-GPU configuration: identify every model in Performance, observe the game’s process engine during play, and verify the per-app preference after restarting.

A repeatable checklist

  • Start the game and load a representative 3D scene.
  • Open Task Manager and locate the actual game process, not only its launcher.
  • Read the process’s GPU engine entry; enable the column if necessary.
  • Open Performance and write down the model name for each GPU number.
  • Match the active engine to integrated or discrete hardware by model name.
  • Observe more than one moment and focus on 3D activity, not only the busiest overall percentage.
  • If the assignment is wrong on Windows 11, set the game’s executable to High performance under Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  • Save, restart the game, and verify the live process again.
  • If results remain unclear, check adapter detection, driver/WDDM support, the correct executable, and the game’s own published requirements.
