Find the cause by lining up three records: FFmpeg’s timestamped output, the process and host’s status, and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health timeline. First determine what actually stopped; then test the explanation those records support.
1. Preserve evidence before the next run
Save the incident artifacts before changing the command or restarting services. The exact command and build matter because FFmpeg options depend on the protocol and where an option appears in the command.

- The exact shell command or service/container configuration, with stream keys and other credentials redacted.
- The output of
ffmpeg -version, including build configuration. - The complete timestamped FFmpeg log, especially the lines immediately before and after the interruption.
- Start and stop times, with timezone; process exit status; and any supervisor, shell, service, or container restart event.
- Host uptime and reboot records.
- If FFmpeg was still running, whether its output counters advanced and whether the input source remained available.
Keep the endpoint’s protocol and host visible when redacting credentials; never publish a stream key. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes its reporting and logging options. Check the documentation for the installed version before changing logging flags.
2. Establish what “stopped” means
Use timestamps and process evidence, not just the fact that viewers could no longer watch. Work through the branch that matches the incident:

FFmpeg exited
Inspect the final FFmpeg error or fatal message, then check the shell, service manager, container supervisor, and host records for the exit status, termination, or restart reason. A process exit and a YouTube broadcast ending may coincide, but the timeline is needed to establish what happened first.
FFmpeg remained running, but its counters stopped advancing
Investigate whether reads or writes stalled, whether the input was still available, and whether system records show a resource or process-state problem. The source could be a file, capture device, or another input; without the command and incident evidence, do not assume which one failed.

FFmpeg counters advanced, but YouTube stopped receiving or accepting the stream
Compare FFmpeg’s output and transport messages with YouTube’s health timeline. Check the output protocol and ingest endpoint, then compare the configured stream settings with any health warning.

YouTube showed a health warning while FFmpeg continued
Match the warning’s timestamp and exact condition to the local log and configured codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and incoming media. YouTube’s stream-health guidance describes the kinds of configuration and incoming-video issues its checks can report. A platform warning shows what YouTube received or detected; alone, it does not establish why FFmpeg stopped or stalled.

3. Align the YouTube and FFmpeg timelines
- In YouTube Live Control Room, review the stream-health messages for the affected broadcast, if available, and note their timestamps and wording.
- Convert the FFmpeg log and host-event times to the same timezone. Include any offset between the machines and YouTube display if applicable.
- Mark the last known advancing FFmpeg output counter, the first local error or process event, and the first relevant YouTube health message.
- Use the order of those events to choose a branch: process/input, transport, or YouTube ingest/configuration. Do not treat a health warning as proof of a local crash, or a local process exit as proof that YouTube caused it.
YouTube’s guidance on stream health and recommended settings covers codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, and insufficient incoming video. These messages help describe the stream YouTube received; they do not replace local logs.
4. Verify protocol, endpoint, and recovery behavior
Read the full command and identify the protocol used for the input and output separately. Confirm that the output endpoint is the intended YouTube ingest address and that the protocol matches it. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance warns that using cleartext RTMP where RTMPS is expected can lead to a connection that times out without a sensible response. YouTube’s Live API documentation describes primary and optional backup ingestion addresses.

Only investigate retries after the log points to a connection or protocol failure. FFmpeg documents options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and retry and delay limits in its protocol documentation. Whether an option applies depends on the protocol, direction, FFmpeg build, and its placement in the command.

- Do not add every reconnect flag as a general fix. Select only options supported by the protocol and justified by the failure evidence.
- Do not assume a retry makes a stream continuous or resumes at the exact missing frame. Verify recovery in a controlled test.
5. Compare encoder settings and upload capacity
Compare the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe cadence with YouTube’s current recommended live encoder settings and the specific health messages for the stream. YouTube’s bitrate ranges are recommendations organized by codec, resolution, and frame rate—not measurements of the affected connection or proof that an encoder setting caused the stop.

YouTube advises testing before going live, monitoring stream health, and choosing a bitrate that the upload connection can sustain. A configured bitrate alone does not establish that the network maintained that throughput all night. If the evidence points to unstable capacity, measure the connection during a controlled run rather than inferring a network fault from the overnight stop.
6. Test one evidence-backed change
- Write down the leading explanation supported by the timeline—for example, an input stall, a process exit, an endpoint/protocol mismatch, a transport error, or a specific YouTube health warning.
- Change one relevant setting or condition, leaving unrelated variables unchanged.
- Run a controlled stream long enough to observe the suspected failure mode. Record the same FFmpeg logs, counters, host events, and YouTube health messages.
- Compare before-and-after timelines. If the symptom persists, restore or revise the single change and test the next explanation supported by evidence.
A specific root cause cannot be established without the command and version, complete timestamped logs, process status, source availability, host uptime/restart record, output/network evidence, redacted endpoint protocol, and YouTube health messages around the stop. Until those are examined, describe explanations as hypotheses, not findings.
