To show a still image after the last video in an FFmpeg playlist, render the image as a video of the desired length and place that file last in the playlist’s concat-demuxer list. The image will appear when the earlier clips finish, but only for as long as the fallback video runs. For an indefinite ending, use a supervised source transition instead; a finite fallback file does not keep a stream alive forever.
Prepare a fallback video that matches the playlist
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads files in sequence and adjusts timestamps between them. For reliable concatenation, the files need matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. A still-image fallback should therefore be a prepared video file, not just an image added to the concat list. See the FFmpeg formats documentation.

- Inspect the playlist files. Check their video dimensions, frame rate, codecs, time bases, and audio streams. Decide whether the fallback will include audio. If the existing clips do not share compatible stream layouts, normalize or re-encode the clips and fallback to a common format before concatenating.
- Render the image as a video. Set its duration to the length of the ending you want, and match the playlist’s dimensions and frame rate. If the playlist’s output keeps an audio stream present, include a silent audio stream in the fallback or otherwise make its stream layout match the preceding files.
- Append the fallback last. Create a concat list with the fallback after all the video clips. For example:
ffconcat version 1.0 file 'clip-01.mp4' file 'clip-02.mp4' file 'fallback.mp4' - Send the concat input to YouTube at real-time speed. Use the ingest URL configured for your channel and keep the stream key private. The exact FFmpeg command depends on your media files, local FFmpeg build, and output setup, so check the options supported by the installed build rather than relying on a command copied for different inputs.
- Test the transition before relying on it. Run a short private or unlisted stream and confirm that the image appears after the final clip and that the audio and video remain acceptable.
Choose the right ending: fixed duration or indefinite
| Approach | How long the image stays up | Stream continuity and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Prepared fallback video appended to the concat list | Bounded by the fallback file’s duration. | Simple and predictable for a planned ending. The fallback must have a compatible stream layout, and the stream ends when the input finishes unless something else keeps it going. |
| Supervised transition to a continuing still-image source | Potentially indefinite, while the source and supervising process continue. | Requires orchestration, monitoring, and testing in the actual setup. A restart or source transition may interrupt the viewer’s stream. |
FFmpeg’s image2 demuxer has a loop option for an image input, but that does not make an arbitrary concat-demuxer playlist continue forever after its final file. A duration directive can override a file’s stored duration, but it does not turn a finite fallback into an infinite one. If the image must remain indefinitely, either make the fallback long enough for the intended session or arrange a separate process to detect playlist completion and transition to a continuing image source. Check the behavior in your deployment environment; see the FFmpeg formats documentation.

Check YouTube Live’s encoder guidance
YouTube’s published live encoder settings specify RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bit rate (CBR) encoding. The guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream, monitor stream health, and recheck YouTube’s guidance before going live because platform recommendations can change.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The fallback does not play or FFmpeg reports a concat error: Compare each file’s streams, codecs, and time bases. Normalize or re-encode the clips and fallback to a common format if they do not match.
- The image appears but the ending is too short: Increase the fallback video’s rendered duration. Its duration, not the fact that it originated as a still image, controls how long it plays.
- The stream ends after the fallback: That is expected once the finite concat input is exhausted. Extend the fallback for a bounded session or implement and test a supervised transition for an indefinite image source.
- Audio disappears or the transition behaves unexpectedly: Check whether the fallback has the audio stream expected by the playlist and whether its stream layout is compatible. Test the transition with the actual files and output configuration.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Review the encoder settings, including CBR and keyframe interval, and test with representative motion and audio. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the installed FFmpeg build.
- The stream does not reach the intended channel: Verify the configured YouTube ingest URL and stream key. Treat the key as private.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube stream to keep looping uploaded videos without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home; any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
