Start with Microsoft Edge’s Pop-ups and redirects control set to Blocked (recommended), then keep SmartScreen, secure DNS, and browser updates enabled. If redirects continue, inspect extensions, review notification permissions, clear cached data, and scan the device for malware. These controls address different problems: an automatic pop-up is not the same as an advertisement rendered inside a page, a notification, or a hijacked browser setting.
What malicious search ads and redirects actually are
A browser hijacker is unwanted software or a malicious extension that changes browser settings without meaningful permission. It can replace a search engine or home page, send searches through an unfamiliar site, open advertising pages, or steer you toward phishing and malware. The operator may be trying to collect personal information or generate fraudulent advertising revenue.

Not every unwanted page proves that the browser itself is infected. A site can open a new tab after you click a button, display an advertisement inside its own layout, or send a notification that appears in the operating system’s notification center. Those symptoms require different controls. Correctly identifying the behavior prevents you from weakening useful protections or installing another questionable program to solve the wrong problem.

Microsoft’s browser-hijacking guidance is written for the United States and notes that features can vary by region. The menu paths below are for the current desktop version of Microsoft Edge; Chrome, Firefox, Safari, mobile browsers, and managed work devices use different labels and policies.

Identify the symptom before changing settings
| What you see | Most likely layer to check | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| A new window or tab appears without a click | Edge’s Pop-ups and redirects permission | The blocker targets automatically opened windows, not every advertisement. |
| A banner or video advertisement is embedded in a page | The site’s page content or a reputable ad-blocking extension | Edge’s pop-up control does not remove advertisements created inside a webpage. |
| A new page opens after you select a button or link | Inspect the destination, extension behavior, and the site itself | A pop-up opened after a user action may not be stopped by the pop-up blocker. |
| Alerts appear in the desktop notification center | Site notification permissions | Notifications are separate from pop-up permissions. |
| A full-screen warning plays loud audio or demands a phone call | Scareware protection and safe recovery steps | The page’s claim of infection is not evidence that the device is infected. |
| Your search engine, home page, or new-tab page changed without approval | Extension review and a device malware scan | Unauthorized setting changes are a stronger sign of hijacking than a single advertisement. |
Step 1: Block automatic pop-ups and redirects in Edge
Edge enables its pop-up blocker by default, but verify the setting before troubleshooting further:
- Open Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then choose Settings.
- Select Privacy, search, and services.
- Under Site permissions, open All permissions.
- Choose Pop-ups and redirects.
- Set the control to Blocked (recommended).
Use an exception only when a trusted site genuinely needs a separate window, such as a controlled sign-in or document workflow. Add that site alone rather than allowing pop-ups globally, and remove the exception when the workflow ends.
This setting blocks a website from automatically opening a new window or tab. It does not block an advertisement that is part of the page’s normal HTML, and it does not necessarily block a new window opened after you select a page button or link. Microsoft’s concise distinction is: Website advertisements cannot be blocked by the Edge pop-up blocker.
If the unwanted material is inside the page, continue with extension, cookie, and site-permission checks instead of repeatedly changing this toggle.

Check SmartScreen
In Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Security. Keep Microsoft Defender SmartScreen enabled. Microsoft describes SmartScreen as a defense against known phishing sites and malicious downloads. It is a warning and blocking layer, not a promise that every newly created scam site will be identified.

Use secure DNS as one protective layer
Secure DNS encrypts DNS queries, which can reduce exposure while your browser asks a DNS service to translate a domain name into an address. It can help protect against phishing and malware according to Microsoft’s Edge guidance, but it does not make a malicious site safe after you visit it and cannot replace careful link and download decisions. If your organization supplies a DNS policy, follow that policy rather than overriding it.
Install browser updates
Check Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Allow Edge to check for and install available updates, then restart when requested. Updates repair browser vulnerabilities and refresh security lists. Keep the operating system updated as well, because a secure browser running on an unpatched device still has a broader attack surface.
Step 3: Audit extensions without guessing
Extensions have access to pages, searches, and browsing data, so an unwanted or compromised extension can mimic a browser hijacker. If pop-ups or redirects continue after the built-in blocker is correctly configured:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Edge’s extensions manager and disable every extension temporarily, including extensions you recognize.
- Test the pages that previously redirected you.
- If the symptom stops, enable extensions one at a time and retest after each change.
- Remove the extension that brings the behavior back, then check whether its publisher and permissions are still appropriate.
Install optional extensions only from the browser’s official store and prefer a reputable ad-blocking extension if you need filtering beyond page pop-ups. An extension is an additional software component that must be trusted and maintained; it can also interfere with logins, video players, payment pages, or legitimate new-window workflows. Do not install an extension merely because a pop-up claims it is required to clean the browser.

Edge has a potentially unwanted application (PUA) protection setting in versions 80.0.361.50 and later. Organizations can also enforce extension policies, so a work computer may show controls that you cannot change. A locked or missing setting is a reason to ask the administrator rather than attempting to bypass management.
Step 4: Check the device when settings change or redirects persist
A browser-only adjustment is not enough when the home page or search provider changed without permission, unfamiliar software appeared, downloads started unexpectedly, or redirects continue with all extensions disabled. Microsoft describes hijackers as malware that can alter browser settings and recommends scanning the device when pop-up troubleshooting does not solve the problem.
- Stop entering passwords, payment details, or support codes into the suspicious page.
- Close the tab or window using the browser controls. Do not call a number displayed by a scare page or grant remote access.
- Run the operating system’s reputable malware and potentially unwanted-program scan, allowing it to quarantine detections.
- Restart the device if the scanner requests it, then test Edge before restoring extensions.
- If the scan reports a threat or settings keep changing, preserve the detection name and seek qualified technical or organizational support.
Use trusted download sources for browsers, extensions, codecs, and utilities. “Free” installers from file mirrors, cracked-software pages, and unexpected update prompts are common installation routes for unwanted browser changes. Downloading from a reputable source and keeping both the browser and operating system current reduces this preventable risk.
Recognize and handle scareware pages
Scareware is designed to make you act before you think. Typical signs include a full-screen page, a loud alarm or repeated voice message, a fake infection count, animated warnings that resemble system dialogs, and instructions to call “support,” install a tool, or allow remote control. A web page can imitate a security alert; its appearance alone does not prove that the operating system found malware.

Edge’s scareware blocker looks for suspicious full-screen behavior. Microsoft says it is enabled by default on devices with more than 2 GB of RAM and at least 5 CPU cores. It is not enabled by default at 2 GB of RAM or fewer than 5 cores, and it is unsupported below 1 GB of RAM or with fewer than 2 cores. Because the default depends on the device, verify the setting on your own installation rather than assuming it is active.
When the blocker detects a suspected scam, Microsoft says it can exit full screen, stop aggressive audio, and display a warning. Detection can be wrong; use Edge’s reporting option for a false positive instead of treating every warning as definitive. Whether or not the blocker intervenes, close the page, do not download the offered “fix,” and use your normal security tools to check the device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate website notifications from pop-ups
Persistent alerts in the desktop notification center may be notifications that a site was allowed to send, not pop-up windows. Review Edge’s site notification permissions and remove permission for sites you do not recognize. A site can request notification access through a deceptive prompt, and accepting it can produce alerts even when the pop-up blocker is working correctly.
If the symptom is a redirected tab, changing notification permissions will not solve it. If the symptom is only a desktop alert, changing the pop-up setting may also have no effect. Match the permission to the behavior before changing several settings at once.
Best Value
Clear cached data, but understand what that does
Cached files can preserve a page element or script that keeps misbehaving after the underlying site has changed. Clear Edge’s cached browsing data using its privacy settings, then close and reopen the browser. Clearing the cache can force fresh page resources; it does not remove malware installed on the device, and it does not by itself undo an unauthorized extension or a changed browser setting.
Before clearing data on a work or shared computer, confirm whether you need saved sign-ins, site preferences, or locally stored work. Clearing more categories than necessary can sign you out or remove useful site data. If the same redirect returns immediately after a clean test with extensions disabled, move to the malware-scan step instead of repeatedly clearing the cache.
Do not mistake InPrivate for a security cure
Edge’s InPrivate mode is useful for a temporary session because Microsoft describes it as not storing browsing history, cookies, and other browsing data after the session ends. It does not make a malicious link safe, disinfect a device, block every advertisement, or prevent a malicious extension that is installed in the normal browser. Use it to isolate a session or avoid saving local history, not as a substitute for updates, SmartScreen, permissions, or malware scanning.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What to do if the browser keeps redirecting
Use this sequence so each test answers a specific question. Change one variable at a time where possible.
- Stop interacting with the page. Do not call numbers, install a “cleanup” tool, enter credentials, or grant remote access in response to the redirect.
- Record the trigger. Note whether it happens on startup, after a search, on one site, after a click, or at random. A pattern helps separate a site problem from a browser-wide problem.
- Verify Pop-ups and redirects. Follow the Edge path above and remove broad allow-list entries. Test again with a trusted site.
- Disable all extensions. If the redirect stops, re-enable extensions individually until the interfering component is identified.
- Review notifications. Remove unfamiliar notification permissions if the symptom is an operating-system alert rather than a new browser tab.
- Clear the cache and restart Edge. Retest before restoring optional extensions or adding exceptions.
- Update Edge and confirm SmartScreen. Use the About Microsoft Edge page and the Security settings page.
- Scan the device. Do this immediately when settings changed without consent, unfamiliar downloads appeared, or redirects continue with extensions disabled.
- Escalate with evidence. Keep the suspicious domain, extension name, scanner result, and approximate time. Give those details to your IT administrator or a qualified technician rather than downloading an unsolicited repair utility.
If the redirect appears only after clicking a particular site control, the site may be opening a user-initiated window that the pop-up blocker is allowed to open. If it appears across unrelated sites or survives an extension-free test, treat it as a browser or device issue and continue through the sequence.
Built-in controls, extensions, and malware scans: which layer fits?
| Layer | Best for | What it can do | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edge pop-up and redirect blocker | Automatically launched windows and tabs | Blocks unsolicited pop-ups and allows narrowly scoped site exceptions. | Does not remove in-page advertisements or necessarily stop windows opened after a click. |
| SmartScreen | Known phishing sites and malicious downloads | Warns about or blocks destinations and downloads identified as dangerous. | No detection system is perfect; keep other layers active. |
| Secure DNS | Protecting DNS lookups | Encrypts DNS queries and can help against phishing and malware. | It is not a guarantee that a destination or download is safe. |
| Reputable ad-blocking extension | Ads and trackers rendered inside pages | Adds filtering beyond the browser’s automatic pop-up control. | Must be trusted, updated, and debugged when it breaks legitimate sites. |
| Device malware scan | Hijacked settings, unwanted programs, and persistent redirects | Looks beyond the browser for malware or potentially unwanted software. | Scanning is a diagnostic and removal step, not a replacement for safe downloads and updates. |
Prevent the next hijack
- Keep Edge, the operating system, and security software updated.
- Leave SmartScreen and the pop-up blocker enabled unless a narrowly defined, trusted workflow requires an exception.
- Install extensions only from the official browser store, and periodically remove extensions you no longer use.
- Use reputable download sources; reject unexpected “codec,” “update,” or “virus removal” prompts from web pages.
- Read the destination before selecting a search result or sponsored link, especially when the wording creates urgency.
- Grant site notifications only to sites that have a clear reason to send them, and revoke permission when it is no longer useful.
- Use secure DNS where it is compatible with your network policy, while remembering that it is only one protective layer.
- Keep regular backups of important files so a browser incident does not become a data-loss incident.
Browser and device caveats
The exact Edge labels and hardware defaults described here can change as Microsoft updates the browser. The pop-up, Security, and About pages are the current paths for desktop Edge; do not copy them verbatim into instructions for another browser or for mobile. Managed devices may hide or enforce settings. The scareware blocker’s RAM and CPU thresholds are device-dependent, and unsupported low-memory hardware should not be assumed to receive that feature. When a control is unavailable, rely on the remaining layers—safe downloads, updates, extension review, site permissions, and a device scan—rather than installing an unverified substitute.
