How the anime and manga relate
Hideaki Sorachi’s Gin Tama manga began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2004, before the television adaptation premiered in Japan in April 2006, according to VIZ. The manga is complete in Japan: the official Shueisha series page lists collected volumes through Volume 77, and the Gintama official portal records its completion in 2019.

The official franchise portal records 367 television anime episodes through the series finale in 2018. It also describes the 2021 film Gintama THE FINAL as depicting the original’s ending. That episode count is not a chapter-by-chapter adaptation guide: the cited official sources do not establish exactly how every manga chapter maps to the anime or film.

What changes between reading and watching?
The manga preserves jokes built for the page
The manga’s panel form is more than a way to control your pace. A scholarly analysis hosted by Roskilde University notes that characters refer to panel sequences, drawings, sound effects, and how many pages a scene has occupied. Those jokes depend on the reader noticing the page itself, so the manga offers a distinct version of the series’ visual and self-aware humor.
#1 Best Overall
The anime makes performance part of the experience
The anime gives you voiced performances, sound, movement, and an episode-based way to watch. That makes it the more natural starting point if those elements matter more to you than controlling the reading pace. This is a format-based recommendation, not a claim that one version is objectively better or that every scene works better in animation.
Choose the format that suits you
| What you want | Better starting fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Original panel-based storytelling and control over pace | Manga | Page and panel references are part of some jokes, as discussed in the Roskilde University analysis. |
| Voices, sound, movement, and episode-based viewing | Anime | The official portal records 367 television episodes; that total does not specify chapter coverage. |
| English-language print | Check current listings first | VIZ lists Gin Tama, Vol. 1 as the series debut. The cited VIZ page does not confirm that its English print edition covers all 77 Japanese volumes. |
| Streaming | Check your local catalog | Disney+ has a Gintama title listing, but a listing alone does not establish availability or completeness in every country. |
Check access before you commit
If you want to read
For an English-language print starting point, look up VIZ’s Gin Tama, Vol. 1. Confirm the edition, language, current stock, and how many translated volumes are currently offered before assuming you can follow the complete Japanese run in English.
Rank #2
If you want to watch
Check the streaming services available in your country for both the series and any related film. The Disney+ title page is evidence of a listing, not a guarantee that the episodes—or the complete series—are available in your territory.
A practical recommendation
If you already know you like anime’s audiovisual presentation, begin with the show. If you want to take the comedy at your own pace and see jokes that engage directly with manga pages, begin with the manga. If you have no strong preference, make the choice based on which format you can access reliably; the manga is complete in Japan, while the cited sources do not establish the completeness of the English print edition or every regional streaming catalog.
