Check your device’s date-and-time settings for its selected time zone, or find your city or region in the IANA Time Zone Database. Record both the location-based name and the UTC offset for the date you need: the name identifies a set of local time rules, while the offset tells you how far local time is from UTC at a particular moment.
What is my time zone?
Your time zone name identifies the location-based rules used to set local time. A common format is an IANA identifier such as America/New_York. The UTC offset is a separate value, such as UTC−04:00, that describes the difference between local time and UTC at a particular time.

Use a location-based name rather than an abbreviation alone. IANA warns that abbreviations are ambiguous: “CST” can mean six hours behind UT in English-speaking North America or eight hours ahead of UT in China. For background, see IANA’s Time zone and daylight saving time data.

How do I find my time zone name?
Check your device’s settings
Open the device’s Date & Time or Time Zone settings and note the selected zone. The exact menu name and location depend on the device and operating-system version. If the setting shows only a city or a broad label, use that as a starting point for a location lookup.

Look up your location in the IANA database
Search the IANA time-zone information for your actual city or region and use the corresponding location-based identifier. Nearby places can follow different time rules, so choose the location that applies to you rather than assuming a nearby city is equivalent. IANA says inexperienced users are not expected to select identifiers unaided; its theory and pragmatics of the tz code and data explains the database’s naming approach.
What is my UTC offset?
The offset is the signed difference between local time and UTC for a specific date and time. Find the offset applicable to the date you care about; do not assume that today’s value will apply to a future appointment or a past event. Daylight-saving rules can change a location’s offset during the year, and governments can revise time rules or boundaries. Write the value explicitly, including its sign and minutes—for example, UTC−04:00. That is an illustration of the format, not a claim about the offset for every place or date.

Which lookup method should I use?

For a form or instruction, pair the IANA-style identifier with a readable location and the date-specific numeric offset when clarity matters. Avoid entering an abbreviation by itself.

Why check that the time-zone data is current?
Time-zone rules are not permanent: political authorities can change daylight-saving rules or boundaries, and IANA updates its database accordingly. The IANA Time Zones page listed release 2026c, released 2026-07-08, with changes affecting Alberta and Morocco; this is the release information shown on the page retrieved on 2026-10-04, not a guarantee that it remains the latest release.
