Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe string 0x800070422 is not established as a separate Microsoft error code. It is most likely a transcription error for 0x80070422, which Microsoft associates with a disabled or non-running service, especially Windows Update. Copy the code again from the original Windows screen, identify where it appeared, and then follow the matching repair path below.
What “0x800070422” probably means
Microsoft’s documented code is 0x80070422, not 0x800070422. The title form contains an extra zero, so changing settings before confirming the characters can send you down the wrong troubleshooting path. Error codes are easiest to misread when copied from a screenshot, a phone photograph, or a web page.

For 0x80070422, Microsoft Learn says the issue occurs when the Windows Update service stops working or is not running. Microsoft Support describes the same code as “The service cannot be started because it is disabled.” Those descriptions point first to the Windows service state, not to a virus.
The location of the message still matters. A code in Windows Update or Settings has a different practical path from a message shown by Microsoft Store, an installer, or an unsolicited browser page. Use the section that matches the place where you actually saw it.

First, verify the code and its source
- Reopen the original screen. Check Windows Update, the Settings error page, Update history, Microsoft Store, the installer, or the browser tab that displayed the message.
- Copy every character. Compare what you see with
0x80070422. Record whether the prefix is0x, where the message appeared, and what action triggered it. - Capture the scope. For Store problems, note whether Store itself fails, sign-in fails, one particular app will not install, or every download fails.
- Check whether Windows generated it. A built-in Settings, Update, or Store screen is different from a web page that suddenly opened in a browser.
If the original dialog really contains 0x800070422 and not 0x80070422, do not assume the two strings are interchangeable. Record the exact text and the application that displayed it before looking for a fix.
Fix 0x80070422 in Windows Update or Settings
1. Open the Services console as an administrator
Sign in with an administrator account, press Win+R, type services.msc, and press Enter. If Windows asks for permission, approve the administrator prompt. This opens the list of services that Windows and installed components use.
2. Check the Windows Update service
Find Windows Update in the list. Open its properties and check the startup setting. It must not be set to Disabled. Microsoft’s guidance identifies a disabled service as the direct cause represented by 0x80070422.

3. Restart Windows
Close the Services console and restart the computer from the normal Windows power menu. A restart reloads the service configuration and clears a transient state that can remain after a setting change. Do not interrupt the restart or power off the machine while Windows is applying pending updates.
4. Check for updates again
After signing back in, open the Windows Update page in Settings and select the command to check for updates. The exact label can vary by Windows release, but it is normally on the Windows Update page. If the check completes, install updates through Windows rather than downloading an unverified “fix” from a third-party page.
If 0x80070422 returns, note whether it appears immediately, during download, or during installation. That timing helps distinguish a service-state problem from a later update-component failure.

Run the troubleshooter after confirming the exact code and service state. If it reports a condition it cannot repair, keep the report or take a screenshot of the result; the wording can identify the next support step.
Use Microsoft’s component-reset guidance
When the troubleshooter does not clear the error, follow Microsoft’s documented Windows Update component-reset instructions. Component reset is broader and less reversible than checking one service, so use the current Microsoft instructions for your Windows version and follow each step in order.
Do not paste a command sequence from an anonymous “one-click fixer” into an elevated Command Prompt. If an instruction tells you to disable security software permanently, delete system folders without a backup, or install an unknown executable, stop and use Microsoft’s support documentation instead.
When the service cannot be started
If Start is unavailable, the service immediately stops, or Windows reports another error, record the exact message. A service that is deliberately disabled by a policy or management setting may be changed back after you edit it. In that situation, the person or organization managing the PC may need to approve the change. Do not disable additional services as an experiment.

If the computer is managed by an employer or school, contact the administrator before resetting update components. On a personal PC, continue with the Windows Update troubleshooter and Microsoft’s component-reset guidance, then use Microsoft Support if the service still will not run.
When Microsoft Store shows the code
0x80070422 can be reported in a Store-related workflow, but the Store message alone does not identify the cause. First classify the failure:
- Store itself will not open: record whether the window closes, remains blank, or displays the code.
- Sign-in fails: note whether the error appears before or after you enter account details.
- One app will not install: record the app name and whether other apps install normally.
- Every download fails: note whether browsing Store pages still works and whether the failure affects updates as well as new apps.
Test the smallest useful comparison: try another free app or update if the Store opens. One-app failures can involve that app’s compatibility or account context, while an all-download failure points to a broader Store, account, policy, or Windows configuration issue. This comparison does not prove a cause, but it prevents you from applying a Windows Update service change to an unrelated Store problem.
For a Store-only failure, use Microsoft’s Store support and troubleshooting instructions for the exact symptom. Keep the app name, your Windows edition, and the full message available if you contact support. If Windows Update also fails with 0x80070422, repair the Windows Update service first, restart, and then retest Store; if only Store fails, stay on the Store-specific path.

When the code appears in a browser pop-up
A web page can print any text it wants, including a Windows-looking code. The following signs indicate an untrusted support scam rather than a normal Windows notification:
- a demand to call a telephone number;
- a countdown or threat that files will be lost;
- a request for payment;
- an instruction to install software offered by the page; or
- a demand for remote access to your computer.
Close the tab or browser window. Do not call the number, pay, install the offered program, or grant remote access. If the page will not close normally, close the browser from its window controls or use Windows Task Manager to end the browser, then reopen it without restoring the suspicious tab. A browser page demanding contact or remote access is not reliable evidence that Windows generated 0x80070422.
Choose the right path
| What you observed | Most appropriate first action | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| 0x80070422 in Windows Update or Settings | Check Windows Update in services.msc; ensure it is not Disabled, start it if stopped, restart Windows, and retry. |

| One Microsoft Store app fails | Record the app and test another app; use Store-specific support guidance. | Assuming every Store failure is a Windows Update service failure. |
| Every Store download or update fails | Record Store, sign-in, and download behavior; compare with Windows Update and use Microsoft support paths. | Resetting components before identifying whether Store or Windows Update is affected. |
| Browser page shows a code with a phone number, payment request, or remote-access demand | Close the page and do not interact with the offer. | Calling, paying, installing the offered software, or granting remote access. |
| The original text really is 0x800070422 | Preserve the exact spelling and source, because that string is not established as a separate Microsoft code in the documented material. | Silently rewriting the code and claiming a guaranteed diagnosis. |
Common mistakes that prolong the failure
- Skipping verification: an extra zero changes the code you are troubleshooting.
- Changing settings before identifying the screen: Windows Update, Store, an installer, and a browser can display different errors.
- Resetting components too early: check the single Windows Update service first because that is the documented initial check for 0x80070422.
- Treating a web warning as a Windows alert: Microsoft does not require you to call a number shown by a random page.
- Expecting a success percentage: no authoritative published frequency or success-rate statistic establishes how often this code is fixed by any particular step.
What a successful repair looks like
For a Windows Update occurrence, success means the Windows Update service is no longer disabled, Windows can start it, the computer has been restarted, and a new update check proceeds without 0x80070422. For a Store occurrence, success is specific to the affected scope: the Store opens, sign-in completes, or the previously failing app installs. If only a browser page displayed the string, the safe outcome is that you closed it without calling, paying, installing software, or allowing remote access.
